Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

"And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." Mat 12:32

Many who read this verse read it to mean that the Holy Spirit is a separate and distinct person from Jesus, thus you can blaspheme Jesus and be forgiven, but you can not be forgiven if you blaspheme the Holy Spirit, the third person of the trinity. But just who or what is the Holy Spirit? And if He is a third co-eternal, co-equal person or God, then how can it be blasphemy to speak against one and it not be blasphemy to speak against the other?

We get another view of this blasphemy from Peter...

"But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God." Acts 5:3-4

Notice the last few words of Peter "thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God."

Ellen White makes a similar statement...

"I saw the state of some who stood on present truth, but  disregarded the visions--the way God had chosen to teach in some cases, those who erred from Bible truth. I saw that in striking against the visions they did not strike against the worm--the feeble instrument that God spake through--but  against the Holy Ghost. I saw it was a small thing to speak against the instrument, but it was dangerous to slight the words  of God. "{1BIO 157.4}

We know that all through the Bible God spoke through "instruments" by His Holy Spirit...

"For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Pet.1:21

And so too we see Jesus the Son of God, the Son of man, being filled with the Holy Spirit....

"And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:" Mat 3:16

And being led by the Spirit....

"And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness" Lk 4:1

And Jesus Himself declared....

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised," Lk 4:18

And who does Jesus say dwells in Him and speaks through Him?

"Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." Jn 14:10

"If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him." Jn 10:37-38

In speaking to His Father Jesus said....

"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Jn 17:3

Jesus Christ the Son of God declares His father to be the only true God, that  HIS Spirit was upon Him and that it was the Father that dwelt in Him and spoke through Him. Therefore He would say...

"And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." Mat 12:32

"There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." Eph 4:6

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." 2 Cor 3:17

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ " Eph 1:3
