The Oneness of God

Is the God that we serve in reality one? The Jews Recite Deuteronomy 6:4 also known as the Shema at each weekly Shabbat – Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD”

Yet Christians have come up with all sorts of arguments to show that the “clear and obvious” meaning of the word “one” is not the actual meaning!!

There is a verse in the New Testament that stands in the way of the illogical argument that one means more than one when talking about Almighty God – Galatians 3:20 - “Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

Here in this verse the apostle Paul compares a scenario of more than one(a group) and states that a mediator cannot mediate for a single or one(numericallyspeaking) person or individual, but in contrast states that God is a single individual or person. He uses the Greek word “Heis”(1520) to describe this oneness – Greek meaning “primary number” literally numerically single!

In contrast when we look at 1 Corinthians 6:16 “What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.” The Greek word one here is “Eis”(1519) it means primary preposition – literally “into or among” There are many who have wrongly used the analogy of the three persons of a trinity to be one as 1 Corinthians 6:16 uses one flesh – or in a family sense. As is clear from this Galatians 3:20 to use this word “Eis” as support for a trinity being one would be unconscionable.
