Antioch Believer

A knowledge of God is the foundation of all true education and of all true service. It is the only real safeguard against temptation. It is this alone that can make us like God in character. {MH 409}

Can a Muslim be friends with Christians?

We read in the Qur’an 5:51:
“O you who believe! Do not take Jews and Christians as your patrons/guardians (awliya). They are patrons/guardians of their own people. He among you who will turn to them for patronage is one of them. Verily Allah guides not a people unjust.”

And upon this verse I heard and read many comments like:

“Whereas Jesus taught his followers to do good to enemies, the Qur’an forbids even friendship with Christians.”

Is that so? Is this verse really forbids Muslims even friendship with Christians? Certainly NOT! Friends in Arabic is Assdika أصدقاء  not awliya أولياء … And there is a difference between awliya أولياء and assdika أصدقاء. Walī (Arabic: ولي, plural Awliyā' أولياء), is an Arabic word meaning "custodian", "protector", "helper", or authority as denoted by its definition "crown". "Wali" is someone who has "Walayah" (authority or guardianship) over somebody else. For example, in fiqh, a father is wali of his children. In Islam, the phrase ولي الله  walīyu l-Lāh can be used to denote one vested with the "authority of God":

 إِنَّمَا وَلِيُّكُمُ اللّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلاَةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُمْ رَاكِعُونَ

Only Allah is your Vali and His Messenger and those who believe, those who keep up prayers and pay the poor-rate while they bow”. (Qur’an 5:55)

And texts from the Qur’an taken in isolation some time indeed never gave the true understanding. Like the Bible, the Qur’an must be taken in context and cannot be read in isolation. A little further on in Chapter 5, verse 57 clarifies the point about allies and protectors:

“O ye who believe! do not take as allies and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith; but fear ye Allah, if ye have faith (indeed).” Qur’an 5:57

Which I’m sure is something most people would understand, irrespective of their faith. There is really no point hanging around or taking allies and protectors of anyone who just wants to poke fun at you, your beliefs and in so doing, your very integrity. Of what benefit would that be?

Verse 69 of the same chapter, the Qur’an states:
“Verily, those who have attained to faith [in this divine writ], as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Sabians, and the Christians – all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds – no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.”

This is surely one of the most pluralistic verses found in Holy Scripture, effectively implying that anyone who sincerely believes in God and follow the faith of the People of the Book, God will accept them.

Let’s read the verse 5:51 again:
“O you who believe! Do not take Jews and Christians as your patrons/guardians (awliya). They are patrons/guardians of their own people. He among you who will turn to them for patronage is one of them. Verily Allah guides not a people unjust.”

As I noted above this verse is often quoted to show that Islam is intolerant.

Qur’an is a complete book of guidance to the Truth and while studying various issues it should be kept in mind that a particular issue may be discussed over several chapters or several verses in the same chapter. A complete understanding can only be achieved by understanding the whole issue as presented over all the verses and chapters and not by looking at only part of the Qur’an. God specifically warns us against doing just that, upholding part of the Book while disregarding the rest.

“... Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do you reject the rest? but what is the reward for those among you who behave like this but disgrace in this life?...” (Qur’an 2:85)

To understand the issue of befriending or taking the Jews, Christians or people of any other faith as allies, we have to study all the concerned verses from the Qur’an collectively.

Let us look at some other verses about this issue. The following two verses regulate relations with any people, regardless of faith:

As for such [of the unbelievers] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably. (Qur’an 60:8)

God only forbids you to turn in friendship towards such as fight against you because of [your] faith, and drive you forth from your homelands, or aid [others] in driving you forth: and as for those [from among you] who turn towards them in friendship; it is they, they who are truly wrongdoers! (Qur’an 60:9)

From the above verses, we learn that we are only discouraged from befriending those who fight Muslims because of their religion. Now let's go back to the verse immediately after 5:51, to see if it sheds some further light on the issue.

And yet you can not see how those in whose hearts there is disease vie with one another for their good will (the hostile Jews and Christians), saying [to themselves], "We do fear lest a change of fortune bring us disaster." But God may well bring about good fortune [for the believers] or any [other] event of His own devising, whereupon those [waverers] will be smitten with remorse for the thoughts which they had secretly harboured within themselves-  (Qur’an 5:52)

During the time of the Prophet when the Jews and Christians were in open conflict with the Muslims, there were some Muslims who were more concerned about maintaining there alliances with the Jews and Christians at the expense of the Muslim community. The above verse is referring to such situations where Muslims with doubts in their hearts will ally themselves with the enemy.

Chapter 5 Verse 57 of the Qur’an makes it clear again, who are not to be taken as friends;

“O ye who believe! do not take as allies and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith; but fear ye Allah, if ye have faith (indeed).” Qur’an 5:57

And God teaches us throughout the Qur’an that there are righteous Jews and Christians. As such there is no prohibition for Muslims to be friends with Jews, Christians or people of any other faith who are of good character.

Quranic verses referring to the righteous Jews and Christians:

Of the people of Moses there is a section who guide and do justice in the light of truth. (Qur’an 7:159)

And We caused Jesus, the son of Mary, to follow in the footsteps of those (earlier prophets), confirming the truth of whatever there still remained of the Torah; and We sent him the Gospel, wherein there was guidance and light, confirming the truth of whatever there still remained of the Torah, and as a guidance and admonition unto the God-conscious. (Qur’an 5:46)

Verily, those who have attained to faith [in this divine writ], as well as those who follow the Jewish faith, and the Christians, and the Sabians - all who believe in God and the Last Day and do righteous deeds-shall have their reward with their Sustainer; and no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve. (Qur’an 2:62)

Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of God all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. They believe in God and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous. (Qur’an 3:113-114)

And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book, those who believe in God, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to God. They will not sell the Signs of God for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and God is swift in account. (Qur’an 3:199)

The following verse from the Qur’an capsulates this issue:

O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know each other (not that you may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things). (Qu’ran 49:13)

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender. (Qur’an 29:46)

“...and you will certainly find the nearest in friendship to those who believe (to be) those who say: We are Christians; this is because there are priests and monks among them and because they do not behave proudly.” (Qur’an 5:82)

You Don't Need Any Man Teach You

There comes a time when people have to learn to think for themselves. We’ve become lazy – we want to be told what to think; we want someone to lay it out all for us. Life gets comfortable – if we learn to study Gods word by ourselves, we may have to adjust some of our thinking and that may not be a really pleasant prospect.

There is a great example that we should never forget- the people of Christ time wanted a Messiah that was a regal king- a glorious leader who would give them a wonderful kingdom on earth. They wouldn’t accept the Messiah that God sent to them. He didn’t match their expectations or their wants. And so it is with us now. The “learned men”, like the leading religious of old Jerusalem, expect and want us to think as they think and to believe in what they believe.

Something else that we must remember – there were many, many common, simple-minded in Christ’s time who accepted Him as the Messiah based on their OWN decisions; based on what THEY knew to be truth. They didn’t need the “learned men and the religious leaders” to make their decisions for them. What kind of God would we have if He created us with a dependence on others to make our decisions for us?

Understanding the Scripture

Some doubt that we can properly understand the Scripture. Would God give us a Book but never help us to understand or use what it says? What good is a Bible if we cannot understand it? Do we need to study theology for many years to understand God Words?  "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law (Deu 29:29). The secret things belong to God. We have nothing to do with what God kept secret from us. But if God revealed something to us we must be able to understand it. “… the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever” and we must be able to understand what is ours. Many believe that only "expert" theologians who have studied for years at seminaries can read and understand the Bible. For the average, common, ordinary person there is no hope of ever understanding God’s Book. “Perhaps the Pope, or a priest or a professor or a pastor can understand the Scriptures, but certainly I can’t”.  Is this true? Is this what the Bible says? When we read the Bible should we depend upon others explanation or should we ask God to give us understanding?  Remember that in old Jerusalem’s time the “learned men and the religious leaders” did not accepted Jesus Christ and there were many common, simple-minded  who accepted Him as the Messiah based on their OWN decisions; based on what THEY knew to be truth. They didn’t need the “learned men and the religious leaders” to make their decisions for them.

Today there are more than 21’000 churches around the world and these churches are based on teachings from “learned men and religious leaders”. Every church has different understanding and different doctrines from the others and all of them claim that their teachings are the right one. More than 21’000 churches and all of them are based their understanding on some “learned men and religious leaders”!

The Holy Spirit will teach and guide us

It’s not true to say that only a select few are educated enough and privileged enough to understand God’s Word. For centuries, especially during the "Dark Ages" men lived in darkness, depravity and a state of spiritual death because they forced to believe that the Bible could not be understood by the common man. Often this is what their priests and religious leaders told them. As a result, millions of people were discouraged from reading the Bible or even having a Bible of their own, and in many cases the Bible was not even translated into the common language of the people. And today we are back in to the “Dark Ages” with the same lie that we can not understand the Scripture. Who is the source of our understanding? Are we really had to depend on others explanation for our Salvation? Are the others explanation must be our source of understanding? Is the “learned men and the religious leaders” the source of our understanding?

James 1:5 ‘If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Psalms 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

Psalms 119:73 Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

Psalms 119:125 I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

God is the source of our understanding. We need to remove the wrong idea from our minds that other people are the source of understanding. Too often we automatically look to other people - the pastor, Scholar, seminary professor or other educated person or book to give us understanding. Certainly God can use other people in giving us understanding, but He is the source. Understanding of the Bible does not require an education or Bible instruction, or even a Bible teacher. The ability to understand the Bible is something that God gives to all of us if we ask too. God says “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” (Jer 33:3). God will give understanding if we in sincerity ask of it. James 1:5 ‘If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.’ God is longing to help us but we need to ask.

Jesus promised the disciples that the Holy Spirit would help them remember what he had been teaching them. The disciples were eyewitnesses of Jesus’ life and teachings, and the Holy Spirit helped them remember without taking away their individual perspectives.

But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, you shall abide in him. (1 John 2:27)

My entire purpose is to encourage believers that they have everything they need to grow up in their most holy faith, and that they do not need to go to seminary, or be taught by a man with a doctorate. Not that God does not use and gift men and women as teachers, but that our primary dependence for learning should be by the Word of God taught by the Spirit of God, rather than depending on men to learn the things of God. Therefore God has given us the Spirit of God to teach us, and the Word of God as our textbook. We should not enforce our understanding on the others but show the scripture that we wanted to share and ask God to give them wisdom and understanding. God knows best how His Words can work on each of us, so instead of forcing our understanding on others let God take control and lead us to His truth.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10-12)

In this passage, we see that only by the Spirit can we learn the things of God. Moreover, Paul writes in 2 Corinthians that:

not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God; who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. (2 Corinthians 3:5-6)

Therefore, our objective is not to study the Scriptures as an academic exercise, but rather to seek to be taught by the Spirit the things of God. God’s Holy Spirit will teach us and help those people that we are sharing the gospel with. We do not want to store up knowledge, but rather to seek to find the things that will help us to be conformed to His image.

that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe... (Ephesians 1:17-18)

John chapters 14 through 16 give the instructions concerning the Holy Spirit. Two specific verses in chapters 14 through 16 deal with the Holy Spirit as teacher and guide:

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26)

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. (John 16:13)

Therefore, when we desire to learn and preach the gospel, let us not look and put our trust in other men's explanations of the God’s Word, but rather let us first look to God's textbook and spend time conversing with Him and communing with Him as our teacher. He is able to answer all our questions by the Scriptures. He says:

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened. for every one that asketh receiveth; (Matthew 7:7-8)

EGW said:

“The Bible was written for the common people as well as for scholars, and is within the comprehension of all.” {EGW, Review and Herald, January 27, 1885 par. 7}

“The Bible is written in language that the humblest mind may comprehend; for it is written for the people, and the Lord reveals His truth according to their necessities and their comprehension.” {EGW, BEcho, August 19, 1895 par. 5}.

This gives me hope when I read it, for I am but a simple person. If the Bible cannot clearly and plainly reveal God to the reader, then explanations from man will not lead them to understand it any better.

The Situation in Islamic World

And in Islamic world since centuries some people has been infiltrated into the minds of Muslims that “Qur’an is not understandable to a common man”. Although the same Qur’an was revealed through the Messenger for all of mankind i.e. educated, uneducated ,young ,old, good ,bad, Christian, Jew, urban or rural people. Many people say that if a layman reads the Qur'an he will get confused and misguided since the Qur'an is difficult to understand. But God says in the Qur'an "And We have indeed made the Qur'an easy to understand and remember: then is there any that will receive admonition?" (Qur'an 54:17, 22, 32, 40) The same verse occurs in four places in one chapter. God says the Qur'an is easy to understand and many people say that the Qur'an is difficult to understand. Surely one of the two has to be wrong! If God, Who created human mind and its capabilities, repeats the above verses four times in one small chapter, then how could it be possible for any believer to say “Qur’an is difficult to understand”?

Only your aid we seek:

Muslims made to say multiple times in prayer every day in Chapter al-Fateha 1:5 “Thee alone do we worship and only thine aid we seek” This is so that it gets firmly entrenched in our minds that we should seek only God’s help. God promises to us in the Qur’an in Chapter Mumin 40:60 “And your lord says “Call on me; I will answer your prayer.” Suppose your father is very close to you. He tells you, “whatever you want tell me I will get it for you”. Even then if you want a small favour from him and you tell his friend to recommend your case he will feel bad about it. God is so close to us that He tells us in the Qur’an in Chapter Qaf 50:16 “ - - -We (Allah) are CLOSER to him (man) than (his) jugular vein.” Can we imagine this? The jugular vein is the vein that is closest to our heart God is closer to us than that also! He tells us in Chapter Baqara 2:186 “When My servants ask thee concerning me, I am indeed CLOSE (to them) : I listen to the prayer of EVERY SUPPLAINT who calls on me.” God is close to us we don’t need anybody in between to bring us closer to God.

Have you asked God for wisdom or knowledge in prayer? King Solomon was noted as being one of the wisest men that ever lived.  The true wisdom that came from Solomon was his prayer to God asking for an understanding mind. Solomon asked for knowledge and God gave it to him! If you are seeking discernment or understanding in an area of your life, I pray that you would surrender it to God and ask Him to give you the knowledge and wisdom that only He can supply.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

1 John 2:27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit--just as it has taught you, remain in him.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Luk 21:15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.  ~ Charles Spurgeon

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Do not follow blindly any information of which you have no direct knowledge. (Using your faculties of perception and conception) you must verify it for yourself. In the Court of your Lord, you will be held accountable for your hearing, sight, and the faculty of reasoning (Qur’an17/36).

And never think that you have reached the final stage of knowledge and nobody knows more than yourself. Remember! Above everyone endowed with knowledge is another endowed with more knowledge (Qur’an12/76).  Even the Prophet was asked to keep praying, "and say: `My Lord! Increase me in knowledge" (Qur’an, 20:114).

“It was We Who created man, and We know what dark suggestions his soul makes to him: for We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.” (Qur’an 50:16)

In these circumstances, the eventual behavior of the believers should be complete sincerity and modesty before God. Since God has created and already knows all beings, it is insensible to act in an artificial manner before God. One should sincerely uncover all one’s weaknesses, faults, wrongdoing and defects in one’s faith to God, and ask for His help and mercy.

And finally remember that God said: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 1Co 2:5

The Sabbath

REMEMBER the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shall not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Exodus 20:8-11.

If a person who had not previously known of the existence of the Ten Commandment should suddenly come face to face with them, he would at once be struck with their reasonableness and good sense. As he read the commandment, “Thou shall not steal,” he would agree that it is a good commandment. So with the commandments, “Thou shall not kill,” and, “Thou shall not commit adultery.” He would doubtless observe that most nations had similar laws and had found them necessary and good. He would be unable to find any fault with the law of God.

One thing, however, might be puzzling to him. Why should the seventh day be considered holy? He would be able to see a reason for each of the other commandments; he would even be able to see the need for periodic rest; but the definite seventh day would seem arbitrary. From a mere health viewpoint every fifth or sixth day, or eighth, or tenth day, would serve as well. And, anyway, why select the seventh day of the week rather than just one-seventh part of the time? The other commandments conform to man's reason, but the seventh day Sabbath appears to be an arbitrary decree. He would argue that the spirit of the commandment would be fulfilled by the observance of an occasional day, as convenience might dictate. To demand that a particular day be observed is foreign to God's general procedure in regard to human liberty.

The writer once had a conversation with a person in which the arguments here set forth were advanced. The person in question was well educated. The conversation turned upon the law of God, especially the Sabbath commandment. His argument ran somewhat as follows:

“I appreciate the contribution your denomination is making toward law and order. In an age such as this, in which crime and lawlessness prevail, we must depend on the churches to stand stiffly for righteousness. I am sorry to note that some of the churches are not doing this. They are making light of the law of God, and this can but react in civil affairs. If God's law can be ignored with impunity, it is easy to take a like attitude toward civil law. I am glad, therefore, that you are preaching the law as well as the gospel. Both are needed.

“There is one thing, however, in which I believe you are mistaken. You are keeping the seventh day, and you believe that God requires you to do this. Though I honor your belief and think you are honest, I also think you are mistaken. I have given some study to the question, and I believe God's will and intent could be served just as well by your keeping the first day of the week as by your keeping the' last; and it would be a great deal easier for you, and your influence would be enhanced. While I personally believe that it is immaterial whether I keep one day or another, or no day at all, I honor those who do. But I think you are mistaken in believing that, you must keep the seventh day. God does not require it of you. The most He could expect would be for you to keep one day in seven.

“The Sabbath commandment is of a different nature from the other commandments. If a group of men who had never heard of the Ten Commandments were to live together, they would soon evolve a series of laws for their own guidance. Heathen nations and savage tribes have rules against stealing, killing, and adultery. I believe that such primitive peoples would after a while construct a code of laws in conformity with the Ten Commandments, but I do not see how they could ever evolve a seventh-day Sabbath law. There is nothing in nature that could guide them in such an undertaking. I consider the other commandments binding, but not the seventh-day Sabbath.”

To this, answer was given along the following line: 'Without admitting the truth of all your contentions, let us grant that the Sabbath commandment is in some respects different from the other commandments, and that man unaided by revelation could never arrive at a belief in the seventh-day Sabbath.

“That the Sabbath commandment occupies a unique place in the law of God is, I believe, conceded by most students. It is the one commandment that deals with time and has the distinction of declaring certain things sin if done at a stated time. In that it is different from the other commandments.

“It was this commandment which God selected in olden times to be the test commandment. Before the law was publicly proclaimed at Sinai, 'Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt' when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full. For you have brought its forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.' Exodus 16:2, 3. The situation was critical. Something had to be done. 'Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or no.' Verse 4.

“The gathering and the preparation of the bread which the Lord sent from heaven constituted the test for Israel to 'prove them, whether they will walk in My law or no.' Every day they were to gather enough for the day's need, but on the sixth day they were to gather twice as much, so as to have enough to last them over the Sabbath. While the manna ordinarily would not keep fresh more than one day, on the sixth day God miraculously preserved the manna from corruption. So 'on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread.' Verse 22. 'And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which you will bake to day and seethe that you will seethe. And that which remains over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade. And it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein. And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a Sabbath unto the Lord: to day you shall not find it in the field. Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, in it there shall be none.' Exodus 16:23-26.

“Some of the people were not satisfied, however. They went out 'on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the Lord said unto Moses, How long refuse you to keep My commandments and My laws? See, for that the Lord bath given you the Sabbath, therefore He gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide you every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day.' Verses 27-30.

“Of all the commandments God chose the fourth as the test commandment. When He wanted to 'prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or no,' He told them to gather manna each day sufficient for their need, twice as much on the sixth day, and none on the seventh. That was the test. When they disobeyed, it was not merely the Sabbath they broke; it was the whole law. God did not say 'How long refuse you to keep My Sabbath?' but, 'How long refuse you to keep My commandments and My laws?' It was more than the question of a day. When they refused to observe the Sabbath, they broke the whole law. The Sabbath was the test, a sign of obedience. If they kept the Sabbath they were reckoned as obedient. If they broke it they were guilty of the whole law.

“It is to this and to later experiences that Ezekiel has reference when he quotes God as saying in the wilderness: 'I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign between Me, and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them.' Ezekiel 20:12. The statement is here made that God's Sabbaths are a sign of sanctification. In verse 20 the Lord's Sabbaths are called 'a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.' In the first verse quoted the Sabbaths are called a sign of sanctification, in the second a sign 'that I am the Lord thy God.' In both they are called signs.

“It is interesting to note the conditions under which these statements were made. The elders of Israel had come to inquire of the Lord; but the Lord declared emphatically that He would not be inquired of by them. (Verse 3) He had spoken to them many times, and they had not hearkened. Why should He communicate further with them when they refused to do what He commanded them? They were like their fathers. The fathers had been disobedient, and had not showed any inclination to hearken. When Ezekiel thought to plead for them, the Lord commanded him to tell the people plainly wherein they had failed. 'Cause them to know the abominations of their fathers,' the Lord says. Verse 4. This Ezekiel did by recounting to them the difficulty the Lord had in bringing Israel out of Egypt into the Promised Land, and in getting them to keep His commandments, especially the fourth.

While they were still in Egypt, God had commanded them to cast aside all idols. This they had not done. Nevertheless, God brought them out of Egypt into the wilderness and proclaimed to them His law. In that law He points out the Sabbath, saying that it is His sign of sanctification and that He wants them to keep it holy. 'But the house of Israel rebelled: . . . My Sabbaths they greatly polluted: then I said, I will pour out My fury upon them in the wilderness, to consume them.' Verse 13. God, however, decides not to consume them. On the other hand, He feels that He cannot 'bring them into the land which I had given them, . . . because they . . . polluted My Sabbaths.' Verses 15, 16.

“God pleads with them: 'Walk you not in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their judgments, nor defile yourselves with their idols: I am the Lord your God. Walk in My statutes, and keep My judgments, and do them; and hallow My Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between Me and you, that you may know that I am the Lord your God.' Verses 18-20. But 'the children rebelled: ... they polluted My Sabbaths: then I said, I would pour out My fury upon them, to accomplish My anger against them in the wilderness.' Verse 21. God decides that He will 'scatter them among the heathen and disperse them through the countries; because they had not executed My judgments, but had despised My statutes, and had polluted My Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers' idols.' Verses 23, 24.

“Twice the statement is made that the children of Israel 'rebelled: . . . they polluted My Sabbaths.' God at last decided to 'purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against Me,' and 'they shall not enter into the land of Israel.' Verse 38.

No one can reverently read this chapter without coming to the conclusion that God makes much of the Sabbath, that it is a test, a sign, that is selected above the other commandments as a proof of obedience. I will prove them, God says, 'whether they will walk in My law, or no.' The keeping of the Sabbath is a proof of obedience. It is the sign of sanctification. It is the sign that 'I am the Lord thy God.'

“Just why did God select the Sabbath commandment as a test rather than one of the other commandments? Admitting the contention that the seventh-day Sabbath rests upon a 'Thus said the Lord' only, by this very fact special prominence and significance is given to it. One commandment is singled out from the rest, to stand as a test, a sign that if a person obeys that, he is in harmony with the whole law.

“It is as if God should reason thus concerning the other nine commandments:

“ 'I have given them My law. I have written it upon their hearts; it is traced in every fiber of their being. They know by nature what is right and what is not. Their own conscience witnesses to the truthfulness of My law. The law is so plain, it is so evident to all that these basic commandments are necessary to existence that men might fail to accept them as of divine origin. Some will contend that the commandments are so vital to life and existence, so evidently necessary, that, unaided by any divine direction, the people would of themselves be able to make a law comparable to Mine. They will boast that through the passing of the ages men have through experience arrived at the conclusion that it is not good to steal or lie or kill, and have evolved appropriate laws concerning such matters, and that these laws are not of divine origin, but are the result of human experiment and are definitely ingrained in the race. They will point with assurance to tribes and races who for centuries have been out of touch with civilization and yet have rules covering many points in the law. They will claim this as proof that the law is not of divine origin, that men are simply following a law which their own experience teaches them is for the good of mankind.'

“God continues: 'I will make one provision in My law that does not have any correspondence in nature; that will be a positive command, and for which they will be unable to find any reason aside from My Word. For the other commandments man can see a reason. They appeal to his good sense. But for this commandment there will be no other reason than My command. If they obey it, they obey Me. If they reject it, they reject Me. I will make that commandment a test, a sign. I will make it a test of whether they will keep My law, or no. I will make it a sign that I am the Lord.

“ 'I will make the seventh day to be the Sabbath, and ask them to observe it, There is nothing in nature to indicate that this day is the Sabbath. If they keep it, it will be because I command it. I will make it a test, and tell them so. Thus I can prove them whether they will walk in My law or no. The Sabbath will be My sign, My test of obedience. The seventh day, not one day in seven. Whoever keeps it obeys Me. Who ever rejects it rejects not only the Sabbath but the whole law. More than that, when they reject the seventh day, they reject Me. The keeping of the seventh- ' day Sabbath is the sign that they accept Me as their God.

'In course of time there will arise men who will claim to be religious, but who in reality are leaning to their own understanding. Many of them will reject the story and the God of creation, substituting their own theories on how things came into existence. Although they were not present when I spoke things into existence, they will pronounce learnedly of how it was done, rejecting My testimony as to the event. Some of them will definitely reject Me. Others will claim to believe in Me, and yet when it comes to a conflict between My word and their findings, they will reject Me and accept their own theories. Rejecting the story of creation, they will naturally reject the memorial of creation, the Sabbath. They will not accept that which they cannot reason out. Their own mind is their final source of authority. I will give, them a test which will show whether they will really walk in My law or no. If they accept My sign, My test, My Sabbath, they acknowledge in that. acceptance a mind higher than their own. If they reject My Sabbath, they reject Me, My word, My law. I will make the Sabbath the test.

“'Men will understand the challenge. They will not be able to evade the issue. They will clearly see that in the acceptance of the Sabbath they must and do accept My Word by faith, rather than by their own reasoning. The keeping of the Sabbath rests upon faith only. Men cannot reason it out upon the basis of human experience or research. If they accept the Sabbath at all, they accept it because of their faith in Me.

“'The evil one will make every effort to destroy the faith of My people. He will attempt to counterfeit My work. He will advocate a spurious day of rest, and make it more convenient and popular than the day I chose at creation. And he will succeed with a large number of people, who will accept him in preference to Me. He will challenge My day of rest and rally the people under his banner. The people will have a clear-cut issue before them. It will be a question of My Sabbath on the one hand, and the spurious Sabbath of My adversary on the other hand. I have My sign. He has his. It will be for everyone to choose under which banner he will stand.

Knowing the end from the beginning, I have deliberately chosen the Sabbath as the test, to prove whether men will walk in My law, or no. This is why I have placed it in the bosom of the law. It stands absolutely alone and rests entirely upon My word. I have made it the test commandment. It is My sign.'”

It is not, of course, our contention that God passed through such a process of thought as is here suggested. He knows the end from the beginning, and acts accordingly. For good and sufficient reasons He gave the Sabbath as a sign, a test. We believe we can see some reasons for this. It behooves us to place ourselves wholeheartedly on God's side in this important matter.

The Sabbath commandment has a vital bearing on the atonement. It was with reference to the transgression of the law that the blood was ministered in the sanctuary service. It was when one had done “somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord that he needed atonement. Leviticus 4:27. Does the transgression of the Sabbath commandment constitute “somewhat” against one of the commandments? Numbers 15 contains a lesson in point.

The Lord, speaking to Israel, says: “If you have erred, and not observed all these commandments, which the Lord bath spoken unto Moses. . . . it shall be forgiven all the congregation of the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourns among them; seeing all the people were in ignorance.” Numbers 15:22-26.

Any sin which Israel or the stranger might do ignorantly could be forgiven. “You shall have one law for him that sins through ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourns among them.” Verse 29.

But if a man sinned willfully, he was treated differently. “The soul that does ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproaches the Lord; and that soul shall be cut off from among His people. Because he hath despised the word of the Lord, and bath broken His' commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.” Verses 30, 31.

An illustration follows as to what is meant by sinning presumptuously. A man was found gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. The leaders were uncertain what should be done, and so “they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him. - Verse 34. The Lord did not long keep them in suspense. “The Lord said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death. All the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp. And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses.” Verses 35, 36.

God had proclaimed to Israel His commandments. He had told them to remember the Sabbath day. He had announced that it was His test whether they would walk in His law or no. There was no excuse. When the man went out gathering sticks on the Sabbath, he was not in ignorance. He was rebellious. He “despised the word of the Lord.” He broke the commandments. There was but one law for him. He had sinned presumptuously.

It is one thing for men on earth lightly to think to change the day of the Sabbath. It is another thing for them to touch the eternal law of God, which is the foundation of His throne in heaven above. The commandments constitute the reason and ground of the atonement. A copy of this law was kept in the sacred ark in the most holy place in the sanctuary on earth, a place which none but the high priest could ever enter. Its sacredness was such that when on a certain occasion a man touched the ark he was immediately smitten. (1 Chronicles 13:9, 10) What would have happened had he put his hand into the ark and attempted to change God's writing on the tables. Yet men impiously consider such a possibility! They forget God's holiness and the sacredness of the law, not to mention the impossibility of changing what is engraved in stone by God's own finger.

Has the law which is the ground of the atonement and which necessitated the death of the Lord been changed? If the Sabbath commandment has been changed, have others also been changed? If the law has been changed, has the ground for the atonement also been changed, and if so, did Christ die for one thing in the Old Testament and for another in the New? Did God demand the death penalty for willful transgression of the Sabbath commandment the day before Christ died on the cross, and not the day after? Or was there a neutral zone as to the death penalty? There may be differences among Christians as to many things. Can there be any difference of opinion as to the need and ground of atonement? Is Christ still our High Priest? Is the law still beneath the mercy seat in the ark? Take away the law, and there is no longer any need of atonement. Contrariwise: if there is still atonement, there is still law.

Without the law the atonement becomes a farce, Christ's incarnation a pious fable, His death a miscarriage of justice, Gethsemane a tragedy. If the law or any of the commandments-can be transgressed with impunity; if the law has been abrogated or its precepts changed. If the law as given by God Himself has ceased to be the standard in the judgment, then Christ's death becomes unnecessary, the Father Himself ceases to be the embodiment of justice and kindness, and Christ cannot escape the charge of being party to a deception. Let all Christians cry out against such doctrine. If the law is destroyed, the atonement is not needed, nor is Christ. Let the facts ever remain clear in all minds: Christ lived, suffered, died, and rose for us. We had sinned, transgressed the law, and were doomed to death. Christ saved us, not by doing away with law-for then He would not have needed to die-but by dying for 'us, thereby forever establishing the claims of the law. He now ministers His precious blood for us in the sanctuary above. He is our advocate, our surety, our high priest. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. By grace we are saved.

The Sanctuary Service – M. L Andreasen

We arrived at Şile - Istanbul on 9. of July Monday afternoon. It was wonderful to see some old friends again and also it was wonderful to meet new friends. We were around 50 people from Turkey, Norway, USA, Bulgaria, Azerbaijan, Germany and Austria. I always had this feeling that this camp meeting will be a great blessing. First day we had short meeting to introduce ourselves to each other and right after that meeting I got the chance to talk to Brother Stephen Dickie. I had read his book titled “Islam, Gods Forgetting Blessing” and I had watched two sermons by him. I had also talked to him on Skype several times, but to meet him personally was long waited opportunity. I wanted to get to know him and learn more from him. I was really looking forward to these meetings. On the second day of our camp meeting Stephen Dickie was having 4 hours speech divided to two meetings and I was his translator. The weather was hot and we were gathering in a small meeting room which made the heat even worse. Everyone was sweating but Stephen Dickie’s presentation was so amazing that it caught everyone’s attention. I am not going to talk about the presentations now, we filmed all of it and one of our brothers is editing it and soon we hope be able to upload the presentations. I would love to soon be able to recommend the presentation to every one who wants to know about “Islam and Muslims in the Bible”.

We had the Camp Meeting in a pension in Şile, Istanbul. And there were a few other Turkish tourists there, who were having their vacation in the same pension. During our camp meeting we offered free health check-up to everyone and almost all of the others that were staying in the pension, and also the staff working there, came and participated in our free health check-up. We measured height and weight, bmi, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and gave massage. A few of people who were staying there started to get interested in our meetings and some of them joined us. At our last night farewell party almost every one participated.

I was the translator and after translating the presentation, people kept calling me to be their translator when they wanted to ask question to the speakers or when they had conversation with each others. We had wonderful people and all of us were having something to share with the others and I was running from one group to the other to translate and share the joy with people. But one lady catches my attention. She was well educated Muslim lady, she knew the Qur’an very well and she was listening to the speakers carefully and at almost after every presentation she was asking many questions. And so often she asks me questions about other topics that our speakers were not talking about. I remember one day she asked me about Rev 1:8, 1:11 etc; She wanted to know who is “the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending” in the Bible. She was in deep search and this was so obvious from her questions.

The presentations that our Brother Stephen Dickie was sharing with us were really amazing. It was a great blessing to learn the biblical prophecies about Islam and the Muslims. Every single day was a blessing to me. We were all learning from each other and we were all growing in God’s truth. Our last day was on Sabbath day. After breakfast we gathered for the divine service. And there they announced that we will all have a walk to the sea in the afternoon. On our last day one of our sisters had decided to submit herself to God and she wanted to get baptized. We all walked together toward the sea and I had no idea by then who was going to be baptized, but we were all happy to see that one more soul was coming to Jesus Christ.

When we got to the seaside I saw that the lady who had been listening so carefully to the presentation and had kept asking all those questions, was the one who wanted to be baptized. After the baptism I went to congratulate her and I asked her about her story. She told me that she had few Christian’s friends and they were sharing the Bible with her. She was interested in the Bible but they never manage to give her the true massage of the gospel. And she told me that she had met me first time on my visit to Istanbul in November 2011, and there she heard me saying “I become real Muslim when I accepted Jesus Christ in my life and submitted my self to the Almighty God”. And since then she had been praying to ALLAH and asking Him for wisdom and guidance to the truth. She was praying that one day she could stand and say that she had became a real Muslim like I had been saying. The people that were speaking on the camp meeting were used by God to help her to see the truth, and she decided to submit herself to Allah and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour and she got baptized.

Eph 1:3-8 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heaven lies in Christ;  according as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, in which He has made us accepted in the One having been loved. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace, which He caused to abound toward us in all wisdom and understanding.

ORIENTATION FROM SDA-DNU ANG. BJORN BERGLUNDS MESSAGE TO SDA LEADERS 2006

Within the last month several Adventists has received mail of three documents (messages) written by Bjorn Berglund, a member of the Strommen church, with experiences he encountered.

I will shortly render an account how DNU (The Norwegian Union) has handled these documents (messages):

  1. Bjorn Berglund delivered the documents (messages) with an account of the two first experiences (from March and April 2006) to the under signer in a meeting we had at Kurbadet (an Adventist office) in Osloon November 2, 2006.
  2. The documents (messages) were shared with the rest of the members of the union officials, department leaders and district leaders.
  3. We discussed our own individual opinion.
  4. We gathered as a group and performed an evaluation (this case was up for a discussion in 4 meetings from January 9th till February 13th  2007).
  5. Bjorn Berglund behaved the whole time humbly in relation to this message.  He has in no means spread this message because he has looked upon it as a correction to the leaders.  He feels that the handling of the message is a responsibility which lies with the leadership in the Adventist community because he looks upon himself acting as an intermediary of the message.  Bjorn Berglund has seen this written letter before it was sent out.

It is our opinion that these visions/dreams are not from God.

We have decided on this conclusion:

  1. The timing and the contents in these messages seem strange, that it is contrary to what the churches in Norway were trying to accomplish.
    1. The first message came in March 2006
    2. The church was at that time occupied with a joint campaign where the truths of Daniels book became enlightened.  This is essential material for us as Adventists.  We were putting on the largest evangelical venture we have ever had in a long time.
    3. During this situation came these following messages: “Pastors and those with leadership duties have fully forgotten what the service is that God has given his people.  Remember that it is the three angel's messages in Revelation which we received in service to preach to the world” (March).
  1.  Jesus is represented in a way which is not in harmony with the Bible and in Ellen G. White’s writings.
    1. One of the wrong teachings that is pointed out is described in this way:
“Especially it is the wrong teaching about Gods character and his person.  Remember there is just one God and that is the Father….Remember that the leaders try to advance such false understandings concerning God, his Son Jesus. Many have lost the sight of Jesus.  It needs a renewed message  that the saved, must put their eyes on Jesus the godly person, his merit and his unchangeable love for mankind” (April).
  1.  The criticism of the Adventist church pastors does not seem trustworthy.

    1. “Many of the pastors are not converted to God.  They do not wish to change their own ways, because it demands that they will become unpopular among the leaders of the world”. (April)
  1.  The criticism in Gods message to Bjorn Berglund is vague and unclear.
    1. It is not easy to grasp what needs to be reformed from the  content of Gods message which Bjorn has written.
  1. These messages distract the churches and the co-workers in the relationship to perform evangelism.
    1. Here at the Union office we stretch both the human and financial resources as far as we can, to be assured that we have a strong and good evangelistic work in the whole country.
    2. This type of message distracts us who shall try to answer this criticism.
    3. The messages also distract the church members who receive them.
    4. Time which should have been used on evangelism is used on these messages.

SDA-DNU (The Norwegian Union) chooses of course, a thorough evaluation of these messages.  In light of our conclusion we will not contribute to publish them.  Primarily for the following reasons:

  1. We will not contribute to these messages and allow our attention to be moved from evangelism.
  2. We will not put Bjorn Berglund in an embarrassing situation.  He had delivered the documents (messages) with sincerity.  In respect for him, we will not go out and tell others of our conclusion.

SDA-DNU sent a short letter to Bjorn Berglund the 10th of April 2007 that we had discussed the documents (messages).  The letter contained no conclusion from us.  A couple of days after the letter was sent to Bjorn Berglund, the Union Leader Tor Tjeransen verified also by telephone to Bjorn Berglund, that we did not come to a conclusion regarding the messages.

Since these documents (messages) were now sent to many Adventists (as far as we can understand other persons have sent these documents (messages)), we must say something about how we have considered the documents (messages) and which conclusion we have decided upon.  Co-workers in the SDA-DNU (The Norwegian Union) take the theme in the letters (messages) seriously, even if we do not look upon this message from God.

Sincerely,

Tor Tjeransen

Union Leader

A Meeting at the Supermarket in Stremmen. January 2007
Translated from the original Norwegian by Inger Marie Wiik

When I walked out of the supermarket towards the parking lot, I saw a man standing by my car. At a closer look I saw that he was the same man as I saw in my dreams the year before.

When I reached the door on the driver's side, he looked at me and said: "It is good that you gave the message to the leader of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norway. There is, unfortunately, reluctance to take the message seriously. By being ignorant and silent about it, they believe that it is not there This message has to be given to the Church in Stremmen also. But first you have to contact the leaders in the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norway. The leaders have no desire to take this message seriously, for by doing this, they have to change their course and relationship with God”

I became a bit sad, because I felt this would be difficult. I had belonged to this church since I was a young man. And before that, as a boy, I attended this church together with my parents. I didn't feel any different from all the others who were there. I had listened to my Uncle Ove Martinsen who had made an attempt to explain the message about righteousness by faith, but they considered him a peculiar person.

As those thoughts flashed through my mind, I imagined this message to be a very unpopular one to carry out. Now the man said: "It is true that this message about righteousness by faith has been carried out by many and on many occasions, but the people are not willing to listen because it requires confession and putting away their sins."

"But this is supposed to be the purpose of being converted and a child of God," I replied, and went on: "Since our last conversation I have been studying this subject from the Bible and everywhere possible in the writings of Ellen G. White. And she tells that righteousness by faith and the third angel's message are closely related "

Now he looked at me with a sharp look and said: "Yes, that is true The time has come to carry out this message of mercy to the world The cup of sin is full God has many people around the world who are longing for the message of mercy and grace"

I interrupted him and asked: "Why do I have to do this? I will not be taken seriously. There are many others who are more fit to do this. I have little experience to carry out a message like this. This is going to be difficult People will think that I consider myself superior to them"

"Listen!" the man said. "This shall not be your problem. God will give you the power that is necessary. Keep in mind that God's Spirit is searching for people who are willing to be the necessary messengers in this time of history. In a short while many pastors will openly signal that this message which was given to the faithful servants of God back in the end of 1800, is out of date and no longer actual Remember that about half the pastors and leaders no longer believe that Jesus Christ made himself a human, and came to the earth in human, sinful flesh to save human beings. Many of them are moving closer towards the teaching of Babylon concerning this subject.

"This cannot be true!" I exclaimed. "This is the foundation of our belief!"

"That's right", the man said. "This is one of the last attempts of Satan to make disunity in God's last church. Therefore it is of great importance that the leaders must be warned against the things that are happening. You have to give this message about righteousness by faith and the message of warning to the leaders in the church of Strommen. Sin is flourishing among the church members. This sin must be put away before the Spirit of God will be poured out Not until sin is given up will there be any power in the church. And God will not lead searching people to the church. Remember there are a great multitude of people who are longing for God's leading in their lives. And they are searching for the last message of salvation. God's Spirit takes care of these people where they are, until the Church is prepared to receive them and keep them without confusion. The great controversy against the last Church and the great leader of Babylon is at hand"

I interrupted him again and asked: "Why is it that the searching people cannot come to the Seventh-day Adventists?"

"God doesn't want them to be disappointed over the false theories in the Church. They will ask why they have to change to another church when they don't see much difference," he answered and continued: "Therefore it is of greatest importance that the false teachings be corrected And it is urgent, so that God can start the outpouring of His Spirit upon all people. The end of the world is at hand. The false teachings of Babylon are more and more captivating of the members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in three respects. These are: that there is but one God, righteousness is by faith, and Jesus came in sinful human flesh. Very few are correcting those errors. It is therefore very important to get it done. Go therefore and tell that a great falling away is soon to come."

He shook my hand and said he had to leave, and that maybe we would meet again later. With that he walked toward the entrance of the supermarket. I remained standing and tried to collect myself. I felt weak and was trembling. Then I hurried toward the entrance, but he was not there. I saw nobody on the long bridge over the road.

A New Experience in April 2006
Translated from the original Norwegian by Inger Marie Wiik

As in March, I was awakened by the same man. He directed me into the living room and told me to sit down. He seemed to be more authoritative. He opened the conversation by saying: "Why did you fail your duty? You have not done what I told you to do. You have failed. The time goes on and the world will not be warned against the judgement which is soon to be finished. Remember this is very important as we live in the end of this world's history. Soon serious events will take place. You see that the world is being filled up with more and more sin. Sin is being considered normal and is no longer dangerous, but is rather amusing. God can not tolerate this any longer. Homosexuality, immorality and murder increase rapidly and become normal. Soon we reach the conditions before the flood and in the cities around Sodom and Gomorrah. And you (all) say nothing! You (all) are silent when you ought to warn! You (all) are more interested in being tolerant in a wrong way, and therefore you (all) are responsible for these sins coming into the church.

I felt inferior and responsible for the things he talked about. Therefore I tried to excuse myself and said there was not much I could do about it.

The man looked at me with sad eyes and said: "All who have seen the glory of God and have repented and whose sins are pardoned, will have a burden to warn people against the judgement and eternal death. Remember that the new members in our churches do not realize the danger in this last time you are living in. This is the reason why the leaders must be warned, so that they, if they will, can come back on the right track. As you know, it is more comfortable to be popular than to warn. Many of the pastors are not converted to God. They have no desire to change their course, because that will make them unpopular among the world leaders. In the 14. chapter of Revelation, God has given us the message to be proclaimed to the world. This message deals with righteousness by faith. And that is what it is all about.

"God has more people in other churches than in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Righteousness by faith has become an unknown concept. But when this message of warning will be preached, all those who God has preserved will come into the Church to which He gave the duty to warn. Today there are just a few who really understand what it is all about. Therefore it is of great importance that some are willing to warn against the things which are to come.

"In the Church there are many names registered, but only few of them are converted. Neither are the leaders converted. They are more concerned about their positions than about their duty and responsibility. God will hold them responsible for the back-sliding in the Church. Many false theories and lies are being preached. This is what Jesus was experiencing among the leadership and congregations at His time on earth.

"It is very important to realize that everyone who knows about this and fails to warn will be held responsible. This is the situation today. Indifference and permission of sin flourish. Leaders want to be popular rather than to do their duty."

Now I got very sad and couldn't believe that this was possible! However, I was aware of the fact that the people have been deprived of hearing important messages and truths in God's Word.

Since the last time the man had visited me, I had been studying carefully what our faithful pioneers and Ellen G. White had been shown. I also realized that the Seventh-day Adventist Church had neglected to teach the members, especially the youth, about the foundation of our faith in our Church. And nothing has been done to prevent all the satanic thoughts and interpretations that have been flourishing. A change has also taken place regarding the understanding the pioneers had about God.

The man turned to me with a look both earnest and loving and said: "I am a messenger from God, with the purpose of searching people who are willing to warn those in responsible positions. The entire Seventh-day Adventist Church has become a system that deprives the members the responsibility they have received to tell about God's grace and power to become like Jesus, to think like Him and live like Him. And when some are realizing their duty and taking it seriously, the leaders try to stop them and stamp them out as fanatics rather than helping them. And they will not acknowledge the message.

I then asked the man which message that was not accepted and what persons, but the man answered:

"You know who they are and you know which message that is not being tolerated. I will tell you which message has been sabotaged by the leadership. It is the warning in the 14* chapter of the Book of Revelation. And there are others who are warning against the sins and false doctrines of Babylon, particularly the doctrine about God and His character and personality. Remember there is only one God, who is the Father. There are many different views concerning this subject. The people God gave the duty to warn the world against the judgement, soon to take place, also received a complete message about God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. If you read in the writings recorded according to God's command, you will understand that false doctrines of Babylon have infiltrated the last Church. God's Spirit is now at work in many faithful ones who find their way back to the original message, which started a movement to warn people against back-sliding. A great shaking is now taking place.

Be aware of the fact that the leaders try to present such false understandings concerning God and His Son Jesus. Many have lost sight of Jesus. A renewal is necessary. The saved ones have to realize the deity of Christ, His merits and constant love for human beings. The message shall invite people to receive the love of Christ that He showed by obedience to all the commandments of God. The very message that God commanded to be preached with a loud voice to the entire world, was to be followed by a rich outpouring of the Spirit of God.

This sounded very serious to me and I got frightened and felt faint. I then asked why the churches were so powerless.

"/ am going to tell you why," the man said. "Sin is allowed and no reproof has been given. The church members do not realize the danger of living in sin. The ones who say they are saved, have to change their way of living. They must be willing to make efforts to resist sin. Keep in mind that they have the same possibility as Jesus to overcome. But that has not been clearly understood and preached by the pastors in our churches. God cannot save people who cherish and defend sin. All have the possibility to gain victory if they keep close to God, and receive the power and grace that is at their disposal, and make efforts against sin.

"Remember that many people are honest and sincere. They want to do the will of God, but nobody tells them on which conditions they can be saved. In a little while the last message of warning will be preached with great force. But the sad thing is that only few of the pastors will realize what is happening when this last shouting will be carried out by obedient men and women. They will in great eagerness warn against those faithful ones who carry out the message.

"You need to know that Satan is aware that the time has come to enlighten the world of the salvation of God and His love for the human race. Therefore he has prepared a counterfeit for everyone, also the Seventh-day Adventist, to trust in feelings and mistake that for the Spirit of God. But this false faith and those happy feelings are those of the devil. It is no conversion and salvation. Bear in mind that if the devil succeeds to deceive the people to trust these feelings without there being a total change of heart, they will be lost! This path is a dangerous one."

I felt totally powerless. I was about to start crying, because this reminded me of many of the things that my father and mother had talked to me about. But back then I thought it would be impossible. Suddenly I remembered some statements in the books of Ellen G. White. Also some of the other pioneers have clarified this. I said: "I am not able to bring this message to the leaders. They will think that I have gone insane and that I consider myself much wiser than them."

"Just go” the man said. This is a message from God and not from you. How they receive it seals their destiny. They have to choose what to do with the message. But God will warn them and leave them without any excuse when things begin to happen. That's why you have to go. Keep in mind that the message will not bear fruit and only a few will come to the churches in spite of the plans of the pastors and leaders, until they surrender themselves to God and call out a warning concerning what is about to take place. They also must have their sins pardoned and humbly be open to receive the Spirit of God. Righteousness by faith is the message for our time. There will be a great revival in the whole world. If you are not prepared, it will cost you eternal life."

I was about to ask some questions, but he was gone and I woke up in my bed. I found it strange that I remembered every word and was trembling.

I felt that this was an improper pressure. Particularly when I knew I had no education like the pastors had. I was afraid to make a fool of myself. I struggled with decline and anxiety of losing my head and my reputation. What would they think of me?

The answer of SDA-DNU (The Norwegian Union) to Bjorn Berglund

(This message was given to Brother Bjorn Berglund in Norway in 2006 and I am sharing it here with his permission.)

An Experience I Had in March 2006

Translated from the original Norwegian by Inger Marie Wiik

I felt that I was awakened by a person standing at the foot of my bed. He bid me come out of the bed and follow him into the living room. My wife was not awakened. We went to the living room and he told me to sit down as he himself sat down.

He then started to talk to me. I was quite uneasy, because the man was properly dressed and talked in a nicely manner, but with a tone of authority. There was something special about him. I asked him why he wanted to talk to me.

Then he said: "I want to give you a task. But first you have to carefully listen to what I am going to tell you, and afterwards you will know what I want you to do."

The man continued: "This is very important! God wants you to carry out a duty. Remember that this is of great importance for His Church now in this last time of the earth's history.

I felt that this man was more than an ordinary human being. I became troubled and quite powerless.

The man went on talking: "Be not afraid or troubled! God will be with you while performing the task He will give you! But first you have to listen and carefully understand what I am going to tell you.

I felt awfully fatigued and anxious and was tempted to end the conversation, as I felt this was going to be difficult. I had no desire to be exposed to ridicule because of an unpleasant task.

But then the man continued and now he was very solemn: The reason why there is such lack of growth and progress In the churches of Norway, is that the pastors and leaders have forgotten about the duty God gave his people; the duty of proclamation of the Three Angels' Messages from the Book of Revelation! That is the message of warning that is to be announced to the world before the end of the world!

"God is preparing the close of His work. Therefore He wants His people to perform the task they have been given to do. I am sorry to say that the leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Western World have failed their duty. Particularly the leaders and pastors have sabotaged their task, by spending time to change the Seventh-day Adventist Church to be like the other churches in order to not be considered a sect.

"God has therefore chosen people who are serious and who try to do what the church leaders ought to have done. For this reason God has given tasks to humble persons, who are willing to go out to the people and preach this last message of warning.

The leaders of Norway, however, have felt their positions threatened and are a stumbling-block instead of a support for those who work for God. God has therefore provided for money to be used for this work.

"I am glad to say that there are still some church members who are serious about the perilous time we are living in. Those members support God's last proclamation for conversion. Many support the work by giving money, that this last message of warning can reach the sin stricken world. And a minority has considered it a duty to perform what God has told them to do. But, unfortunately, this is not accepted among the leaders. They are quite similar to the leaders when Jesus lived on the earth. They attack those people who are willing to spend time and money to warn the world.

The leaders are not able to realize this, because they feel they loose the control. They wish to decide what is to be allowed. But God is going to finish this last message of warning to the world in such ways that will astonish the leaders and many of the members."

»This appeared to be very serious to me and I asked the man: "Why wouldn't it be better if this message of warning would be explained directly to the leaders and pastors? Can you not talk to them as you now talk to me?"

The man turned so grave that I became anxious. He went on: The reason why God has to  do it in this way is that the leaders and pastors, who plead to be leaders, are not available for God's Spirit, They are more occupied in obtaining worldly wisdom and knowledge, which hinder the Spirit of God to use them for the current duty. They have forgotten that it is the Spirit which is to use them, not the opposite. Unfortunately many pastors and leaders hold a misconception of what the Holy Spirit is. Many believe that the gifts of the Spirit are inherited qualities. The gifts of the Spirit are given by God when He sees that there is a need. Humans cannot control this. It is the Spirit that uses people. But God doesn't give His Spirit to human beings who are not obeying Him. Unfortunately, some of those who are supposed to be teachers and preachers of God's last message are experimenting with spirits of devils which pretend to be God's power. This will increase. These spirits give strong feelings to the people, but no knowledge about the truth.

I became more and more discouraged when I realized the solemnity of the message from this man. A strong feeling of despair hit me.

The man continued to talk:
They have forgotten their duty, which is to bring the last message of warning to the people. God has for a long time tried to influence the leaders to release themselves from false theology that has stolen its way to the pastors and leaders. They should have been out making clear what is about to happen and warn against it But they have so many false theories and thoughts which prevent the Holy Spirit to fit them to bring forth a last, clear message of grace to the world.

"Speeches and sermons being held have more a character of show and man's opinions than of information and proclamation of the last message of grace."

My desperation and faintness increased. The man at the other side of the table seemed grave and sad. He radiated great solemnity. I felt an incredible desperation about his message. I thought in my mind that this could not be possible.

With this thought in mind the man looked with intensity at me and said: There is good reason to take this seriously and realize that this is the situation in the church to which you belong, and in all Norway. This is also the truth for the rest of the Western World. And he went on: "/ have more to tell you that God wants you to tell the leaders."

I protested and said that I was not a person who ought to go to the leaders with such a message. Others are more able to do it, and more competent to give this message. I said also that I would not be taken seriously. A lot of arguments flashed through my mind to convince me not to carry out this message.

While in my mind I was trying to find an argument as an excuse for not receiving this duty, he looked at me again and said: "You have to do this. The warning to the leaders has to be given. God has chosen you to do this. You have nothing to loose. I know that you realize the solemnity in the message. And you have many times talked with people about the message that is going to save many people from destruction."

I felt incredible uneasy and weak. The leaders would supposedly laugh of me and tell me I have a vivid imagination. A warning from me would have no weight, because I knew so many of the pastors. I had no desire to be made fun of. Think if the whole thing was nonsense!

Again the man gave me a solemn look and said: "You ought not to have such thoughts. This message has to be given. The people are living around us in a chaos of theories which leads them away from God. Therefore you (all) must preach the message God has given His last Church to preach. You (all) have failed to give the message which the pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventists received many years ago. Even at that time God knew that a backsliding was about to come. It has already come.

"God will not lead people to the Church until a change has taken place. God has many honest believers out in other churches. He will let them stay there until it is time to lead them to God's last Church. But if He leads them now to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, they will be harmed by the false theology that little by little has found its way into the Church."

Once again I became sad. I realized that some false doctrines had come into our theology. 1 asked the man if he could tell me what was wrong and what was right.

Again he looked at me with his serious, blue eyes. Then he continued: *7 want you to get the knowledge yourself. Everything Is to be found in the literature that God gave His servants In earlier times. God has already given the message that is to be proclaimed. He would not have given those faithful servants an incomplete message."

I was still unwilling to accept this duty. I felt it was beyond my ability and competence. While I was thinking in this way, the man started to talk to me again: "Go, and the Spirit of God will do the rest! Fear not! The receivers of the message are the ones who have to do something about this message. Remember this is a message from God to the leaders of the Seventh-day Adventists in Norway and to the leaders in our churches. Go and perform the task!

The man rose from his chair and told me to go back to bed. Suddenly I woke up in my bed and was totally confused. Thoughts came to me about what I had experienced. Was this only nonsense or was it real. I felt strongly that he had to be a messenger from God.

I rose from the bed, sat down in the living room and thought about the things which were told me. Everything seemed clear as daylight. Before I would go further, however, I wanted to check out if it were true what I was told, I was compelled to read in the books of Ellen G. White and other pioneers. Unfortunately it turned out to be true all that the man had told me. I still had anxiety and reluctance in my mind to go to the leaders.

I mused for a long time upon this experience. I talked it over with my wife. She said I had to be obedient and do what I had been told. But I still declined. I didn't want to be ridiculed, even though I knew that this was the truth. So I postponed it.

The answer of SDA-DNU (The Norwegian Union) to Bjorn Berglund

(The following was my answer to some trinitarian friends that we were discussing trinity on some discussions group with him. I don’t really remember when it was, I just found this in my old files. Asif)

The Father is not someone else to the Son. The Son is from the Father.  I don't really know how Jesus is the Son but if God said Jesus is His Son I believe the best way for us to understand the relationship between them is to accept that they are Father and Son. And when we say Father and Son I know that we never meant as the human beings become father and son.

God the Father loved us so much. EGW wrote about His love. It’s impossible to explain and more impossible to fully understand this love. And all this love manifested when the Father sent His Son.

1Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

If Jesus has nothing to do with the Father and if they are just love each other as two almighty self-existent God then I don't really see any love from the Father!

Please try to understand my point. if the trinity is true and Jesus is almighty God by his own, and if He is self-existent just as the Father is, then Jesus being almighty God become a man and lived among us then suffered and died on the cross and spend 3 days dead while His Deity was a live in himself while He was dead in the grave; that means:

1. God the Father has nothing to do with all this, for Jesus as almighty God did all this by himself. Then I don't really understand how God the Father loved us so much and He showed us this love by doing nothing! Where is the Fathers love in this? All I can see is Jesus acting and suffering and even died as a man.

2. I don't even see the love of Jesus in this. If Jesus almighty God means He can not give up on anything that makes him almighty God. Like immortality. Almighty God is immortal and can not die in any way. And that’s why the trinitarians says while Jesus was in the grave dead His Deity was in heaven (some say it was in Him). If His Deity in heaven or in Him a live then who died? a body created by him!

3. If Jesus almighty God, Jehovah. Then we have problem in the Bible. For there are many verses says no one ever has seen the God Jehovah. No one seen Jehovah but He lived 33 years with us?

The trinity destroys all the Love from God the Father toward us. The trinity took away the huge sacrifice that Jesus, the Son of God did for us when He emptied himself and lived among as a man and died. He can empty Himself for He received everything from His Father. He was immortal, for God the Father gave him life to have in himself. He can die for He gave back to the Father what the Father gave Him and lived among us in a total depends on the Father.

I am not saying His immortality was conditional as the angels or Adam and Eve was before their fall. The Father gave the Son life to have in him self.

Joh 5:26  For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

This life was unconditional but Jesus with all love gave it back to the Father and died for us.

If Jesus self-existent He most have life in him. Then again we have problem with the Bible when John 5:26 says the Father gave the Son to have life in himself. Its just I don’t know what to call it! Jesus is almighty God has life in himself then another God gave him life to have in himself!

No sir, The Bible clear and easy to understand. With all respect to you and to everyone who believe in the trinity:

What you believe is NOT Biblical and when you try to explain this unbiblical doctrine by forcing and giving another meaning to the verses, we think that the Bible is corrupted! When we don't really know the Bible and see all the Christians believe in all this false doctrines we think that the Bible really teach it and then we reject the Bible and Jesus. Think about the Catholic Church. Slowly they adopted all this pagan teachings. One by one all this false doctrines entered the Catholic Church. Millions of Catholic Christians today prays to Mary and to the saints as a mediator! If Jesus is Jehovah then who is the mediator? When the trinity took away our mediator Jesus, the saints become our mediator and that’s what happening in the Catholic world.

That’s why it is important for me to take away the false doctrine called trinity out of my mind. Millions out there ready to except Jesus as He is in the Bible. And Jesus said:

Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Mar 16:16  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Let’s preach the gospel to every creature.

God bless you.

(By Terry Hill)

“Since the sin of our first parents there has been no direct communication between God and man.” (Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, page 366, ‘The Law and the Covenants’)

This is very clear and also very easy to understand but who then, if not God Himself, has been communicating with fallen humanity?

We have been told

“The Father has given the world into the hands of Christ, that through His mediatorial work He may redeem man and vindicate the authority and holiness of the law of God. All the communion between heaven and the fallen race has been through Christ.” (Ibid)

Notice here that Ellen White makes it clear that since the time that Adam and Eve sinned, there has been “no direct communication between God and man” but that “All the communion … has been through Christ”.

We can see here that in the sense of divine personalities (individual personages), Ellen White differentiates between God and Christ – even in Christ’s pre-existence. In other words, she does not refer to Christ as God – at least not as a personality (personage) separate from the Father.

If Christ is said to be God in personality (personage), Ellen White’s statement would not make any sense. It would be making her say that there has been “no direct communication between God and man” but because Christ is God there has been direct communication between God and man. This statement would be nonsensical. There would be the same confusion as if John had said “the Word was with ‘ton qeon’ (the God), and the Word was ‘ton qeon’ (the God)”. This would be making two separate individuals the same individual. How could that possibly be?

Here we must ask a question. Why was it that after the fall, ‘God’ would not directly communicate with man but Christ would and did? This is well worth pondering. To those who say that there is no difference between the Father and the Son this is a very difficult question to answer.

In personality (individual personage), Christ was the Son of God – albeit He was God essentially (God Himself in the person of the Son).

Ellen White then explains

“It was the Son of God that gave to our first parents the promise of redemption. It was He who revealed Himself to the patriarchs. Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Moses understood the gospel. They looked for salvation through man's Substitute and Surety. These holy men of old held communion with the Saviour who was to come to our world in human flesh; and some of them talked with Christ and heavenly angels face to face.” (Ibid)

Here we are told that it was not God (‘the God’ – ‘the Father’) who has communed with fallen humanity but the Son of God (albeit God Himself in the person of the Son).

As regards to divine personages, Ellen White usually spoke of Christ as the Son of God - or the Son of the infinite God - or the Son of the Father - or some such similar expression albeit she made it very clear that He was God essentially (God Himself in the person of the Son).

Joh 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

“Satan has long been preparing for his final effort to deceive the world. The foundation of his work was laid by the assurance given to Eve in Eden: "Ye shall not surely die." "In the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Genesis 3:4,5. Little by little he has prepared the way for his masterpiece of deception in the development of spiritualism. He has not yet reached the full accomplishment of his designs; but it will be reached in the last remnant of time. … Except those who are kept by the power of God, through faith in His word, the whole world will be swept into the ranks of this delusion.”GC 561

We do not understand that the expression "the only begotten Son of God" refers to our Lord as a human being. It would seem as if John 3: 16 would exclude this: "God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son." The giving was not when He was born of a woman; the giving was that He might be born of woman. The giving was not when He became Michael; the giving was that He might become Michael, that He might step down, down, down, taking upon Him, first the nature of angels, next the nature of humanity, and so going clear down to the lowest step that could be taken, death, that when He ascended, He might fill all things.
