Spirit of Heaven

You must lay yourselves and your opinions on the altar of God, put away your preconceived ideas,
and let the Spirit of Heaven guide you into all truth.  {1SM 412.3}

In my studies today I came across this term “spirit of heaven” so I did a search on it. As you can see from the above the “Spirit of Heaven” is none other than the Holy Spirit.

The spirit of liberality is the spirit of heaven; the spirit of selfishness is the spirit of Satan. {4T 79.4}

It’s interesting that many believe the “spirit of heaven” is another individual apart from God yet I wonder if they believe the “spirit of Satan” is another individual apart from Satan.

In heaven God is all in all. There holiness reigns supreme; there is nothing to mar the perfect harmony with God. If we are indeed journeying thither, the spirit of heaven will dwell in our hearts here. {5T 745.2}

Here we can see that holiness reigns supreme” in heaven because “God is all in all”. All of heaven is filled with the “spirit of liberality” and even we on earth can be filled with the “spirit of heaven”.

The Lord brings his children over the same ground again and again, increasing the pressure until perfect humility fills the mind, and the character is transformed; then they are victorious over self, and in harmony with Christ and the Spirit of heaven.  {RH, April 10, 1894 par. 2}

When we are in harmony with Christ we are freed from self and therefore in harmony with the spirit of heaven as no selfishness can exist in heaven.  You can see that this idea of “spirit of heaven” is not talking about being in harmony with an individual called “God the Holy Spirit” but rather being in harmony with the ways of heaven.

Parents and children are to sustain so close a relation to God that the heavenly angels can communicate with them. These messengers are shut out from many a home where iniquity and impoliteness to God abound. Let us catch from His Word the spirit of heaven, and bring it into our life here below. {1NL 77.6}

By prayerfully studying the Bible we will catch the “spirit of heaven” and “bring it into our life here below.” We should be thinking of this “spirit” in thoughts of characteristics such as the fruit of the spirit and not catching a being called God the Holy Spirit. To better understand this concept of the “spirit of heaven” we need to look at its counterpart the “spirit of the world”.

"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." 1 Corinthians 2:6-13.

I was shown our danger, as a people, of becoming assimilated to the world rather than to the image of Christ. We are now upon the very borders of the eternal world, but it is the purpose of the adversary of souls to lead us to put far off the close of time. Satan will in every conceivable manner assail those who profess to be the commandment-keeping people of God and to be waiting for the second appearing of our Saviour in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. He will lead as many as possible to put off the evil day and become in spirit like the world, imitating its customs. I felt alarmed as I saw that the spirit of the world was controlling the hearts and minds of many who make a high profession of the truth. Selfishness and self-indulgence are cherished by them, but true godliness and sterling integrity are not cultivated. 94 {CCh 83.1}

Now the question is, are we to believe the “spirit of the world” that is influencing and “controlling the hearts and minds” of humanity is a tangible being with individuality? Of course it’s not though the evil influence was originally generated from Satan. Humanity is corrupted with the spirit of Satan and as a whole is the “spirit of the world”. Those who are “assimilated to the world” are “become in spirit like the world, imitating its customs”. This does not mean that a tangible being lives in these people.

Now if we are truly on a journey to heaven and being assimilated to heaven we must no doubt become in spirit like God imitating the ways of heaven as we are imbued with the “spirit of heaven”. The “spirit of the world” is bondage but the “spirit of heaven” is liberty and we receive that spirit through Christ. “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”(2 Cor 3:17)

If you have followed closely you can see that the “spirit of the world” is the characteristics of the world manifest in a person’s life. The opposite would be true for those who have the “spirit of heaven” which is the Holy Spirit as they would manifest the principles of heaven. Notice below how W.C. White understands this idea concerning the Holy Spirit:

"The statement and the arguments of some of our ministers in their effort to prove that the Holy Spirit was an individual as are God the Father and Christ, the eternal Son, have perplexed me and sometimes they have made me sad. One popular teacher said we may regard Him (the Holy Spirit) as the fellow who is down here running things.

My perplexities were lessened a little when I learned from the dictionary that one of the meanings of personality was characteristics. It is stated in such a way that I concluded that there might be personality without bodily form which is possessed by the Father and the Son.

There are many Scriptures which speak of the Father and the Son and the absence of Scripture making similar reference to the united work of the Father and the Holy Spirit or of Christ and the Holy Spirit, has led me to believe that the Spirit without individuality was the representative of the Father and the Son throughout the universe, and it was through the Holy Spirit that they dwell in our hearts and make us one with the Father and with the Son….(other questions answered). With kind regards, I remain sincerely your brother." Letter from W C White to H W Carr. April 30 1935.

Thus when we think of the Holy Spirit we shouldn’t be thinking individuality but rather the character of God which is manifest in all heaven as all heaven is a stir with this Spirit. Did you ever notice that groups of people after they have dwelt together for some time manifest the same spirit? If they are following a leader with a bitter spirit they will manifest that bitter spirit themselves. Now if we are truly following Christ we should manifest the spirit of heaven as it is the Spirit of Christ that dwells in the hearts of all heavenly beings because they love Jesus. Now if there is a being called “God the Holy Spirit” that is to dwell in our hearts then we must love this being otherwise He could not dwell in our hearts. Can anyone produce a line of inspiration showing me someone who loves this person known as “God the Holy Spirit”?
