The Holy Spirit

This is the final presentation in a series of three. Before reading this paper it is advisable to read the following two presentations also located on this website: (1) The Alpha and the Omega of Deadly Heresies in Seventh Day Adventism and (2) The Personality of God and of Christ

This presentation will identify the Holy Spirit and its relationship to the Father and His only-begotten Son. Note that it is the identity and not the nature of the Holy Spirit that will be presented here. Are there any Seventh Day Adventisits who are in doubt as to whether we can know the identity of the Holy Spirit? If they are trinitarians, particularly tritheist in their belief, let them consider that that they have already identified the Holy Spirit as a third Divine Being.

And please make sure that you read this entire presentation as you will see Biblical testimony from the Holy Spirit itself that it is not a third independent co-equal and co-eternal Divine Being as tritheists maintain. I’ll repeat that again. Make sure that you read this entire presentation as you will see Biblical testimony from the Holy Spirit itself that it is not a third independent co-equal and co-eternal Divine Being.

We begin by travelling back to the time of the emergence of the Seventh Day Adventist church. At that time, fanatical teachings were obscuring the personality of God and of Christ. To correct the influence of these false teachings, God gave a vision to Ellen Harmon in February of 1845. This vision re-established the Bible teaching of the personality of God and of Christ and served as a foundation pillar for the advent people.

By examining the vision given to Ellen Harmon in February of 1845, we will also see the identity of the Holy Spirit revealed. Turning to page 54 of the book Early Writings we read a partial account of the vision sufficient for this purpose:

I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus' countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it ...Those who were bowed before the throne would offer up their prayers and look to Jesus; then He would look to His Father, and appear to be pleading with Him. A light would come from the Father to the Son and from the Son to the praying company. Then I saw an exceeding bright light come from the Father to the Son, and from the Son it waved over the people before the throne ... This company all received the light and rejoiced in it, and their countenances shone with its glory. I saw the Father rise from the throne, and in a flaming chariot go into the holy of holies within the veil, and sit down ... Then a cloudy chariot, with wheels like flaming fire, surrounded by angels, came to where Jesus was. He stepped into the chariot and was borne to the holiest, where the Father sat. There I beheld Jesus, a great High Priest, standing before the Father....Those who rose up with Jesus would send up their faith to Him in the holiest, and pray, "My Father, give us Thy Spirit." Then Jesus would breathe upon them the Holy Ghost. In that breath was light, power, and much love, joy, and peace. EW 54,55

Please note carefully what Mrs. White saw in vision:

(1)There are only two personal beings described sitting on the throne: the Father and the Son. Where is the Holy Spirit if it is a third co-equal personal God? Note also that she does not ask Jesus if the Holy Spirit has a form like Himself. Why not? From this evidence it is apparent that she understood that there are only two personal Divine Beings, the Father and His Son.

(2) Next note that when God's people pray “My Father, give us Thy Spirit” Jesus then breathes upon them the Holy Ghost. It is the Father’s Spirit that Jesus breathes. The fact that the Holy Ghost is breathed by Jesus gives it some more identification.

Now note the light coming from the Father to the Son and then to the praying company. Then notice that to those who prayed “My Father, give us Thy Spirit” was the Holy Ghost breathed upon them by Jesus. These are two parallel descriptions of the same sequence of events. The breathing of the Holy Ghost from Christ gave the company of believers light, power, and much love, joy, and peace. Thus the identity of the Holy Spirit is made plainer from this part of the vision.

(3) The Holy Spirit is not shown to be a third co-equal personal Divine Being like the Father and His Son. Instead, the Holy Spirit is seen to be light from the Father given first to Jesus, then breathed upon the praying company by Christ. In that breath there is much light, power, love, joy, and peace. The Holy Spirit IS THE VERY LIFE OF GOD THE FATHER and not a third Divine Being called God the Holy Spirit. This true identity of the Holy Spirit will now be confirmed from other Bible and Spirit of Prophecy quotes. We will see that:

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE BREATH OF LIFE, IS THE LIFE OF GOD THE FATHER AND THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD.

  2. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE PERSONAL PRESENCE AND OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD THE FATHER.

  3. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ALSO THE PERSONAL PRESENCE AND OMNIPRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD.

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE BREATH OF LIFE, IS THE LIFE OF GOD THE FATHER AND THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD.

To understand this truth we will first read of God’s original purpose in the creation.

From eternal ages it was God's purpose that every created being, from the bright and holy seraph to man, should be a temple for the indwelling of the Creator. All created beings live by the will and power of God. They are dependent recipients of the life of God. From the highest seraph to the humblest animate being, all are replenished from the Source of life. DA 785

First note that it is God the Father Himself who would live in all His created beings. Next note that it was God’s purpose that every created being and not every created thing should be a temple for His indwelling. This is an important truth to note as it does away the doctrine of pantheism. We next read of the creation of man.

When God had made man in His image, the human form was perfect in all its arrangements, but it was without life. Then a personal, self-existing God breathed into that form the breath of life, and man became a living, breathing, intelligent being. All parts of the human organism were put in action. The heart, the arteries, the veins, the tongue, the hands, the feet, the senses, the perceptions of the mind--all began their work, and all were placed under law. Man became a living soul. Through Jesus Christ a personal God created man and endowed him with intelligence and power. 8T 264

The First man, Adam, was made in God’s image. Note that the first man was made out of the dust of the ground.Then the breath of God’s life was breathed into him making him a living soul. However, through sin, man cut himself off from God, the source of all life. And thus, from His original purpose:

God is the fountain of life; and when one chooses the service of sin, he separates from God, and thus cuts himself off from life. He is “alienated from the life of God.” … God gives them existence for a time that they may develop their character and reveal their principles. This accomplished, they receive the results of their own choice. DA 764

But it is the purpose of the gospel to restore to fallen man the life of God, the life that he lost when he sinned.

When the gospel is received in its purity and power, it is a cure for the maladies that originated in sin. The Sun of righteousness arises "with healing in His wings" (Malachi 4:2). Not all that this world bestows can heal a broken heart, or impart peace of mind, or remove care, or banish disease. Fame, genius, talent--all are powerless to gladden the sorrowful heart or to restore the wasted life. The life of God in the soul is man's only hope. MH 115,1905

Heaven's plan of salvation is broad enough to embrace the whole world. God longs to breathe into prostrate humanity the breath of life. RH, June 24, 1915

Here we ask this question: What is the life of God, the breath of life that He longs to breathe into prostrate humanity and thus restore man to God’s original purpose?

Answer: Without the Holy Spirit, without the breath of God, there is torpidity of conscience, loss of spiritual life. Unless there is genuine conversion of the soul to God; unless the vital breath of God quickens the soul to spiritual life; unless the professors of truth are actuated by heaven-born principles, they are not born of the incorruptible seed, which liveth and abideth forever. RH, Dec 3, 1908

The Bible and Spirit of Prophecy are very plain when harmonized correctly. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God which is also the life of God. And we see this same truth from the Review and Herald in different words:

It is the Spirit of God in the soul that quickens its otherwise lifeless faculties, and attracts the soul to God and to the truth. The intellectual talents owe all their advancement to God, and our religious life is dead and spiritless, unless the living Spirit is received from God the life-giving power. Without the enlightenment of his Spirit, we cannot appreciate the things of the heavenly world, and cannot have a relish for communion with God. RH, July 19, 1887

The quickening of our souls with the Spirit of God will be accomplished for all who will receive Christ by faith as their personal Saviour. We read of this truth contained in the plan of salvation in the following words:

God has sent His Son to communicate His own life to humanity. Christ declares, “I live by the Father,” My life and His being one. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. “For as the Father hath life in Himself, so hath He given to the Son to have life in HimselfLUH, Dec 2, 1908

In Christ the cry of humanity reached the Father of infinite pity. As a man He supplicated the throne of God till His humanity was charged with a heavenly current that should connect humanity with divinity. Through continual communion He received life from God, that He might impart life to the world. His experience is to be ours. DA 363(1898)

Here Jesus tells us that He lives by His Father’s life; their life being one. Also note that His experience is to be ours. That means that when we commune with our Father in heaven through Christ, we receive life from Him just as Jesus does. This life that we receive is the Holy Spirit of the Father given to Christ and then to us. We do not receive a third divine Being called God the Holy Spirit. The following passages make this truth plain:

Jesus is waiting to breathe upon all his disciples, and give them the inspiration of his sanctifying spirit, and transfuse the vital influence from himself to his people... Their will must be submitted to his will, they must act with his spirit, that it may be no more they that live, but Christ that liveth in them. Jesus is seeking to impress upon them the thought that in giving his Holy Spirit he is giving to them the glory which the Father has given him, that he and his people may be one in God. ST, Oct 3, 1892

Christ gives them the breath of his own spirit, the life of his own life. RH, Nov 19, 1908

The Holy Spirit that Jesus breathes upon all his disciples here is described as a vital influence. The word “vital” means pertaining to life, contributing to life, containing life or being the seat of life. [See Webster’s 1828 dictionary] Thus the breath of God, the Holy Spirit, is shown in this passage to be the life of God the Father first given to His Son and from Christ to His people. Also note carefully now what Jesus is seeking to impress upon his disciples. Mrs. White did not say that by Christ giving his Holy Spirit that he was giving them a third personal Divine Being, God the Holy Spirit. No, instead she says that in giving his Holy Spirit, Christ is giving to them the glory [that is character] which the Father has given him that he and his people may be one in God; not part of a trinity of three co-equal and co-eternal Gods!

This next quote will also show that the Holy Spirit, the breath of God’s life, is also the impartation of His glory or character to His disciples:

The Holy Spirit is the breath of life in the soul. The breathing of Christ upon his disciples was the breath of true spiritual life. The disciples were to interpret this as imbuing them with the attributes of their Saviour, that in purity, faith, and obedience, they might exalt the law, and make it honorable. God's law is the expression of his character. By obedience to its requirements we meet God's standard of character. Thus the disciples were to witness for Christ. The impartation of the Spirit was the impartation of the very life of Christ, which was to qualify the disciples for their mission. RH, June 13, 1899

The Holy Spirit is the breath of life in the soul and the very impartation of the life of Christ. This Divine life imbues its receiver with the attributes or character of Christ.

Another way to say this truth is that the soul’s spiritual life is the Holy Spirit, the very life of God the Father given to Christ. Jesus then imparts this life to His disciple clothing the disciple with the righteousness of Christ. We see how the righteousness of Christ is obtained in the following words:

God is your Master, and you are his employed servants. The Holy Spirit must come in contact with your spirit, that it may divinely restore your soul, working your sanctification, and giving life and power to your efforts. When the life of God is restored to the soul, we rest in God, and are clothed with the righteousness of Christ. RH, May 20, 1890

Jesus said, Be perfect as your Father is perfect. If you are the children of God you are partakers of His nature, and you cannot but be like Him. Every child lives by the life of his father. If you are God's children, begotten by His Spirit, you live by the life of God. In Christ dwells "all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" (Col. 2:9); and the life of Jesus is made manifest "in our mortal flesh" (2 Cor. 4:11). That life in you will produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Him. Thus you will be in harmony with every precept of His law; for "the law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul" (Ps. 19:7, margin). Through love "the righteousness of the law" will be "fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Rom. 8:4). RC 73; Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 76-78

All of these quotes harmonized together, reveal the same truth that Mrs. White was shown in vision so many years before in 1845. The Holy Spirit is the breath of life, the life of God the Father given to His Son and then to His people. This life of God the Father will produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Christ bringing us into harmony with every precept of the Father’s law and thus, clothing us with the righteousness of Christ. In these words quoted above as well as in the passage to follow, is also presented the third angel’s message of Revelation 14.

The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God.

Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. TM 91, 92 (1895).

The life of God the Father is His Holy Spirit. This is the life that Christ lives by and is given to the helpless human agent who believes in Christ as his personal saviour. The human agent who is imbued with this life receives the very righteousness of Christ and reveals it by obedience to all the commandments of God. This is the substance of the third angel’s message.

And here also is another very important point to consider. The third angel’s message is to be attended with the outpouring of the Father’s Spirit in a large measure. How can God the Father pour out His Spirit in any measure on someone who professes to believe and teach that He is a trinity or that His own Spirit is a Divine Being separate from Himself? In other words, can a Holy God set the seal of His Holy Spirit of truth on a message or a messenger who promotes a false teaching concerning Himself? It is safe to say that such persons, whether they be trinitarians or tritheists, cannot be used by God to give the third angel’s message while they thus deny Him through their false representations of His personality and the personality of His Son. Passing from these momentous truths, we next see that:

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE PERSONAL PRESENCE AND OMNIPRESENCE OF GOD THE FATHER

The Holy Spirit of God the Father is not only His life and the life of Christ, but also the Father’s personal presence. We see this truth from the scriptures and Spirit of Prophecy:

Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Psalm 51:11

The divine Spirit that the world's Redeemer promised to send, is the presence and power of God. ST, Nov 23, 1891

David understood that the Father’s Holy Spirit was His very presence with him. We also read that the giving of the Father’s Spirit to us is the giving of Himself in the following passages:

In giving us His Spirit, God gives us Himself, making Himself a fountain of divine influences, to give health and life to the world. 7T 273

God calls upon all men to avail themselves of the blessings he has set before them, that they may co-operate with him in carrying forward the great work of redemption. He has given his Holy Spirit as a power sufficient to overcome all man's hereditary and cultivated tendencies to wrong. By yielding his capabilities to the control of this Spirit, man will be impressed with God's perfect character, and will become an instrument through which he can reveal his mercy, his goodness, and his love. ST, November 5, 1896

The Father Himself is given to the believer by His Holy Spirit. The believer is thus impressed with the Father’s perfect character and becomes an instrument through which the Father can reveal His mercy, goodness, and love. The Holy Spirit is the life and personal presence of God the Father. We see the omnipresence of God the Father from the following passages:

God is a spirit; yet He is a personal being, for man was made in His image. Ed 132

Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD. Jeremiah 23:23,24

Question: How does God the Father, a spirit; yet a personal Being, fill heaven and earth?

Answer:The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place, not in a state of inactivity, not in silence and solitude, but surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of holy beings, all waiting to do His will. Through these messengers He is in active communication with every part of His dominion. By His Spirit He is everywhere present. Through the agency of His Spirit and His angels He ministers to the children of men. Above the distractions of the earth He sits enthroned; all things are open to His divine survey; and from His great and calm eternity He orders that which His providence sees best. MH 417

The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. "The Lord's throne is in heaven" (Psalm 11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present. He has an intimate knowledge of, and a personal interest in, all the works of His hand. Ed 131

God the Father is not only present in every man who has accepted Him, but He is present everywhere by His Spirit. And so we have seen that the Holy Spirit is also the presence and omnipresence of God the Father. We will now see that:

  1. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ALSO THE PERSONAL PRESENCE AND OMNIPRESENCE OF JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD.

Jesus tells us that He lives by His Father [John chapter 6, verse 57] and that the Father has given His Spirit without measure to His Son [John chapter 3, verse 34] Thus it is that Christ lives by the Spirit or life of His Father. We see that the Spirit of the Father is also the Spirit of His Son from book of Romans:

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Romans 8:9-11

The Holy Spirit of God the Father is also the Spirit of Christ. They have/share/live by the same Spirit of the Father. Thus, as two personal Divine Beings, “They are one in purpose, in mind, in character, but not in person. It is thus that God and Christ are one.” MH 422

We now pay particular attention to the truth that the Holy Spirit is also the personal presence of Christ.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:16-18

Who is the Christian’s comforter? Before Jesus had spoken these words to his disciples, he told them that He would be going to prepare a place for them in His Father’s house. The disciples did not yet understand how Christ, who would be leaving them, would then be able to manifest Himself to them, and yet be invisible to the world. We read of this lack of understanding from one of Christ’s disciples:

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? John 14:22

Mrs. White makes this comment on this verse:

That Christ should manifest Himself to them, and yet be invisible to the world, was a mystery to the disciples. They could not understand the words of Christ in their spiritual sense. They were thinking of the outward, visible manifestation. They could not take in the fact that they could have the presence of Christ with them, and yet He be unseen by the world. They did not understand the meaning of a spiritual manifestation.” The Southern Work, Sept 13, 1898

It is Christ who is the believer’s comforter by His Holy Spirit. After Christ was to leave his disciples, he would yet be present with them by His Spirit. The Bible and Spirit of Prophecy show this truth plainly:

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. John 14:18; Matthew 28:20

Christ is formed within, and by His Spirit He fulfils the promise, "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee." ST, Sept 27, 1899

If by His Holy Spirit Christ abides in the soul, our features, our attitude, our words will reveal Him to the world. ST, Jan 6, 1898

This Comforter is the Holy Spirit,--the soul of his life, the efficacy of his church, the light and life of the world. With his Spirit Christ sends a reconciling influence and a power that takes away sin. RH, May 19, 1904

we adore God for His wondrous love in giving Jesus the Comforter. 19MR 297

Note from these texts who it is that will not leave His disciples comfortless. It is Jesus Himself who is the Christian’s comforter by His Holy Spirit.

We can also see the truth that Christ is our comforter more directly from the scriptures. The word translated “comforter” in John chapter 14, verse16 is “parakletos.” The word “parakletos” is also translated in 1 John chapter 2 and verse1 as “advocate.”

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter [parakletos], that he may abide with you for ever. John 14:16

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate [parakletos] with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1

The words “Comforter” and “Advocate” have exactly the same meaning in scripture. The text in 1 John then plainly identifies that it is Jesus Christ who is our advocate and comforter. Christ is personally present by His Holy Spirit with the believer.

And that Christ is omnipresent by His Spirit we see from the following:

Cumbered with humanity, Christ could not be in every place personally; therefore it was altogether for their advantage that He should leave them, go to His father, and send the Holy Spirit to be His successor on earth. The Holy Spirit is Himself divested of the personality of humanity and independent thereof. He would represent Himself as present in all places by His Holy Spirit, as the Omnipresent.” MR14, p. 23

We see the same truth from the following quote:

While Jesus ministers in the sanctuary above, He is still by His Spirit the minister of the church on earth. He is withdrawn from the eye of sense, but His parting promise is fulfilled, "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Matt. 28:20. While He delegates His power to inferior ministers, His energizing presence is still with His church. DA 166

The Holy Spirit is the one Spirit that proceeds from God the Father. The Holy Spirit is the Father’s life, presence, and omnipresence. The Holy Spirit has been given to Christ without measure [see John 3:34] and therefore is also the presence of Christ. The Father and His only begotten Son are omnipresent by their one Spirit which they share.

The nature of the Holy Spirit is a mystery. Just how a personal God, the Father can be seated on the throne of His universe and how Jesus, a personal Son, can minister in the sanctuary above and yet both Father and Son be everywhere present by their Holy Spirit, is a mystery not revealed to mortal minds.

And finally, as promised at the beginning of this presentation, we have this Bible testimony from the Holy Spirit itself that it is not a third co-equal and co-eternal God. We will see this truth revealed by the Holy Spirit as we apply the principle for searching the scriptures found in Isaiah chapter 28, verses 9 and10. We first read this verse from the gospel of John:

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure [unto him]. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John 3:34-35

We notice from this text that the Spirit was given to Jesus by His Father and that without measure. The following text confirms the one already quoted that the Holy Spirit comes from God the Father:

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 15:26

God the Father gave His Holy Spirit without measure to His Son. The Holy Spirit is also sent to Christ’s disciples as we noted from this passage and in the following experience of the apostle Paul:

Brother Saul, the Lord, [even] Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. Acts 9:17

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. John 3:34-35

And we already noted earlier that Christ received the Holy Spirit without measure from His Father. In this Bible verse as well as the one in the book of Acts, we see that both the Son of God and Paul the apostle were filled with the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is also known as the Spirit of truth. And here we ask this question, the answer to which is most revealing: What was the testimony of the Spirit of truth that moved the Son of God to speak and Paul the apostle to write concerning the God the Father?

Let us hear the testimony of Jesus first:

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. John 17:3

And of Paul:

But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. 1Corinthians 8:6

Now let everyone think carefully who still believes that the Holy Spirit is a third co-equal and co-eternal God with the Father and His Son. What is the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of truth doing here confessing in Christ and through Paul that there is but one God, the Father - the only true God if the Holy Spirit is a co-equal and co-eternal God Himself along with the Father and His Son? Instead, the Holy Spirit acknowledges that there is but one God, the Father - the only true God. This is certainly conclusive Bible testimony from the Holy Spirit itself that it is not a third Divine Being. Rather, as this presentation has shown, the Holy Spirit is the very life and presence of God the Father and of His only-begotten Son. By Christ giving the Holy Spirit to the human agent, He is giving the glory which His Father has given Him that He and His people may be one in God. A-men.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 8:15

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Galatians 4:6

One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Ephesians 4:6

As Seventh Day Adventists, we understand that the mark of the beast has to do with the time that is shortly to come upon us when the United States of America (under the influence of Rome) shall enforce Sunday observance. See 1911 GC p. 579-580.

However, a reading of Revelation 14:7 shows that more than Sabbath/Sunday observance is involved in the three angel's messages, and consequently, the mark of the beast.

According to Rev. 14:7, before Sabbath/Sunday observance ever becomes an issue for a Christian they must know: who is it that I worship? Who exactly is the God who made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters? Therefore, the issue before every Seventh Day Adventist is not only on what day of the week the true Sabbath is to be kept in memorial of our creator, but, WHO IS THE GOD THAT YOU WORSHIP.

Looking back to the nineteenth century, the Seventh Day Adventist pioneers were standing on the platform of eternal truth concerning the true identity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They knew the true identity of God whom they worshiped. Therefore, their focus was primarily on the Sunday/Sabbath aspect of the mark of the beast.

Since Ellen White died and the pioneers along with her, The Seventh Day Adventist church has left the platform of eternal truth concerning the true doctrine of the Godhead. By accepting the doctrine of the trinity, the true identity of the personality of God and of Christ has been obliterated within Adventism. As a direct result, the three angel's messages cannot possibly be given by the church while in such a condition of apostasy.

Many Seventh Day Adventists today are very vocal about promoting the seventh day Sabbath as the true Sabbath, and yet sadly, at the same time they proclaim (albeit some ignorantly) the central doctrine of the Catholic faith - the trinity. Note the following relation that Roman Catholicism makes between Sunday observance and the trinity:

Catholic Reasons for keeping Sunday: “Because it is a day dedicated by the apostles to the honor of the most Holy Trinity.” RH April 4, 1854.

When the final test comes concerning the enforcement of Sunday worship for Seventh Day Adventists, what will happen to those Adventists who profess to observe the true Sabbath and yet are found to be worshipers of a false God? Is it possible to profess to worship the trinity and be found a true Sabbath keeper? The 10 commandments tell us "no". The Spirit of Prophecy also tells us "no". Consider the following quote from the Review and Herald, July 13, 1897:

"The third angel's message has been sent forth to the world, warning men against receiving the mark of the beast or of his image in their foreheads or in their hands. To receive this mark means to come to the same decision as the beast has done, and to advocate the same ideas, in direct opposition to the word of God." ... If the light of truth has been presented to you, revealing the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, and showing that there is no foundation in the word of God for Sunday observance, and yet you still cling to the false Sabbath, refusing to keep holy the Sabbath which God calls "My holy day," you receive the mark of the beast. When does this take place?--When you obey the decree that commands you to cease from labor on Sunday and worship God, while you know that there is not a word in the Bible showing Sunday to be other than a common working-day, you consent to receive the mark of the beast, and refuse the seal of God. {RH, July 13, 1897}

Note that it is not only necessary to obey the decree that commands you to cease from labor on Sunday and worship God in order to receive the mark of the beast. "To receive this mark means to come to the same decision as the beast has done, and to advocate the same ideas, in direct opposition to the word of God." To come to the same decision as the beast has done in advocating the doctrine of the trinity in direct opposition to the word of God will also cause all such persons who do this to receive the mark of the beast.

This is a very grave and serious issue. May God awaken the minds of all Seventh Day Adventists to this fearful and solemn issue which means so much to us as a people.

The following paper is a compilation of quotes from the Spirit of Prophecy that are arranged in sequence according to the plan of salvation. Each quote contains the word "flow" highlighted in blue print. I found this compilation to be an excellent complement to the paper: "Breath of God the Breath of Life." The paper flows really well from start to finish!

Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow

God is love. Like rays of light from the sun, love and light and joy flow out from Him to all His creatures. It is His nature to give. His very life is the outflow of unselfish love. {MB 77.2}

God is the source of life and light and joy to the universe. Like rays of light from the sun, like the streams of water bursting from a living spring, blessings flow out from Him to all His creatures. {SC 77.1}

Such was the condition that existed in heaven before the disaffection of Satan. The heavenly current flowed through the universe of God without one cloud of evil to cast a shadow upon its bright waters. Everywhere spotless purity was reflected as in a mirror. And God was over all. But Satan fell. The human race were created. Adam and Eve fell. And now the Lord Jesus has himself bridged the gulf that sin has made, and the whole scheme of redemption has been put in operation to restore the moral image of God in man. {1888 1428.1}

When the earth was created, it was holy and beautiful. God pronounced it very good. Every flower, every shrub, every tree, answered the purpose of its Creator. Everything upon which the eye rested was lovely and filled the mind with thoughts of the love of God. Through tempting man to sin, Satan hoped to counteract the tide of divine love flowing to the human race; but, instead of this, his work resulted in calling forth new and deeper manifestations of God's mercy and goodness. {7T 87.1}

The value of man is estimated in heaven according to the capacity of the heart to know God. This knowledge is the spring from which flows all power. God created man that every faculty might be the faculty of the divine mind; and He is ever seeking to bring the human mind into association with the divine. {RC 156.6}

The tide of woe that flowed from the transgression of our first parents is regarded by many as too awful a consequence for so small a sin, and they impeach the wisdom and justice of God in His dealings with man. But if they would look more deeply into this question, they might discern their error. God created man after His own likeness, free from sin. The earth was to be peopled with beings only a little lower than the angels; but their obedience must be tested; for God would not permit the world to be filled with those who would disregard His law. Yet, in His great mercy, He appointed Adam no severe test. And the very lightness of the prohibition made the sin exceedingly great. If Adam could not bear the smallest of tests, he could not have endured a greater trial had he been entrusted with higher responsibilities. {PP 60.4}

Man has forsaken God in almost everything, and has turned the attention to self. He has left the pure springs of living waters which flow from the throne of God, and hewn out to himself broken cisterns, which can hold no water. God gave man a probation that he might be fitted for heaven. He was to look upward to God, who was to be the soul's adoration; but talent, skill, and inventive powers are all exercised to make self the supreme object of attention. Man has withdrawn his gaze from Deity, and fastened his eyes upon the finite, the earthly, the corruptible. {RH, December 9, 1884 par. 10}

The adversary of souls is ever on the alert to open channels for the unrestrained flow of evil in our nature, that we have not overcome; for he desires that we may be ruined, and be condemned before God. {ST, August 26, 1889 par. 6}

This spirit of greed and lust is in the world, all about us, but it will not do for us to float along with the current of covetousness that flows on all sides. {ST, January 12, 1891}

Infidelity and skepticism prevail. Iniquity abounds. Corruption flows in the vital currents of the soul, and rebellion against God breaks out in the life. Enslaved by sin, the moral powers are under the tyranny of Satan. The soul is made the sport of his temptation; and unless some mighty arm is stretched out to rescue him, man goes where the arch rebel leads the way. {PUR, May 22, 1902 par. 1}

The only satisfaction Satan takes in playing the game of life for the souls of men is the satisfaction he takes in hurting the heart of Christ. Though He was rich, for our sake Christ became poor, that we through His poverty might be made rich. Yet in view of this great fact, the majority of the world permit earthly possessions to eclipse heavenly attractions. They set their affections upon earthly things, and turn away from God. What a grievous sin it is that men will not come to their senses, and understand how foolish it is to permit inordinate affections for earthly things to expel the love of God from the heart. When the love of God is expelled, the love of the world quickly flows in to supply the vacuum. The Lord alone can cleanse the soul temple from the moral defilement. {CS 136.2}

For ages sin had interrupted the flow of divine benevolence to man; but God's mercy and love for the fallen race have not ceased to accumulate, nor lost their earthward direction. The inhabitants of the world, their reason perverted, have turned the earth into a lazar-house. But God still lives and reigns, and in Christ He has poured on the world a healing flood. In the gift of God's dear Son, a definite view of His character has been given to the race that is never absent from His mind. His very heart is laid open in the royal law. That infinite standard is presented to all, that there may be no mistake in regard to that kind of people God would have compose His kingdom. It is only those who are obedient to all His commandments who will become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. {ST, November 17, 1898 par. 8}

Shall man set up his will against the will of God? Shall we be disobedient to the commands of so mighty a Ruler? Shall we contend with the Most High, who is the source of all power, and from whose heart flows infinite love and blessing to the creatures of His care? {LS 230.3}

God prepared the way for the coming of his Son by scattering the Old Testament Scriptures among heathen and idolaters. Divine power went with the Word. It carried with it the evidence of its power; for it bore the divine credentials. Thus the way was prepared for the great Teacher. "But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth his Son." Christ came to teach lessons that would echo and re-echo from generation to generation. The teaching of the rabbis consisted of a monotonous repetition of maxims and traditions. Christ spoke with an assurance that impressed his hearers. His whole being was charged with divine love. His heart was filled with sympathy for mental and physical distress, which he met wherever he went. He bore a living testimony that he came not to destroy life, but to save it. By look and word he drew men to himself. Sympathy and love flowed from him to the distressed and suffering. The beauty of his countenance and the loveliness of his character attracted the people. No sooner did they look upon his face, and hear his gracious words, than their hearts were filled with a warm glow of love. {YI, September 13, 1900 par. 1

The Lord of glory clothed his divinity with humanity, and came to our world to endure self-denial and self-sacrifice, in order that the moral image of God might be restored in man. All the heavenly attributes were in his heart in abundance, and flowed out in an irrepressible stream of good works. Mark how readily and heartily he ministered to those in need, how his eyes took in the situation of every tempted soul, how his heart was touched with human woe! {RH, March 1, 1898 par. 2}

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. . . . And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace." This is the vital current that is to flow from the heart of Christ as living water into the human vessel, from whence it again flows in rich currents, revealing Jesus, the fountainhead. {RH, February 18, 1896 par. 10}

We behold God in Jesus. Looking unto Jesus we see that it is the glory of our God to give. "I do nothing of myself," said Christ; "the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father." "I seek not mine own glory," but the glory of Him that sent Me (John 8:28; 6:57; 8:50; 7:18). In these words is set forth the great principle which is the law of life for the universe. All things Christ received from God, but He took to give. So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father's life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all. And thus through Christ the circuit of beneficence is complete, representing the character of the great Giver, the law of life. {DA 19-21}

Christ represented his Father; he knew how the Father would do under any and every circumstance, and he did just as the Father would do. He made manifest in his work the ways of God. The living God was working through his Son. Jesus, when he was found in fashion as a man, had a realizing sense of the world's needs, and he employed his human, God-given powers for the benefit of men, while in every act of mercy and healing he drew upon the divine power, even the power that made the worlds. The Lord Jesus is all ready to impart the very same aid to all who will consecrate their powers to his service, who feel the need of the impartation of his grace. To all who desire to be recipients of his Spirit, the virtue flows out from Christ. And it is in this way that the character of God, the perfection of Christ and the Father, is brought before the world. The human agent is complete in Christ. Learning in the school of Christ, daily studying his life, we become one with him, and reflect the virtues of his character. {RH, October 14, 1902 par. 11}

The importance and the opportunities of the home life are illustrated in the life of Jesus. He who came from heaven to be our example and teacher spent thirty years as a member of the household at Nazareth. Concerning these years the Bible record is very brief. No mighty miracles attracted the attention of the multitude. No eager throngs followed His steps or listened to His words. Yet during all these years He was fulfilling His divine mission. He lived as one of us, sharing the home life, submitting to its discipline, performing its duties, bearing its burdens. In the sheltering care of a humble home, participating in the experiences of our common lot, He "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." Luke 2:52. During all these secluded years His life flowed out in currents of sympathy and helpfulness. His unselfishness and patient endurance, His courage and faithfulness, His resistance of temptation, His unfailing peace and quiet joyfulness, were a constant inspiration. He brought a pure, sweet atmosphere into the home, and His life was as leaven working amidst the elements of society. None said that He had wrought a miracle; yet virtue--the healing, life-giving power of love--went out from Him to the tempted, the sick, and the disheartened. In an unobtrusive way, from His very childhood, He ministered to others, and because of this, when He began His public ministry, many heard Him gladly. {MH 350.1}

Jesus was the fountain of healing mercy for the world; and through all those secluded years at Nazareth, his life flowed out in currents of sympathy and tenderness. The aged, the sorrowing, and the sin-burdened, the children at play in their innocent joy, the little creatures of the groves, the patient beasts of burden,--all were happier for his presence. He whose word of power upheld the worlds, would stoop to relieve a wounded bird. There was nothing beneath his notice, nothing to which he disdained to minister. {YI, May 25, 1909 par. 10}

Christ went about doing good, feeding the hungry, healing the sick, comforting the downcast. None in need of succor went from Him without finding sympathy--sympathy shown not only in word but in deed. In His presence every stricken, sorrowing heart was soothed and lightened. He did not think of Himself or seek His own interests. He lived to benefit others, to bring relief to the suffering and oppressed. The unwearied servant of man's necessity, He was blessed Himself in relieving others. His heart of love was a fountain of blessings that ever flowed forth to gladden hearts. {18MR 175.3}

The Sabbath was Christ's busiest day for healing the sick. On this day He could best reach those who were laboring during the week. Wherever He went, He was a medical missionary, an unerring physician, speaking words of comfort and love. From Him flowed a stream of healing power, and the sick were made whole. He healed men and women with unhesitating willingness and with hearty joyfulness; for He was glad to be able to restore suffering ones to health. {5MR 84.2}

Varied were the circumstances and needs of those who besought His aid, and none who came to Him went away unhelped. From Him flowed a stream of healing power, and in body and mind and soul men were made whole. {MH 17.2}

During every hour of Christ's sojourn upon the earth, the love of God was flowing from Him in irrepressible streams. All who are imbued with His Spirit will love as He loved. The very principle that actuated Christ will actuate them in all their dealing one with another. {LHU 298.2}

It was the joy of Christ's soul to do good to men. Many times He sighed in spirit and was very sorrowful. Many times His tears flowed, expressing His anguish of soul when He beheld the unbelief, the ingratitude, and felt the hatred of those He came to bless and save. Jesus in heaven looks with grief upon the insensibility of souls upon whom the richest of His favors have been poured without effect. He has made man, given him the wondrous faculties of the mind, the noble affections of the heart, and these gifts they use against the Giver. They despise obedience to Christ. Their ears are not inclined to hear His voice, their tongues speak not His praise. {11MR 26.3}

The humanity of Christ received the fallen foe and engaged in battle with him. He was sustained in the conflict by divine power just as man will be sustained by his being a partaker of the divine nature. He gained victory after victory as our Champion, the Captain of our salvation, and the divine approval of God and all the universe of heaven flowed into His soul. His nature was shocked almost unto death, but the heavenly angels ministered unto the suffering One. {16MR 183.3}

Christ overcame Satan on every point. The wily foe could not induce Him to swerve from His allegiance to the Father. "Get thee behind Me, Satan," Christ said; "for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve." The Captain of our salvation overcame for us; Satan left the field a conquered foe. But the strain upon Christ had left Him as one dead. "And, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him." Their arms encircled Him. Upon the breast of the highest angel in heaven His head rested. Divine consolation flowed into His soul. The foe was vanquished. Humanity was placed on vantage ground. Christ had conquered. Those who became partakers of the divine nature would be able to resist the temptations of the enemy. {BEcho, September 3, 1900 par. 12}

"Jesus said, "I lay down my life for the sheep. . .Therefore doth my Father love me." By taking your sins upon myself, I am opening a channel through which his Grace can flow to all who will accept it. In giving myself for the sins of the world, I have prepared a way for the unrepressed tide of his love to flow to men. {PC 339.1}

There stood the Son of God, wearing the robe of mockery and the crown of thorns. Stripped to the waist, His back showed the long, cruel stripes from which the blood flowed freely. His face was stained with blood, and bore the marks of exhaustion and pain; but never had it appeared more beautiful. Every feature expressed gentleness and resignation, and the tenderest pity for His cruel foes. In striking contrast was the prisoner at His side. Every line of the countenance of Barabbas showed him to be the hardened ruffian that he was. Among the beholders there were some who sympathized with Jesus. Even the priests and rulers were convicted that He was what He claimed to be. But they would not yield. They had moved the mob to a mad fury, and again priests, rulers, and people raised the cry: "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" {SJ 136.3}

Christ's enemies had demanded a miracle as evidence of His divinity. They had evidence far greater than any they had sought. As their cruelty degraded His torturers below humanity into the likeness of Satan, so did His meekness and patience exalt Jesus above humanity, and prove His kinship to God. His abasement was the pledge of His exaltation. The blood drops of agony that from His wounded temples flowed down His face and beard were the pledge of His anointing with "the oil of gladness" (Heb. 1:9.) as our great high priest. {DA 734.4}

There is a corrupt harmony in the feelings of all, from the hypocritical priests and the elders down to the most debased. Christ, the precious Son of God, was led forth, and the cross was laid upon his shoulders. At every step was left blood which flowed from his wounds. Thronged by an immense crowd of bitter enemies and unfeeling spectators, he is led away to the crucifixion. "He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. {ST, August 21, 1879 par. 13}

As man's substitute and surety, the iniquity of men was laid upon Christ; he was counted a transgressor that he might redeem them from the curse of the law. The guilt of every descendant of Adam of every age was pressing upon his heart; and the wrath of God, and the terrible manifestation of his displeasure because of iniquity, filled the soul of his Son with consternation. The withdrawal of the divine countenance from the Saviour, in this hour of supreme anguish, pierced his heart with a sorrow that can never be fully understood by man. Every pang endured by the Son of God upon the cross, the blood drops that flowed from his head, his hands, and feet, the convulsions of agony which racked his frame, and the unutterable anguish that filled his soul at the hiding of his Father's face from him, speak to man, saying, It is for love of thee that the Son of God consents to have these heinous crimes laid upon him; for thee he spoils the domain of death, and opens the gates of Paradise and immortal life. He who stilled the angry waves by his word, and walked the foam-capped billows, who made devils tremble, and disease flee from his touch, who raised the dead to life and opened the eyes of the blind,--offers himself upon the cross as the last sacrifice for man. He, the sin-bearer, endures judicial punishment for iniquity, and becomes sin itself for man. {3SP 162.2}

It was not the dread of death which caused the inexpressible agony of Jesus. To believe this would be to place him beneath the martyrs in courage and endurance; for many of those who have died for their faith, yielded to torture and death, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer for Christ's sake. Christ was the prince of sufferers; but it was not bodily anguish that filled him with horror and despair; it was a sense of the malignity of sin, a knowledge that man had become so familiar with sin that he did not realize its enormity, that it was so deeply rooted in the human heart as to be well-nigh impossible to eradicate. It was the guilt of sin, bringing the Father's wrath upon him as man's substitute, that broke the heart of the Son of God. Every pang that he endured upon the cross, the blood-drops that flowed from his head, his hands, and feet, the agony that racked his frame, and the unutterable anguish that filled his soul at the hiding of his Father's face, speak to man, saying, It is for love of thee that the Son of God consents to have these heinous crimes laid upon him; for thee he spoils the domain of death, and opens the gates of Paradise and immortal life. He who stilled the angry waves by his word, and walked the foam-capped billows, who made devils tremble, and disease flee from his touch, who opened the eyes of the blind, and raised the dead to life,--offers himself upon the cross as the all-sufficient sacrifice for man. {PrT, February 4, 1886 par. 1}

"Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar; and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to His mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, It is finished." There was a shriek, shrill and agonizing, and the Son of God expired. He died of a broken heart. When the spear was thrust into His side, there flowed forth blood and water. His heart was broken by His mental agony. And the hearts of all who seek the Lord and find Him will be broken as they see the result of sin. {ST, April 14, 1898 par. 10}

It was a costly sacrifice that the Lord of heaven made. Divine benevolence was stirred to its unfathomable depths; it was impossible for God to give more. "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Why is our gratitude so limited? It is only as a ripple on the surface compared with the great tide of love that flows to us from the Father. {AUCR, October 7, 1907 par. 6}

Who can comprehend the love here displayed? The angelic host beheld with wonder and with grief Him who had been the majesty of Heaven, and who had worn the crown of glory, now wearing the crown of thorns, a bleeding victim to the rage of an infuriated mob, who were fired to insane madness by the wrath of Satan. Behold the patient sufferer! Upon his head is the thorny crown! His life blood flows from every lacerated vein! All this was in consequence of sin! Nothing could have induced Christ to leave his honor and majesty in Heaven, and come to a sinful world, to be neglected, despised, and rejected, by those he came to save, and finally to suffer upon the cross, but eternal, redeeming love, which will ever remain a mystery. {ST, August 21, 1879 par. 10}

The Highest, who was with the Father before the world was, submitted to humiliation that He might uplift humanity. Prophecy withdraws the veil, that we may behold the throne of heaven, that we may see upon that throne, high and lifted up, One who in human form came to our world to suffer, to be lacerated with stripes, and bruised for our iniquities. "The chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed." Before the heavenly universe the Lord of Glory suffered in human form that sin might be pardoned, and sinners redeemed. He died that the love of God, as a mighty helper, might flow to all suffering human beings. Through yielding to sin, man placed his will under the control of Satan. He became a helpless captive in the tempter's power. God sent His Son into our world to break the power of Satan, and to emancipate the will of man. He sent Him to proclaim liberty to the captives, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free. By pouring the whole treasury of heaven into this world, by giving us in Christ all heaven, God has purchased the will, the affections, the mind, the soul, of every human being. When man places himself under the control of God, the will becomes firm and strong to do right, the heart is cleansed from selfishness and filled with Christ-like love. The mind yields to the authority of the law of love, and every thought is brought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. The powers, hitherto "members of unrighteousness," and "servants of sin," are consecrated to the service of the God of love. {AUCR, June 1, 1900 par. 10}

The Lord purifies the heart very much as we air a room. We do not close the doors and windows and throw in some purifying substance; but we open the doors and throw wide the windows, and let heaven's purifying atmosphere flow in. The Lord says, "He that doeth truth cometh to the light" (John 3:21). The windows of impulse, of feeling, must be opened up toward heaven, and the dust of selfishness and earthliness must be expelled. The grace of God must sweep through the chambers of the mind, the imagination must have heavenly themes for contemplation, and every element of the nature must be purified and vitalized by the Spirit of God. {YRP 293.3}

From the smitten rock in Horeb first flowed the living stream that refreshed Israel in the desert. During all their wanderings, wherever the need existed, they were supplied with water by a miracle of God's mercy. . . . The smitten rock was a figure of Christ, and through this symbol the most precious spiritual truths are taught. As the life-giving waters flowed from the smitten rock, so from Christ, "smitten of God," "wounded for our transgressions," "bruised for our iniquities" (Isa. 53:4, 5), the stream of salvation flows for a lost race. As the rock had been once smitten, so Christ was to be "once offered to bear the sins of many" (Heb. 9:28). Our Saviour was not to be sacrificed a second time; and it is only necessary for those who seek the blessings of His grace to ask in the name of Jesus, pouring forth the heart's desire in penitential prayer. Such prayer will bring before the Lord of hosts the wounds of Jesus, and then will flow forth afresh the life-giving blood, symbolized by the flowing of the living water for Israel. . . . {TMK 23.4}

In this portion of sacred history is a precious lesson of faith for all who are convicted of sin, and weighed down with a sense of their unworthiness. When they compare their characters with God's great standard of right, they see themselves condemned as transgressors. There is no power in law to free them from their guilt. But as they confess their sins, they can find pardon through Christ. From him flows the cleansing stream that can wash away the stains of sin. When the sinner has come to Christ with contrition of soul, confessing his transgressions, it is then his duty to appropriate to himself the Saviour's promise of pardon to the repentant and believing. He who seeks to find goodness and cause for rejoicing in himself, will always be in despair; but he who looks to Jesus, the author and finisher of his faith, can say with confidence, "I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." {SW, June 7, 1904 par. 5}

"In all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people" (Heb. 2:17), through the atonement. The repenting sinner is to believe in Christ as his personal Saviour. This is his only hope. He may lay hold on the merits of the blood of Christ, presenting to God the crucified and risen Saviour as his worthiness. Thus through Christ's offering of Himself, the innocent for the guilty, every obstruction is removed, and the pardoning love of God flows forth in rich streams of mercy to fallen man. . . . {TDG 38.3}

The transforming influence of truth sanctifies the soul. He loves the commandments of God. His fear and condemnation are gone. The love of Christ, expressed in His great sacrifice to save man, has broken every barrier down. The love of God flows into the soul, and gratitude springs up in the heart that was as cold as a stone. Christ crucified, Christ our righteousness, wins the heart and brings it to repentance. This theme is so simple that children can grasp it, the wise and learned are charmed with it, while they behold it in its depths of wisdom, love, and power which they can never fathom. We want to present this precious truth to the people who are bound in sin. Let all see that Christ was slain for their transgressions, that He desires to save them. {ML 265.3}

In God's forgiveness the heart of the erring one is drawn close to the great heart of Infinite Love. The tide of divine compassion flows into the sinner's soul, and from him to the souls of others. The tenderness and mercy that Christ has revealed in His own precious life will be seen in those who become sharers of His grace. . . . {RC 275.6}

Every soul that believes in Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour, what then? Then the love flows from the heart of God to his heart. What does that heart do then? It turns to serve God and keep His commandments lest it will be found as Adam and Eve were after their transgression. We cannot afford that. We cannot afford to sin. Sin is an expensive business. . . . {TDG 86.2}

When man believes in Christ as his personal Saviour, he is eating the daily bread which has been purchased for him at an infinite cost. As by eating temporal food the physical system becomes strong, so by eating the flesh of the Son of God the spiritual nature is strengthened. God's word is life to all who appropriate it. He who partakes of Christ's flesh and blood is a partaker of the divine nature. He is a branch of the Living Vine. As in nature the branch receives nourishment by its connection with the parent stalk, so the believer receives his life from Christ. A vital, life-giving current flows from the Saviour to him. {YI, July 13, 1899 par. 5}

As the light of Christ is received into the soul, the spirit is softened. The gentleness of Christ is expressed in the life. The personal influence of the humble, consecrated soul, like the fragrance of a flower, extends far beyond himself. There is something about him that does not consist in display. It is a spiritual power which he receives from the two anointed ones that stand before the Lord of the whole earth. The Holy Spirit, coming from God to the instrumentality He employs, flows forth into other lives, making others labourers together with God. {AUCR, June 1, 1900 par. 49}

The appearance of one of these brethren impressed me forcibly; his countenance bore in so marked a manner the impress of the spirit of Jesus that one could but say, This man is indeed born of God. He is poor, dependent upon his daily labor for support, and on account of the Sabbath he expects to lose his position; he is no longer young, and infirmities press upon him; but he has the peace of Christ. The truth he loves has done much for him; there has been a decided change in his whole life. The fountain has been purified, and the change is evinced by the sweetness of the stream that flows from it. The renewed man can say, "For me to live is Christ." {RH, October 19, 1886 par. 8}

The infinite God, said Jesus, makes it your privilege to approach Him by the name of Father. Understand all that this implies. No earthly parents ever pleaded so earnestly with an erring child as He who made you pleads with the transgressor. No human, loving interest ever followed the impenitent with such tender invitations. God dwells in every abode; He hears every word that is spoken, listens to every prayer that is offered, tastes the sorrows and disappointments of every soul, regards the treatment that is given to father, mother, sister, friend, and neighbor. He cares for our necessities, and His love and mercy and grace are continually flowing to satisfy our need. {LHU 45.6}

O how good the Lord is to us all, and how safely we may trust Him! He calls us His little children. Then let us come to Him as to a loving Father. It is His desire that the bright beams of His righteousness shall shine forth from our faces and in our words and deeds. If we will love one another as Christ has loved us, the barriers that separate us from God and from one another will be broken down, and many obstacles that hinder the Holy Spirit's flowing from heart to heart will be removed. . . . Trust Him with all your heart. He will carry you and your burdens. {ML 185.3}

All heaven rejoices at the redemption of the lost race. Christ rejoiced in the secret consciousness of what He purposed to do for man. He desires to do far more abundantly than we are able to ask or think. The fountain of His inexpressible love is inexhaustible, and it flows toward all those who believe in Him. {TMK 107.5}

If God and Christ and angels rejoice when even one sinner repents and becomes obedient to Christ, should not man be imbued with the same spirit, and work for time and for eternity with persevering effort to save, not only his own soul, but the souls of others? If you work in this direction with wholehearted interest as the followers of Christ, discharging every duty, improving every opportunity, your own souls will be gradually settling into the mold of a perfect Christian. The heart will not be sere and unfeeling. The spiritual life will not be dwarfed. The heart will glow with the impress of the divine image, for it will be in close sympathy with God. The whole life will flow out with cheerful readiness in channels of love and sympathy for humanity. Self will be forgotten, and the ways of this class will be established in God. In watering others their own souls will be watered. The stream flowing through their souls is from a living spring and is flowing out to others in good deeds, in earnest, unselfish effort for their salvation. In order to be a fruitful tree, the soul must derive its support and nourishment from the Fountain of Life and must be in harmony with the Creator. {WM 307.1}

The scion becomes a part of the living vine by forming a perfect union with it. Thus it is with the sinner. By repentance and faith, he becomes connected with Jesus Christ, and lives in him. This connection joins soul to soul,--the finite with the infinite. But, contrary to nature, the branch which has been united with the true vine brings forth, not fruit of its own kind, but the fruit of the vine of which it has become a part. The Spirit of Christ, flowing into the hearts of all who are indeed united with him, makes them partakers of the divine nature. They become pure, even as he is pure. Yet true disciples are the last to claim as their own this precious fruit. "Accepted in the Beloved," objects of their Heavenly Father's constant care and unfailing mercy, they feel unworthy of the divine favor, and have too vivid a sense of utter dependence upon God to boast of their exalted position. {RH, September 20, 1881 par. 4}

Now that we are branches of the Living Vine we will be nourished by the sap that flows from the Vine. It flows all the time to every branch, and every branch will bear fruit to the glory of God. "It is your Father's good pleasure" "that ye bear much fruit." Well then, what is our position? It must be a position of living faith. {FW 65.2}

As by eating temporal food the physical system becomes strong, so by eating the flesh and drinking the blood of the Son of God, the spiritual nature is strengthened. God's Word is spirit and life to all who appropriate it. He who partakes of Christ's flesh and blood is a partaker of the divine nature. . . . A vital, life-giving current flows from his Saviour to him. {OHC 209.3}

The words of Inspiration, pondered in the heart, will be as living streams flowing from the river of the water of life. Our Saviour prayed that the mind of His followers might be opened to understand the Scriptures. Whenever we study the Bible with a prayerful heart, the Holy Spirit is near to open to us the meaning of the words we read. The man whose mind is enlightened by the opening of God's Word to his understanding will not only feel that he must more diligently seek to understand that Word, but that he must have a better understanding of the sciences. He will feel that he is called to a high calling in Christ Jesus. {YRP 113.1}

Christ's gracious presence in His Word is ever speaking to the soul, representing Him as the well of living water to refresh the thirsting. It is our privilege to have a living, abiding Saviour. He is the source of spiritual power implanted within us, and His influence will flow forth in words and actions, refreshing all within the sphere of our influence, begetting in them desires and aspirations for strength and purity, for holiness and peace, and for that joy which brings with it no sorrow. This is the result of an indwelling Saviour (Letter 73, 1897).

Persevering prayer has been made a condition of receiving. We must pray always if we would grow in faith and experience. We are to be instant in prayer,--"to continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving." Peter exhorts believers to be "sober, and watch unto prayer." Paul directs: "In everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God." "But ye, beloved," says Jude, "praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God." Unceasing prayer is the unbroken union of the soul with God, so that life from God flows into our life, and from our life purity and holiness flow back to God. {ST, August 21, 1884 par. 10}

We are to behold Christ, and by beholding to become changed. We must come to Him, as to an open, inexhaustible fountain, from which we may drink again and again, and ever find a fresh supply. We are to respond to the drawing of his love, to feed on the Bread of life which came down from heaven, to drink of the water of life which flows from the throne of God. We are to keep looking up that faith may bind us to the throne of God. Do not look down, as though you were bound to the earth. Do not keep up an examination of your faith, pulling it up, as though it were a flower, to see if it has any root. Faith grows imperceptibly; and when the enemy rallies his forces to bring you into a critical place, the angels of God will be round about you, and you will have help from on high; for your prayer will be answered in the conflict. If you have genuine faith, you will praise God from whom all blessings flow, and as you praise Him you will realize more of his blessing. As God gives us light, we are to make use of it. We shall have no second ray until we have appreciated and appropriated the first. {BEcho, February 15, 1893 par. 6}

The Lord is looking upon men in the different spheres in which they move, and the character is tested under the different circumstances in which they are placed. The truth, pure, refined, elevating, is a continual test, to measure the man. If truth controls the conscience and is an abiding principle in the heart, it becomes an active, working agent; it works by love, and purifies the soul. But if the knowledge of the truth produces no beauty in the soul, if it does not, subdue, soften, and recreate the man after God's own image, it is of no benefit to the receiver; it is as sounding brass or tinkling cymbal. The truth as it is in Jesus, planted in the heart by the Holy Spirit, always works from within outward; it will be revealed in our words and spirit and actions toward every one with whom we are connected. The wave of truth flowing from the infinitely wise God to His frail human agents, is not subject to the will of man. God prescribes the terms, and specifies every condition upon which we may receive His gifts. With the one party there is infinite power, wisdom, mercy, and goodness; with the other party is weakness, and ignorance, and helplessness, and sin. Even the faculties and resources of men, which God will accept in cooperation with the divine, are ours only in trust. In the great condescension of God to admit finite beings as co-laborers in the saving of the world, He makes it a condition that the human agent shall receive counsel from God, diligently obeying every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. And our success in the religious life will be according to the integrity and thoroughness with which these conditions are fulfilled. {PC 148.2}

Religion is founded upon love to God, which also leads us to love one another. It is full of gratitude, humility, long-suffering. It is self-sacrificing, forbearing, merciful, and forgiving. It sanctifies the whole life, and extends its influence over others. Those who love God cannot harbor hatred or envy. When the heavenly principle of eternal love fills the heart, it will flow out to others, not merely because favors are received of them, but because love is the principle of action, and modifies the character, governs the impulses, controls the passions, subdues enmity, and elevates the affections. This love is not contracted, so as merely to include "me and mine," but is as broad as the world and as high as heaven. It is in harmony with that of the angel workers. This love, cherished in the soul, sweetens the entire life, and sheds a refining influence on all around. Possessing it, we cannot but be happy, let fortune smile or frown. And if we love God with all the heart, we must love his children also. This love is the Spirit of God. It is the heavenly adorning that gives true nobility and dignity to the soul, and assimilates our life to that of the Master. {YI, December 23, 1897 par. 3}

This love is the life of God, working with transforming power in the soul, perfecting Christian character, making human beings partakers of the divine nature. Through Christ this living stream of love and life flows to the world. . . . {UL 129.4}

Religion in the heart, planted there by the Spirit of God produces beauty in the character. It is not as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal. The Spirit of truth, the righteousness of Christ, produces beauty in the soul. It is that inward adorning of great price. The Spirit of holiness if received from God into the inner sanctuary of the soul, will, if it pervades the soul-temple, work outward, moulding and fashioning the character after the divine similitude. The Spirit, the life from Jesus Christ, flows from the soul. It is represented as a well of water, springing up unto everlasting life. {GH, August 1, 1906 par. 1}

The indwelling of the Spirit will be shown by the out-flowing of heavenly love. The divine fullness will flow through the consecrated human agent, to be given forth to others. {2MCP 733.4}

A true, noble life is characterized by thoughtful attention to the needs of others. The love of Christ in the soul is a constant wellspring of joy, ever flowing forth to others. {10MR 55.6}

Only the love that flows from the heart of Christ can heal. Only he in whom that love flows, even as the sap in the tree or as the blood in the body, can restore the wounded soul. {Ed 114 (1903)}

As the plan of redemption begins and ends with a gift, so it is to be carried forward. The same spirit of sacrifice which purchased salvation for us will dwell in the hearts of all who become partakers of the heavenly gift. Says the apostle Peter: "As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10). Said Jesus to His disciples as He sent them forth, "Freely ye have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:8). In him who is fully in sympathy with Christ, there can be nothing selfish or exclusive. He who drinks of the living water will find that it is "in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." The Spirit of Christ within him is like a spring welling up in the desert, flowing to refresh all, and making those who are ready to perish eager to drink of the water of life. {YRP 19.1}

"All ye are brethren" (Matthew 23:8). "Ye are not your own, ye are bought with a price" (1 Cor 6: 19, 20). Our owner is God. The same blood that purchased one brother, purchased the next also, and the next. All are born of God by the same Spirit. All are members of the same body, and are worked by the same Spirit. All feed on the flesh and blood of the Son of God, the Word, which is Spirit and life. The sustenance of all comes from the same source. We must not think it a virtue to differ. We are in close bonds of relationship one with another. If the same vitalizing current is flowing through our minds and hearts, we shall act in harmony. In failing to do this, we deny the Source of all spiritual life. {8MR 69.1}

True sanctification unites believers to Christ and to one another in the bonds of tender sympathy. This union causes to flow continually into the heart rich currents of Christlike love, which flows forth again in love for one another. {TDG 272.4}

We can be happy when we see God in everything. When we can see him in affliction, we have comfort and solace in our sorrow. When the sunshine of prosperity smiles, we recognize that the blessing flows from the fountain of life, and when trial and affliction are ours, we realize that the hand of the Lord is in all our perplexities, and thus we come to understand that sunshine and shadow are needful to perfect the character of the believer, and give him the true joy of perfect trust in God; for through faith he looks beyond the things that are seen to the things that are unseen. He says, "Now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." {ST, August 21, 1893 par. 5}

Though invisible to mortal sight, Christ still lives as the Redeemer of the world, the representative of man in the heavenly courts, and the medium through whom all blessings flow to the fallen race. His love is without a parallel. We cannot estimate the value of his life of toil and sacrifice, the precious ransom paid for our redemption. Surely it is not too much to ask the heart's best and holiest affections in return for such wondrous love..... Every branch united to the true vine brings forth fruit, not of its own kind, but that of the vine of which it has become a part. The Spirit of Christ flowing into the hearts of all who are truly united with him, makes them partakers of the divine nature. They will walk in the footsteps of their self-sacrificing, self-denying Redeemer. His purity and love will appear in their characters and their daily lives, while meekness and truth will guide their way. {ST, March 10, 1887}

God has committed to us a special work, a work that no other people can do. He has promised us the aid of His Holy Spirit. The heavenly current is flowing earthward for the accomplishment of the very work appointed us. Let not this heavenly current be turned aside by our deviations from the straightforward path marked out by Christ. {6T 244.2}

The youthful teacher who fears God will be instructed while instructing. And as thoughts of real value flash into his mind, let him offer thanksgiving to God, praising Him as the One from whom all blessings flow, recognizing and acknowledging Him as the source of all true, noble thoughts... {SpM 197.6}

The minister who has learned of Christ will ever be conscious that he is a messenger of God, commissioned by him to do a work both for time and eternity. It should not be any part of his object to call attention to himself, his learning, or his ability. But his whole aim should be to bring sinners to repentance, pointing them, both by precept and example, to the Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. Self should be hidden in Jesus. Such men will speak as those conscious of possessing power and authority from God, being a mouth-piece for him. Their discourses will have an earnestness and fervor of persuasion that will lead sinners to see their lost condition, and take refuge in Christ. Such ministers will partake of the sympathy and love flowing from Jesus, the great fountainhead, and souls will be touched by their words, prejudice will melt away, and sinners will be converted. {RH, August 8, 1878 par. 7}

The evidence of true value and worth in men who are in responsible positions, is the fact that they have a daily Christian experience in the things of God. They find music in the words spoken by Christ, "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning" If men will receive the ministration of the Holy Spirit,-- the richest gift God can bestow,-- they will impart blessings to all who are connected with them. But God cannot reveal himself through some who are entrusted with responsibilities. He cannot make them channels through which his grace and compassion and love can flow; for they insult his goodness by exhibiting a masterful spirit toward those whom they regard as being in error and needing reproof, eclipsing Christ's love and mercy by their own unsanctified passions. The enemy of all good is allowed to rule in their hearts, and their lives will reveal his attributes. They claim that the word of God directs them, but by their actions they say, "We want not thy way, but our way." {SpTA06 34.1}

Jesus says, "Love one another, as I have loved you." Love is not simply an impulse, a transitory emotion, dependent upon circumstances; it is a living principle, a permanent power. The soul is fed by the streams of pure love that flow from the heart of Christ, as a well-spring that never fails. O, how is the heart quickened, how are its motives ennobled, its affections deepened, by this communion! Under the education and discipline of the Holy Spirit, the children of God love one another, truly, sincerely, unaffectedly--"without partiality, and without hypocrisy." And this because the heart is in love with Jesus. Our affection for one another springs from our common relation to God. We are one family, we love one another as He loved us. {5BC 1140.3}

Now, just now, is our day of mercy and salvation. The Lord God, who dwelleth in the holy place, sees every soul that shows contempt for the manifestations of his Holy Spirit. God has revealed himself again and again in a most marked manner in Battle Creek. He has given a large measure of his Holy Spirit to the believers there. It has come unexpectedly at times, and there have been deep movings upon hearts and minds; a letting go of selfish purposes, and a bringing into the treasury many things that you were convicted God had forbidden you to have. This blessing extended to large numbers; but why was not this sweet, holy working continued upon hearts and minds? Some felt annoyed at this outpouring, and their own natural dispositions were manifested. They said, "This is only excitement; it is not the Holy Spirit, not showers of the latter rain from heaven." There were hearts full of unbelief, who did not drink in of the Spirit, but who had bitterness in their souls. On many occasions the Holy Spirit did work; but those who resisted the Spirit of God at Minneapolis were waiting for a chance to travel over the same ground again, because their spirit was the same. Afterward, when they had evidence heaped upon evidence, some were convicted; but those who were not softened and subdued by the Holy Spirit's working, put their own interpretation upon every manifestation of the grace of God, and they have lost much. They declared in their heart and soul and words that this manifestation of the Holy Spirit was fanaticism and delusion. They stood like a rock; the waves of mercy were flowing upon and around them, but were beaten back by their hard and wicked hearts, which resisted the Holy Spirit's working. Had this been received, it would have made them wise unto salvation,-- holier men, prepared to do the work of God with sanctified ability. But all the universe of heaven witnessed the disgraceful treatment of Jesus Christ, represented by the Holy Spirit. Had Christ been before them, they would have treated him in a manner similar to that in which the Jews treated Christ. {SpTA06 19.2}

There are causes for the present coldness and unbelief. The love of the world and the cares of life separate the soul from God. The water of life must be in us, and flowing out from us, springing up into everlasting life. We must work out what God works in. If the Christian would enjoy the light of life, he must increase his efforts to bring others to the knowledge of the truth. His life must be characterized by exertion and sacrifices to do others good; and then there will be no complaints of lack of enjoyment. {3T 381.2}

Let envy and jealousy be quenched in the flow of love from the fountain of God's love. The cry of them that are ready to perish finds swift entrance into His ear. "He shall deliver the needy when he crieth, the poor also and him that hath no helper" {Manuscript 129, 1901}

God's workers today constitute the connecting link between the former workers, the church of history, and the church that is to be called out from the world and prepared to meet their Lord. The tide of spiritual life is to flow through the appointed channels, as in the history of the past. From age to age the light which God has for the world has been imparted to the church militant, and God is continuing to impart precious light. All who receive light are to diffuse it to those who sit in darkness. All the excellencies that have come through the belief of the truth from past ages to the present time, are to be treated with the utmost respect. Let not the truth entrusted to our keeping lose its force and power through our careless misuse of body or mind. {SpTA07 11.1}

We are to be consecrated channels through which the love of Christ flows to those who need help. Every true worker is connected with heavenly instrumentalities. All such are workers together with those who are "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation." God sends his light to those who keep the windows of the soul open heavenward. Under the Holy Spirit's influence, they work the works of God. He who approaches nearest to obedience to the divine law will be of the most service to God. He who follows Christ, reaching out after his goodness, his compassion, his love for the human family, will be accepted by God as a worker together with him. Such a one will not be content to remain on a low level of spirituality. He will constantly reach higher and higher. {RH, May 13, 1909 par. 6}

Satan will be constantly seeking to belittle our conception or our privileges and responsibilities. He would have us regard the work of Christ as a commonplace work, and do it listlessly and negligently. He would keep us indifferent to the exalted and sacred positions to be attained in Christian life and character; but we must bruise him under our feet. We must establish an unyielding enmity between our souls and our foe; but we must open our hearts to the power and influence of the Holy Spirit. We want Satan's darkness to be shut out, and the light of Heaven to flow in. We want to become so sensitive to holy influences, that the lightest whisper of Jesus will move our souls, till he is in us, and we in him, living by the faith of the Son of God. {ST, March 23, 1888 par. 12}

But if those whom the Lord has made stewards, regard their treasures as his gifts, and seek to manifest compassion, sympathy, and love for their fellow men, they are in harmony with the character of God, who gave his only begotten Son to die for their salvation. If they value the souls of the human race according to the price paid for their redemption, they will not work out their natural impulses, but will manifest the attributes of the mind and will of God, and will be channels through which God's generous, loving sentiments may flow to humanity. {SpTA06 35.2}

Wherever there is life in the subjects of God's kingdom, there will be increase and growth; there is a constant interchange, taking and giving out, receiving and returning to the Lord his own. God works with every true believer, and the light and blessing received is given out again in the work which the believer does. As he thus gives of that which he has received, his capacity for receiving is increased. As he imparts of the heavenly gifts, he makes room for fresh currents of grace and truth to flow into the soul from the living fountain. Greater light, increased knowledge and blessing, are his. In this work, which devolves upon every church member, is the life and growth of the church. He whose life consists in ever receiving and never giving, soon loses the blessing. If truth does not flow forth from him to others, he loses his capacity to receive. We must impart the goods of heaven if we would have fresh blessings. {PH004 4.4}

As laborers for the salvation of souls, ask wisdom from God, believing that He will bestow the gift you ask. Receive the precious endowment by faith, nothing doubting. As we seek God in sincerity, believing His Word, acknowledging His goodness, His mercy, and His love toward ourselves, there flows forth from us the living water to refresh and revive the spirit of the humble and the contrite. The souls that are seeking for truth need to have words spoken to them in season, for Satan is speaking to them by his temptations. If you meet with repulse when trying to help souls, heed it not. Speak to those who will listen. Impart the knowledge of the truth you have obtained; but let it be the truth as it is in Jesus. Work while it is day, for "the night cometh, when no man can work." Sow the seed in faith, and with an unsparing hand. Work as if you could behold the universe of heaven looking upon you. One soul saved is worth more than the whole world. All who are willing to examine and understand the truth, will find the precious, priceless, hidden treasure. {ST, April 5, 1899 par. 5}

What is impossible for the human agent to do, God will do through you. Begin then, and advance. Do the work, believing that it is the right thing to do, and expecting the Lord to help you and your wife, and lead you in clear lines, working in and through you. As the Lord's mind becomes your mind, a divine tenderness will take possession of your soul. The channel that has been choked with misunderstandings will be cleared, the debris will be swept away by the current of Christ's love. The love of Christ will flow out to your brethren, and through them to others. Be pitiful to those whom you regard as weak and erring. In your work manifest the compassion of Christ. See how often His love broke forth in expression of sympathy for the unshepherded flock, the hungry multitudes. {8MR 70.2}

It is the golden oil that the heavenly messengers empty into the golden tubes, to be conducted into the golden bowl, that creates a continuous, bright and shining light. It is the love of God continually transferred to the human agent that keeps him a bright and shining light for God. Then he can communicate light and truth to all who are in darkness and error and sin. The golden oil is not manufactured by any human skill. It is the unseen power of the holy messengers who wait before the throne of God to communicate to everyone who is in darkness that they may diffuse heaven's light. Into the hearts of those united to God by faith, His golden oil of love flows freely. {TDG 98.4}

The golden oil is not manufactured by any human skill. It is the unseen power of the heavenly messengers who wait before the throne of God to communicate to all who are in darkness, that they may diffuse heaven's light. Into the hearts of those united to God by faith, his golden oil of love flows freely, to flow forth again in good works, in real, heartfelt service for God. These souls become a blessing to their fellow men, and thus are enabled to shine. {RH, September 21, 1897 par. 6}

The glories of the unseen world attract my soul. The life hid in Christ, the privilege of being one with him as he is one with the Father, of being loved, if obedient, as God loves his Son,--all these claim the entire service of my life and affection. "Praise God, from whom all blessings flow." Talk not to me of your blessings outside of Christ. They are empty, worthless. {ST, April 8, 1889 par. 6}

In that day the redeemed will shine forth in the glory of the Father and His Son. The angels of heaven, touching their golden harps, will welcome the King, and those who are the trophies of His victory--those who have been washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb. A song of triumph will peal forth, filling all heaven. Christ has conquered. He enters the heavenly courts accompanied by His redeemed ones, the witnesses that His mission of suffering and sacrifice has not been in vain. Far above the city, upon a foundation of burnished gold, is a throne, high and lifted up. Upon this throne sits the Son of God, and around Him are the subjects of His kingdom. The power and majesty of Christ no language can describe, no pen portray. The glory of the Eternal Father is enshrouding His Son. The brightness of His presence fills the city of God and flows out beyond the gates, flooding the whole earth with its radiance. Nearest the throne are those who were once zealous in the cause of Satan, but who, plucked as brands from the burning, have followed their Saviour with deep, intense devotion. Next are those who perfected Christian characters in the midst of falsehood and infidelity, those who honored the law of God when the Christian world declared it void, and the millions of all ages who were martyred for their faith. And beyond is the "great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, . . . before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands." Their warfare is ended, their victory won. They have run the race and reached the prize. . . . In the presence of the assembled inhabitants of earth and heaven the final coronation of the Son of God takes place. {ML 346.5}

"I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away." Revelation 21:1. The fire that consumes the wicked purifies the earth. Every trace of the curse is swept away. . . .One reminder alone remains: Our Redeemer will ever bear the marks of His crucifixion. Upon His wounded head, upon His side, His hands and feet, are the only traces of the cruel work that sin has wrought. Says the prophet, beholding Christ in His glory: "He had bright beams coming out of his side: and there was the hiding of his power." Habakkuk 3:4, margin. That pierced side whence flowed the crimson stream that reconciled man to God--there is the Saviour's glory, there "the hiding of his power." . . . And the tokens of His humiliation are His highest honor; through the eternal ages the wounds of Calvary will show forth His praise and declare His power. {Mar 362.2}

And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of his character. As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption, and the amazing achievements in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell the mighty chorus of praise. "And every creature which is in Heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb forever and ever." [REV. 5:13.] The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love. {GC88 678.3}

"Heavenly Father, we bow before Thee. Lord, we have heard Thy word. We submit all to Thee. O Lord, Thou hast called me by name, and hast told my failings and my sore need. Lord, I confess it all to Thee. "O God, I thank Thee for Thy gracious word, Thy blessed, Thy special promise, that I, Lord, shall be converted unto Thee. And so, Lord, I put myself into Thy hands this moment, to be converted, to be molded and fashioned according to Thine own mind and by Thy Holy Spirit. O Lord, I pray that Thy divine wish may be met, and that I shall ever be a channel for the flowing of that holy oil which Thou hast mentioned, and which Thou dost long to pour upon bereaved and sore and mourning hearts. And Lord, I pray Thee that Thou wilt now convert me through and through. Make me, Lord altogether like Jesus, only like Jesus, that I shall be kind and courteous, gentle and careful, toward all my brethren and all to whom Thou dost send me. "O Lord, Thou knowest all about it. I need not tell Thee anything. But Lord, I will confess all thou hast spoken. Take me, O Lord; Thou hast bought me; I am Thine. So I give myself to Thee, Lord, this morning, body, soul, and spirit to be devoted to Thee, to be consecrated to Thee, to be purified by Thee, to be cleansed by Thee, to be molded and shaped by Thee, conformed to the image of Thy dear Son, that I may walk worthy of Thee, dear Lord, and glorify Thee on earth, and finish the work which Thou hast given me to do. "Lord, I pray Thee that the hearts of my brethren may not be pained any more by anything that I may do or say, but that they may be bound to Thee, Lord, and helped on the way." And so, now, Lord, we have committed all to Thee. We thank Thee that Thou dost accept every one; and so, Lord, use us. Make us one, we pray Thee, O Lord, to help to make us one. Whomsoever Thou shalt choose as the band of men that shall go with me, make our hearts ones, our minds one, that we shall be workers together to unify the great work which Thou hast committed to us, to make Thy work prosperous, and carry it nobly and strongly. "And so, Lord, I pray for this. I know, Lord, that Thou hast heard the prayer; and so answer, we pray Thee, in the multitude of Thy mercies, Lord, answer, that.....Thou mayest be glorified. "Lord, I thank Thee for Thy Word; for Thy Spirit; for Thy promise. In Jesus' name. Amen." {KC 39.5}

PRAISE GOD, FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW!

The following compilation of passages and quotes from the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy are arranged in sequence according to the plan of salvation. Only did I highlight in blue print words that stood out to me as the quotes were arranged. As you read through the paper, you will see a beautiful harmony in the writings of Mrs. White concerning the:

BREATH OF GOD THE BREATH OF LIFE

"That which shares the life of God, With Him surviveth all." {MB 150}

God is the source of life and light and joy to the universe. Like rays of light from the sun, like the streams of water bursting from a living spring, blessings flow out from Him to all His creatures. And wherever the life of God is in the hearts of men, it will flow out to others in love and blessing. {SC 77.1}

From eternal ages it was God's purpose that every created being, from the bright and holy seraph to man, should be a temple for the indwelling of the Creator.-- All created beings live by the will and power of God. They are dependent recipients of the life of God. From the highest seraph to the humblest animate being, all are replenished from the Source of life. {DA 785}

Our Father in heaven is constantly engaged in upholding the things which He has created. Every leaf grows, every flower blooms, every fruit develops, by the power of God. In Him "we live, and move, and have our being." Each heart-beat, each breath, is the inspiration of Him who breathed into the nostrils of Adam the breath of life,--the inspiration of the ever-present God, the great I AM. The great and infinite God lives not unto Himself, but for the benefit and blessing of every being and every object of His creation. {AUCR, June 1, 1900 par. 16}

The same power that upholds nature is working also in man. The same great laws that guide alike the star and the atom control human life. The laws that govern the heart's action, regulating the flow of the current of life to the body, are the laws of the mighty Intelligence that has the jurisdiction of the soul. From Him all life proceeds. Only in harmony with Him can be found its true sphere of action. For all the objects of His creation the condition is the same--a life sustained by receiving the life of God, a life exercised in harmony with the Creator's will. To transgress His law, physical, mental, or moral, is to place one's self out of harmony with the universe, to introduce discord, anarchy, ruin. {RC 136.3}

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Genesis 2:7

The Lord created man out of the dust of the earth. He made Adam a partaker of His life, His nature. There was breathed into him the breath of the Almighty, and he became a living soul. Adam was perfect in form--strong, comely, pure, bearing the image of his Maker. {10MR 326.4}

The very dust of the ground from which man was formed was pure, and the breath of life which God breathed into his nostrils was holy. He was placed in Eden, the garden of God, and its atmosphere was undefiled, and from the beams of the sun in the heavens which blessed and cheered the earth, to the fountains and streams that watered the garden, all was holy, all was clothed with spotless purity and unexcelled loveliness, and was in harmony with the character of the Father and the Son, by whom the worlds were made, and in whom was life, and the life is the light of men. {ST, December 12, 1895 par. 6}

When God had made man in His image, the human form was perfect in all its arrangements, but it was without life. Then a personal, self-existing God breathed into that form the breath of life, and man became a living, breathing, intelligent being. All parts of the human organism were put in action. The heart, the arteries, the veins, the tongue, the hands, the feet, the senses, the perceptions of the mind--all began their work, and all were placed under law. Man became a living soul. Through Jesus Christ a personal God created man and endowed him with intelligence and power. {8T 264.1}

The physical organism of man is under the supervision of God; but it is not like a clock, which is set in operation, and must go of itself. The heart beats, pulse succeeds pulse, breath succeeds breath, but the entire being is under the supervision of God. "Ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building (1 Cor. 3:9). In God we live and move and have our being. Each heartbeat, each breath, is the inspiration of Him who breathed into the nostrils of Adam the breath of life--the inspiration of the ever-present God, the great I AM. {1SM 294.3}

Adam was a created being, dependent upon the tree of life for his existence. Through his disobedience, he forfeited the precious privilege of eating of this tree, which was to perpetuate the life breathed into him by God, and for which he was dependent on God. After disobeying God, the precious gifts and endowments which he derived from God were no more his. Adam's disobedience to God's commands brought the human family under the death penalty. "In Adam all die," and eternal death, not eternal life, is the final punishment of all who continue in transgression. {ST, June 17, 1897 par. 4}

God is the fountain of life; and when one chooses the service of sin, he separates from God, and thus cuts himself off from life. He is "alienated from the life of God." Christ says, "All they that hate Me love death." Eph. 4:18; Prov. 8:36. God gives them existence for a time that they may develop their character and reveal their principles. This accomplished, they receive the results of their own choice. By a life of rebellion, Satan and all who unite with him place themselves so out of harmony with God that His very presence is to them a consuming fire. The glory of Him who is love will destroy them. {DA 764.1}

Man fell through disobedience, severing his life from the life of God. Christ stooped to take humanity, that through him man might gain eternal life. In the guise of humanity, Christ defeated the purpose of the enemy. But Satan has interposed between the sinful human being and the living source of power, so that it is impossible for man, of himself, to appropriate the circulating element of the divine nature. Unless man has a vital connection with God, he will pervert every blessing he receives, and employ every gracious gift as a weapon against the bountiful bestower. It is only as human beings receive Christ, that God can bless them. Thus only can they be elevated and placed on vantage-ground.

Christ stands at the head of humanity as its substitute and surety, to represent God to man, and, through his power, to cause a stream of spiritual life to flow earthward. The Sun of Righteousness, he desires to shine into the chambers of the mind, purifying and elevating the soul, that he may abide therein, and control the affections and emotions, bringing the entire being into conformity to his will.

When the human being receives daily spiritual food from God, a blessed union is formed between earthly and heavenly intelligences. The believer is sustained by the life of Christ. Continually he receives blessings from the hand of God, and continually he imparts. "God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, . . . and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus." {YI, July 13, 1899 par. 6,7,8}

Christ alone was able to represent the Deity. He who had been in the presence of the Father from the beginning, He who was the express image of the invisible God, was alone sufficient to accomplish this work. No verbal description could reveal God to the world. Through a life of purity, a life of perfect trust and submission to the will of God, a life of humiliation such as even the highest seraph in heaven would have shrunk from, God Himself must be revealed to humanity. In order to do this, our Saviour clothed His divinity with humanity. He employed the human faculties, for only by adopting these could He be comprehended by humanity. Only humanity could reach humanity. He lived out the character of God through the human body which God had prepared for Him. He blessed the world by living out in human flesh the life of God, thus showing that He had the power to unite humanity to divinity {RH June 25, 1895}

Man broke God's law, and through the Redeemer new and fresh promises were made on a different basis. All blessings must come through a Mediator. Now every member of the human family is given wholly into the hands of Christ, and whatever we possess--whether it is the gift of money, of houses, of lands, of reasoning powers, of physical strength, of intellectual talents--in this present life, and the blessings of the future life, are placed in our possession as God's treasures to be faithfully expended for the benefit of man. Every gift is stamped with the cross and bears the image and superscription of Jesus Christ. All things come of God. From the smallest benefits up to the largest blessing, all flow through the one Channel--a superhuman mediation sprinkled with the blood that is of value beyond estimate because it was the life of God in His Son. {FW 22.1}

"I am the true Vine," He says. Instead of choosing the graceful palm, the lofty cedar, or the strong oak, Jesus takes the vine with its clinging tendrils to represent Himself. The palm tree, the cedar, and the oak stand alone. They require no support. But the vine entwines about the trellis, and thus climbs heavenward. So Christ in His humanity was dependent upon divine power. "I can of Mine own self do nothing," He declared. John 5:30.

"I am the true Vine." The Jews had always regarded the vine as the most noble of plants, and a type of all that was powerful, excellent, and fruitful. Israel had been represented as a vine which God had planted in the Promised Land. The Jews based their hope of salvation on the fact of their connection with Israel. But Jesus says, I am the real Vine. Think not that through a connection with Israel you may become partakers of the life of God, and inheritors of His promise. Through Me alone is spiritual life received. {DA 674.3,675.1}

When the gospel is received in its purity and power, it is a cure for the maladies that originated in sin. The Sun of righteousness arises "with healing in His wings" (Malachi 4:2). Not all that this world bestows can heal a broken heart, or impart peace of mind, or remove care, or banish disease. Fame, genius, talent--all are powerless to gladden the sorrowful heart or to restore the wasted life. The life of God in the soul is man's only hope. {MH 115, 1905}

Not all the wisdom and skill of man can produce life in the smallest object in nature. It is only through the life which God Himself has imparted, that either plant or animal can live. So it is only through the life from God that spiritual life is begotten in the hearts of men. Unless a man is "born from above," he cannot become a partaker of the life which Christ came to give. John 3:3, margin. {SC 67.2}

Righteousness is holiness, likeness to God, and "God is love." 1 John 4:16. It is conformity to the law of God, for "all Thy commandments are righteousness" (Psalm 119:172), and "love is the fulfilling of the law" (Romans 13:10). Righteousness is love, and love is the light and the life of God. The righteousness of God is embodied in Christ. We receive righteousness by receiving Him. {MB 18.1}

Heaven's plan of salvation is broad enough to embrace the whole world. God longs to breathe into prostrate humanity the breath of life. And he will not permit any soul to be disappointed who is sincere in his longing for something higher and nobler than anything the world can offer. Constantly he is sending his angels to those who, while surrounded by circumstances the most discouraging, pray in faith for some power higher than themselves to take possession of them, and bring deliverance and peace. In various ways God will reveal himself to them, and will place them in touch with providences that will establish their confidence in the One who has given himself a ransom for all, "that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments." Ps. 78:7. {RH, June 24, 1915 par. 19}

In the plan of God, all the riches of heaven are to be drawn upon by men. Nothing in the treasury of divine resources is deemed too costly to accompany the great gift of the only begotten Son of God. "As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." Christ was empowered to breathe into fallen humanity the breath of life. Those who receive him will never hunger, never thirst; for greater joy than that found in Christ there can not be. {GCB, April 1, 1899 par. 4}

God has sent His Son to communicate His own life to humanity. Christ declares, 'I live by the Father,' My life and His being one. No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him. 'For as the Father hath life in Himself, so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself; and hath given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man.' The head of every man is Christ, as the head of Christ is God. 'And ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's.' {LUH, December 2, 1908}

Christ came to communicate the life of God to humanity. He declared, "I live by the Father," my life and his being one... {ST, July 15, 1897 par. 2}

At his first advent, Christ came to the world as its Redeemer. He came to plant truth in the hearts of all who would give place to it, who would receive it and be converted. He came to take away the sin of the world, and to fill every heart with pure, healthful joy. He longed to breathe into prostrate humanity the breath of life. {RH, September 20, 1898 par. 3}

Having brought into the world the great treasures of heaven, owned and created by the eternal God, Christ can give to all eternal life. With His humanity He touches humanity, and with His divinity He firmly grasps divinity. Into man, prostrated, diseased, enfeebled, He can breathe the breath of life, making him a partaker of the divine nature. {ST, October 10, 1900 par. 14}

In Christ the cry of humanity reached the Father of infinite pity. As a man He supplicated the throne of God till His humanity was charged with a heavenly current that should connect humanity with divinity. Through continual communion He received life from God, that He might impart life to the world. His experience is to be ours.” {DA 363, 1898}

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: John 20:21,22

Jesus is waiting to breathe upon all his disciples, and give them the inspiration of his sanctifying spirit, and transfuse the vital influence from himself to his people. He would have them understand that henceforth they cannot serve two masters. Their lives cannot be divided. Christ is to live in his human agents, and work through their faculties, and act through their capabilities. Their will must be submitted to his will, they must act with his spirit, that it may be no more they that live, but Christ that liveth in them. Jesus is seeking to impress upon them the thought that in giving his Holy Spirit he is giving to them the glory which the Father has given him, that he and his people may be one in God. {ST, October 3, 1892}

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. John 13:20

In giving us His Spirit, God gives us Himself, making Himself a fountain of divine influences, to give health and life to the world. {7T 273}

The impartation of the Spirit was the impartation of the very life of Christ, which was to qualify the disciples for their mission. Without this qualification their work could not be accomplished. Thus they were to fulfil the official duties connected with the church. But the Holy Spirit was not yet fully manifested, because Christ had not yet been glorified. The more abundant impartation of the Holy Spirit did not take place till after Christ's ascension. {RH, June 13, 1899 par. 6,7}

So it may be now. Instead of man's speculations, let the Word of God be preached. Let Christians put away their dissensions, and give themselves to God for the saving of the lost. Let them in faith ask for the blessing, and it will come. The outpouring of the Spirit in apostolic days was the "former rain," and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant.

All who consecrate soul, body, and spirit to God, will be constantly receiving a new endowment of physical and mental power. The inexhaustible supplies of heaven are at their command. Christ gives them the breath of his own spirit, the life of his own life. The Holy Spirit puts forth its highest energies to work in heart and mind. The grace of God enlarges and multiplies their faculties, and every perfection of the divine nature comes to their assistance in the work of saving souls. Through co-operation with Christ they are complete in him, and in their human weakness they are enabled to do the deeds of Omnipotence. {RH, November 19, 1908 par. 14,15}

I saw a throne, and on it sat the Father and the Son. I gazed on Jesus' countenance and admired His lovely person. The Father's person I could not behold, for a cloud of glorious light covered Him. I asked Jesus if His Father had a form like Himself. He said He had, but I could not behold it ...Those who were bowed before the throne would offer up their prayers and look to Jesus; then He would look to His Father, and appear to be pleading with Him. A light would come from the Father to the Son and from the Son to the praying company. Then I saw an exceeding bright light come from the Father to the Son, and from the Son it waved over the people before the throne ... This company all received the light and rejoiced in it, and their countenances shone with its glory ...Those who rose up with Jesus would send up their faith to Him in the holiest, and pray, "My Father, give us Thy Spirit." Then Jesus would breathe upon them the Holy Ghost. In that breath was light, power, and much love, joy, and peace. {EW 54,55}

Every faculty that we possess has been provided for us in Christ; for when God gave his Son to our world, he included all heaven in his gift. And God would have men value their powers as a sacred gift from him. A spark of God's own life has been breathed into the human body, making man a living soul, the possessor of moral endowments, and a will to direct his own course of action. He has the privilege of becoming a partaker of the divine nature. This will give him power to conquer evil, and love and choose that which is good. He has a conscience, which, under the control of God, will approve the right and condemn the wrong. And he may, if he will, have fellowship with God. He may walk and talk with God as did Enoch. This holy companionship is denied to none who will believe on Christ as their personal Saviour. {ST, August 26, 1897 par. 8}

We are to commune with the One who gives us life, the One who keeps the heart in motion and the pulse beating. To every member of his great family here below God is ever giving the breath of life. And he has given his Son as a propitiation for sin, in order that we might stand on vantage-ground with God. He deserves our sincere reverence, our earnest devotion. When we consider what he had done for us, how can we help loving him? {RH, February 15, 1912 par. 14}

It is a heart-reception of the pure principles of the gospel that makes a man an honor to God, and enables him to exert an influence that wins souls to Christ. "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts." Only thus can human beings prevail against Satanic agencies. Without God's aid, human might and strength have no more power than the wind that blows to impress aright the souls of men. The breath of God must be breathed into the soul before it can be filled with power. {Central Advance, April 8, 1903 par. 4}

It is not the human agent that is to inspire with life. The Lord God of Israel will do that part, quickening the lifeless spiritual nature into activity. The breath of the Lord of hosts must enter into the lifeless bodies. In the judgment, when all secrets are laid bare, it will be known that the voice of God spoke through the human agent, and aroused the torpid conscience, and stirred the lifeless faculties, and moved sinners to repentance and contrition, and forsaking of sins. It will then be clearly seen that through the human agent faith in Jesus Christ was imparted to the soul, and spiritual life from heaven was breathed upon one who was dead in trespasses and sins, and he was quickened with spiritual life. {RH, January 17, 1893 par. 7}

Religion is not a mere form. Pure and undefiled religion is the life of God in the soul, the abiding of Jesus in the heart. The thoughts are cultivated and trained to think and act in reference to the glory of God. The questions will arise in the mind, Will this course of action please Jesus? Shall I be able to maintain my integrity if I enter into this arrangement? Thus God will be made the counselor, and the soul will be brought into obedience to the will of God, and we shall be led into safe paths; and if we follow on to know the Lord, we shall triumph with the truth and have eternal life. {RH, July 19, 1887 par. 23}

God's people would put on joy and gladness as a garment if they would only receive what he is waiting to give them,--that which would make them strong to help those in need of help. Our people need the breath of life breathed into them, that they may arouse to spiritual action. Many have lost their vital energy; they are sluggish, dead, as it were. Let those who have been receiving the grace of Christ help these souls to arouse to action. Let us keep in the current of life that comes from Christ, that we may kindle life in some other soul. Healthy, happy, united action is what is needed in the church today. {RH, April 28, 1904 par. 17}

The opening of God's word is followed by remarkable opening in strengthening man's faculties; for the entrance of God's word is the application of divine truth to the heart, purifying and refining the soul through the agency of the Holy Spirit. He has genuine faith in the truth as it is in Jesus, and that faith works by love and purifies the soul. These are tried workers together with God, and God is to receive all the glory. Whatever progress we make, whatever good we accomplish comes from God, to be reflected upon others in good works, and reflected back to God, the great Source of light. It is the Spirit of God in the soul that quickens its otherwise lifeless faculties, and attracts the soul to God and to the truth. The intellectual talents owe all their advancement to God, and our religious life is dead and spiritless, unless the living Spirit is received from God the life-giving power. Without the enlightenment of his Spirit, we cannot appreciate the things of the heavenly world, and cannot have a relish for communion with God. {RH, July 19, 1887 par. 22}

Christ says that if He is in us our joy will be full. Let us, then, be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Let us not, by living inconsistent, earthly, sensual lives, heap reproach upon Christ. Let us rise above the malarious atmosphere that pervades the world, and breathe the breath of God. Let us feed upon the bread of life.

Christ declares that if we eat His flesh and drink His blood, we shall have eternal life. His Word will be to us as the leaves of the tree of life if we will believe in Christ as our personal Saviour. If we eat the bread that came down from heaven, we shall have a life connection with God... {2SAT 168.1,2}

None who breathe the breath of God, receiving the Holy Spirit from him, can be indifferent in regard to the welfare of others. Their own souls are inspired with the love of Christ, and they use all their powers in the work of presenting Bible principles. {RH, July 19, 1898 par. 22}

The more unselfish his spirit, the happier he is, because he is fulfilling God's purpose for him. The breath of God is breathed through him, filling him with gladness. To him life is a sacred trust, precious in his sight because given by God to be spent in ministering to others. {RH, June 25, 1908}

God is your Master, and you are his employed servants. The Holy Spirit must come in contact with your spirit, that it may divinely restore your soul, working your sanctification, and giving life and power to your efforts. When the life of God is restored to the soul, we rest in God, and are clothed with the righteousness of Christ. {RH, May 20, 1890 par. 2}

Jesus said, Be perfect as your Father is perfect. If you are the children of God you are partakers of His nature, and you cannot but be like Him. Every child lives by the life of his father. If you are God's children, begotten by His Spirit, you live by the life of God. In Christ dwells "all the fullness of the Godhead bodily" (Col. 2:9); and the life of Jesus is made manifest "in our mortal flesh" (2 Cor. 4:11). That life in you will produce the same character and manifest the same works as it did in Him. Thus you will be in harmony with every precept of His law; for "the law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul" (Ps. 19:7, margin). Through love "the righteousness of the law" will be "fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Rom. 8:4). {RC 73.5}

In giving us His Spirit, God gives us Himself, making Himself a fountain of divine influences, to give health and life to the world. {7T 273}

Shall we sleep on the very verge of the eternal world? Shall we be dull and cold and dead? Oh, that we might have in our churches the Spirit and breath of God breathed into His people, that they might stand upon their feet and live. We need to see that the way is narrow, and the gate strait. But as we pass through the strait gate, its wideness is without limit. {20MR 217.1}

Christian love will work the grandest of all miracles. Christ is the world's Redeemer, and men who do not have an experimental knowledge of what He is and what He will be to them, are in darkness. In our day it is a difficult matter to bring those who profess to believe the truth to the experimental knowledge of its vitalizing, sanctifying power. This has been experienced in years gone by, but form has taken the place of the power, and its simplicity has been lost in a round of ceremonies. There is need of the Spirit and life of God to be breathed into the dry bones. {20MR 243.2}

But not only does this simile of the dry bones apply to the world, but also to those who have been blessed with great light; for they also are like the skeletons of the valley. They have the form of men, the framework of the body; but they have not spiritual life. But the parable does not leave the dry bones merely knit together into the forms of men; for it is not enough that there is symmetry of limb and feature. The breath of life must vivify the bodies, that they may stand upright, and spring into activity. These bones represent the house of Israel, the church of God, and the hope of the church is the vivifying influence of the Holy Spirit. The Lord must breathe upon the dry bones, that they may live. {RH, January 17, 1893 par. 8}

The command of God is addressed to all the members of the church to use their powers in his service. Though the instrument may be weak, it is the power of God that will accomplish the work. Paul may plant, and Apollos may water, but it is God who gives the increase. There is a great work to do; and the Spirit of the living God must enter into the living messenger, that the truth may go with power. Without the Holy Spirit, without the breath of God, there is torpidity of conscience, loss of spiritual life. Unless there is genuine conversion of the soul to God; unless the vital breath of God quickens the soul to spiritual life; unless the professors of truth are actuated by heaven-born principles, they are not born of the incorruptible seed, which liveth and abideth forever. Unless they trust in the righteousness of Christ as their only security; unless they copy his character, labor in his spirit, they are naked; they have not on the robe of righteousness. {RH, December 3, 1908 par. 10}

When ministers, teachers, and managers breathe the breath of God, a high and holy consecration will be manifest.

Men have lost the life of God by opposing those who have received a message from heaven. God calls for workers who will wrestle earnestly for the prize of eternal life. The Spirit of God must come to every gospel worker, to every church member, if those who are perishing in sin are [to be] saved to Christ. The crown of life is gained by those who run with patience the race set before them.

Brethren, God forbid that you should lose this prize. God is not pleased with your inefficiency. You are doing nothing to gain a high, noble spirituality. The torpor of spiritual death has been long upon you. It is not your orthodox theories, not your membership in the church, not the diligent performance of a certain round of duties, that gives evidence of life. {17MR 247.3,4,5}

I saw that great changes must be wrought in the hearts and lives of these men before God can work in them by his power, in the salvation of others. They must be renewed after the image of God in righteousness and true holiness. The love of the world, the love of self, and every ambition of life calculated to exalt self, will be changed by the grace of God, and employed in the special work of saving souls for whom Christ died. Humility will take the place of pride; and haughty self-esteem will be exchanged for meekness. Every power of the heart will be turned into disinterested love for all mankind. Satan, I saw, would arouse himself when they in earnest commence the work of reformation in themselves. He knows that these men, if consecrated to God, could prove the strength of his promises, and realize a power working with them that the adversary shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. They would realize the life of God in the soul. {PH011 72.1}

When the lips of a speaker move under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the words of God find utterance in warnings, in reproofs, in appeals. This power is not of the speaker. It is a power given him by God, that he may reach those who are dead in trespasses and sins, and arouse them to see the need of receiving life from God. God works through His faithful servants, who do not shun to declare the whole truth in the power of the Spirit. Their work bears His endorsement. {6MR 57.2}

Let every one who values the precious sacrifice made by Jesus Christ, lift up his voice in prayer to God, and exclaim: "Behold, O Lord, this poor, oppressed people that have been despised and maltreated by the white nation. Breathe into their souls the breath of spiritual life. If no effort is made on their behalf, they will perish in their sins, and their blood will be found upon our garments. Father of mercies, pity thine offspring. Breathe upon these beaten, bruised, ignorant souls, that they may live. Give thy Holy Spirit to those who shall go forth as messengers to this people. Take not thy Holy Spirit from us in our councils, and enable us to make plans and devise means for the spread of the truth among them." {RH, January 21, 1896 par. 5}

Our personal identity is preserved in the resurrection, though not the same particles of matter or material substance as went into the grave. The wondrous works of God are a mystery to man. The spirit, the character of man, is returned to God, there to be preserved. In the resurrection every man will have his own character. God in His own time will call forth the dead, giving again the breath of life, and bidding the dry bones live. The same form will come forth, but it will be free from disease and every defect. It lives again bearing the same individuality of features, so that friend will recognize friend. There is no law of God in nature which shows that God gives back the same identical particles of matter which composed the body before death. God shall give the righteous dead a body that will please Him. {Mar 301.1}

What a song that will be when the ransomed of the Lord meet at the gate of the Holy City, which is thrown back on its glittering hinges and the nations that have kept His word--His commandments--enter into the city, the crown of the overcomer is placed upon their heads, and the golden harps are placed in their hands! All heaven is filled with rich music, and with songs of praise to the Lamb. Saved, everlastingly saved, in the kingdom of glory! To have a life that measures with the life of God--that is the reward (MS 92, 1908)

But turning from all lesser representations, we behold God in Jesus. Looking unto Jesus we see that it is the glory of our God to give. "I do nothing of Myself," said Christ; "the living Father hath sent Me, and I live by the Father." "I seek not Mine own glory," but the glory of Him that sent Me. John 8:28; 6:57; 8:50; 7:18. In these words is set forth the great principle which is the law of life for the universe. All things Christ received from God, but He took to give. So in the heavenly courts, in His ministry for all created beings: through the beloved Son, the Father's life flows out to all; through the Son it returns, in praise and joyous service, a tide of love, to the great Source of all. And thus through Christ the circuit of beneficence is complete, representing the character of the great Giver, the law of life. {DA 21}

THE ALPHA AND THE OMEGA OF DEADLY HERESIES IN SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISM

In the 19th century, the Supreme Ruler of the universe raised up a people known as Seventh Day Adventists in order to give the three angel’s messages of Revelation 14. Thus, the Protestant Reformation was to be concluded and immediately followed by the second coming of the Son of God for the redemption of His people. We read from the Spirit of Prophecy that:

Seventh-day Adventists have been chosen by God as a peculiar people, separate from the world. By the great cleaver of truth He has cut them out from the quarry of the world and brought them into connection with Himself. He has made them His representatives and has called them to be ambassadors for Him in the last work of salvation. The greatest wealth of truth ever entrusted to mortals, the most solemn and fearful warnings ever sent by God to man, have been committed to them to be given to the world ... {7T138}

To you, as God's servants, has been entrusted the third angel's message, the binding-off message, that is to prepare a people for the coming of our King… {RH Nov 25, 1909}

However, something of a most grievous nature has occurred within God’s remnant church. The purpose for which Seventh Day Adventists have been raised up has been thwarted. Christ has not returned. They are no longer giving the third angel’s message to the world. What has happened?

Are you aware that the Seventh Day Adventist “who denies the personality of God and of his Son Jesus Christ, is denying God and Christ...” {RH, March 8, 1906} and in fact is no longer giving the three angel's messages to the world?

The goal of the following presentation is to identify the major cause for the denial of the personality of God and of Christ in Adventism today and how such a denial leads to a failure in accomplishing the church’s God given mission. We will now examine the writings of Mrs. Ellen G. White, the Seventh Day Adventist pioneers, and of current members in Adventism for this purpose.

THIS IS A MESSAGE OF A MOST STARTLING NATURE TO ALL SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS

Question: As a Seventh Day Adventist, is it important to know who God and Christ really are; the ones whom you profess to know, love, and serve?

In February of 1845, a vision was given by God to Ellen Harmon (which you can read in the book Early Writings starting on page 54). This vision confirmed the Biblical teaching of the true identity of God the Father and of His only begotten Son. The vision firmly established the personality of God and of Christ. Thus, the true doctrine of the Godhead was clearly established not only for Seventh Day Adventists, but for all Christians. We read of God’s purpose for the giving of this and other such visions to Ellen Harmon from 1 Biography page 81:

The spiritualization of heaven, God, Christ, and the coming of Christ lay at the foundation of much of the fanatical teachings that 17-year-old Ellen Harmon was called upon by God to meet in those formative days. The visions firmly established the personality of God and Christ, the reality of heaven and the reward to the faithful, and the resurrection. This sound guidance saved the emerging church. {1BIO 81}

It was necessary for God to re-establish this foundational truth due to the fanatical teachings so prevalent at that time that obscured the personality of God and of Christ. For example, a prevalent teaching at that time was that God was a formless, impersonal being, having neither body nor parts. The personality of God and Christ thus being re-established, this truth was to remain a foundation pillar of the faith delivered to God's people for the finishing of His work. And before we continue, if any readers of this paper are unsure as to whether this momentous truth is a foundation pillar of our faith, let them consider the following statement:

Those who seek to remove the old landmarks are not holding fast; they are not remembering how they have received and heard. Those who try to bring in theories that would remove the pillars of our faith concerning the sanctuary or concerning the personality of God or of Christ, are working as blind men. They are seeking to bring in uncertainties and to set the people of God adrift without an anchor. E.G. White, MR760 9.5

Late in the nineteenth and early into the twentieth century, an attempt was made to overthrow this plank in the platform of eternal truth through a leading physician of the church. In response to this attack, Mrs. White, wrote out one of the following God given warnings to the leading physicians in the church on July 24th, 1904.

She writes: I have been instructed to warn our people; for many are in danger of receiving theories and sophistries that undermine the foundation pillars of the faith ... Be not deceived; many will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils. We have now before us the alpha of this danger. The omega will be of a most startling nature. {1SM 197}

The attack on the foundation pillars of the faith was called in this warning the alpha of this danger. This warning leads to some questions asked here concerning the alpha:

Question 1: What was the source of the alpha that would expose many of God’s people to the danger of theories and sophistries serving to undermine the foundation pillars of the faith?

Answer: In the book Living Temple there is presented the alpha of deadly heresies. The omega will follow, and will be received by those who are not willing to heed the warning God has given. {1SM 200}

Question 2: What specific teaching did the book Living Temple contain that Mrs. White called the alpha of deadly heresies?

Answer: The book Living Temple contains specious, deceptive sentiments regarding the personality of God and of Christ. {6BIO 58}

Question 3: What would be the effect to those persons who received the specious, deceptive sentiments regarding the personality of God and of Christ contained in this book?

She writes: I saw that if the erroneous sentiments contained in Living Temple were received, souls would be bound up in fallacies Letter 338, 1905. {5BIO 423}

She also says: The book Living Temple contains specious, deceptive sentiments regarding the personality of God and of Christ. The Lord opened before me the true meaning of these sentiments, showing me that unless they were steadfastly repudiated, they would 'deceive the very elect.' {6BIO 58}

And again: The spiritualistic theories regarding the personality of God, followed to their logical conclusion, sweep away the whole Christian economy. They estimate as nothing the light that Christ came from heaven to give John to give to His people. They teach that the scenes just before us are not of sufficient importance to be given special attention. They make of no effect the truth of heavenly origin, and rob the people of God of their past experience, giving them instead a false science. {1SM 203}

And finally: Had the theories contained in Living Temple been received by our people [at that time], had not a message been sent by the Lord to counteract these theories, the third angel's message would no longer have been given to the world, but pleasing fables would have been proclaimed everywhere. Men would have been led to believe a lie instead of the truth of the Word of God. Letter 338, 1905. {5BIO 423}

These are very serious, yea, deadly consequences to the Christian who should believe and advocate what was being warned against in the book Living Temple. Here is a summarization of these last four Spirit of Prophecy quotes in order to get a deeper sense of their importance. The book Living Temple presented the alpha of deadly heresies to God’s remnant church. Specifically, this book contained specious, deceptive theories and sentiments regarding the personality of God and of Christ. Such theories, followed to their logical conclusion, were sufficient to deceive the very elect and would sweep away the whole Christian economy. If the theories contained in Living Temple were received by Seventh Day Adventists,

THE THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE WOULD NO LONGER HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO THE WORLD

Messages were sent by the Lord through Mrs. White to counteract these “alpha” theories. And fortunately, the warning messages were received by the denomination at large. Thus was made of no effect the alpha of deadly heresies to the majority. However, the Lord’s messenger also wrote that the omega of deadly heresies would follow, and would be received by those who were not willing to heed the warning God had given in the alpha.

The omega would follow. What constitutes the omega of deadly heresies? Need we look for some different heresy to constitute the omega? The word “alpha” means “beginning.” The word “omega” means “ending.” Remember that the theories contained in Living Temple were the alpha or beginning of specious, deceptive sentiments regarding the personality of God and of Christ. The omega could not then be a different heresy to the alpha. That is, the omega would be the ending of specious, deceptive theories and sentiments concerning the personality of God and of Christ.

In order to identify the omega of deadly heresies, we only need look then for a teaching within the Seventh Day Adventist church today that would obliterate our understanding of the personality of God and of Christ in the same manner as did the alpha (had it been received). Does such a teaching now exist in the church? Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Let us examine the writings of current church members and of the pioneers to pinpoint the omega of deadly heresies. First, listen carefully to the testimony of two present day church members:

William G. Johnsson says: Adventist beliefs have changed over the years under the impact of ‘present truth.’ Most startling is the teaching regarding Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord ... the Trinitarian understanding of God, now part of our fundamental beliefs, was not generally held by the early Adventists. Even today a few do not subscribe to it. {Adventist Review, Jan. 6, 1994, p.10, William G. Johnsson}

And George Knight writes: Most of the founders of Seventh-day Adventism would not be able to join the church today if they had to subscribe to the denomination’s Fundamental Beliefs. More specifically, most would not be able to agree to belief number 2, which deals with the doctrine of the trinity. {Ministry, October 1993 p.10, George Knight}

Are you startled yet? Did you hear what these two men said? The reality is that not most, but all of the founders of Seventh Day Adventism would not be able to join the church today. Think of this statement for a moment longer.

Pioneers such as James and Ellen White, J.N. Andrews, Joseph Bates, J.N. Loughborough, and S.N. Haskell – NONE OF THEM could join your church today and have harmonious fellowship with you. Why? NONE OF THEM of them could agree to the doctrine of the trinity and as such, they would not be accepted as members by the church itself. As Mr. Johnsson and Mr. Knight both point to the denominations’ fundamental beliefs as being changed, we shall now compare the 1889 and 1981 statements here to show that all of the founders and early Adventists were united in their understanding of the personality of God and of Christ.

Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-Day Adventists [1889 Yearbook]

As elsewhere stated, Seventh-day Adventists have no creed but the Bible; but they hold to certain well-defined points of faith, for which they feel prepared to give a reason “to every man that asketh” them. The following propositions may be taken as a summary of the principal features of their religious faith, upon which there is, so far as we know, entire unanimity throughout the body. They believe,—

1. That there is one God, a personal, spiritual being, the creator of all things … and everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit. Psalm 139:7.

2. That there is one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Eternal Father, the one by whom he created all things, and by whom they do consist; that he took on him the nature of the seed of Abraham for the redemption of our fallen race… (Fundamental Principles of Seventh-Day Adventists no. 1, page 147)

A reading of the 1889 clear non-trinitarian statement of beliefs of the entire church (including Ellen White) shows that they were all in unity concerning the personality of God and of Christ. Let us now look at how the statement of fundamental beliefs changed according to Mr. Johnsson and Mr. Knight’s admission.

Fundamental Beliefs of Seventh-Day Adventists [1981 Yearbook]

2. The Trinity: There is one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, a unity of three co-eternal Persons

It is clear that this brief comparison of the 1889 and 1981 statements of fundamental beliefs is sufficient to reveal that the Seventh Day Adventist church no longer believes the doctrine of God (personality of God and Christ) that was laid out in the first fifty years of its existence. Pay particular attention to belief number 1 from the 1889 statement of fundamental beliefs. Note that the One God, who is the Father, is everywhere present by his representative, the Holy Spirit. Note that it is the Father who is everywhere present by His Spirit, not by a third divine Being called God the Holy Spirit. We read confirmation of this truth not only from Psalm 139:7 and Jeremiah 23:23,24 but from other Spirit of Prophecy statements thus:

The greatness of God is to us incomprehensible. "The Lord's throne is in heaven" (Psalm 11:4); yet by His Spirit He is everywhere present. He has an intimate knowledge of, and a personal interest in, all the works of His hand. {Ed 131}

The Bible shows us God in His high and holy place, not in a state of inactivity, not in silence and solitude, but surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of holy beings, all waiting to do His will. Through these messengers He is in active communication with every part of His dominion. By His Spirit He is everywhere present. Through the agency of His Spirit and His angels He ministers to the children of men. Above the distractions of the earth He sits enthroned; all things are open to His divine survey; and from His great and calm eternity He orders that which His providence sees best. {MH 417}

Instead of this true understanding of the personality of God, the Seventh Day Adventist church today has repudiated it in favour of the doctrine of the trinity. This fact leads to a revealing question. Where does the trinity doctrine come from?

Answer: The mystery of the trinity is the central doctrine of the Catholic faith. Upon it are based all the other teachings of the church. {The Handbook for Today's Catholic, page 12}

As a Seventh Day Adventist, is not this fact startling to you? Did we not see earlier in this paper that Mrs. White prophesied that the omega would be of a most startling nature? We also saw the words of Mr. William Johnsson:

Most startling is the teaching regarding Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord ... the Trinitarian understanding of God, now part of our fundamental beliefs, was not generally held by the early Adventists.

Here now is a most necessary and important question: Does the trinity doctrine set forth a deceptive theory that denies the personality of God and of Christ? If such is the effect of the doctrine of the trinity, then we may be sure that we have identified the omega of deadly heresies. Let us hear testimony from three of the founders of Seventh-day Adventism (and remember, they would not be able to join your church today):

James White says: Here we might mention the Trinity, which does away the personality of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ {James S. White, RH, December 11, 1855}

And J.N. Andrews writes: The doctrine of the Trinity which was established in the church by the council of Nice, A. D. 325. This doctrine destroys the personality of God, and his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. The infamous, measures by which it was forced upon the church which appear upon the pages of ecclesiastical history might well cause every believer in that doctrine to blush. {John N. Andrews, RH, March 6, 1855}

And God’s messenger to the remnant speaks: I entreat every one to be clear and firm regarding the certain truths that we have heard and received and advocated. The statements of God's Word are plain. Plant your feet firmly on the platform of eternal truth. Reject every phase of error, even though it be covered with a semblance of reality, which denies the personality of God and of Christ. {Ellen G. White, RH, August 31, 1905}

It is crystal clear that the pioneers of Adventism were firm and decided in their rejection of the doctrine of the trinity. Such a teaching denies, does away with, destroys, and removes a pillar of our faith concerning the personality of God and of his Son Jesus Christ. How can the claim be made then today that the pioneers eventually accepted the doctrine of the trinity when they were so decided in its rejection? They knew the results of its teaching. Certainly, Mr. William Johnsson spoke correctly when he said that the acceptance of the trinity by present day Adventism is “most startling.”

Regarding the trinity, a Roman Catholic writer makes this statement applicable at this time to the Seventh Day Adventist church:

Our opponents sometimes claim that no belief should be held dogmatically which is not explicitly stated in scripture … But the Protestant Churches have themselves accepted such dogmas as the Trinity, for which there is no such precise authority in the Gospels, {Assumption of Mary, Life magazine, October 30, 1950, p. 51}

And perhaps even more startling than this statement, is this admission from a recent writer in the Adventist Review:

While no single scriptural passage states formally the doctrine of the Trinity, it is assumed as a fact by Bible writers ... Only by faith can we accept the existence of the Trinity. {Adventist Review, Special Issue, vol. 158, no. 31, July 1981}

Do you not see some problems here? Why is a present day Seventh Day Adventist making this statement in favour of the trinity when it is only assumed as fact and cannot be proven from the Bible? We are never counseled by God's true messengers to accept any Bible doctrine without scriptural support. Listen again to Mrs. White:

Before accepting any doctrine or precept, we should demand a plain "Thus saith the Lord" in its support. {RH, June 7, 1906}

From reading the evidence set forth in this paper, it should be abundantly clear to any Seventh Day Adventist that:

A. If the alpha of deadly heresies destroyed the personality of God and of Christ and the trinity doctrine also does away the personality of God and his Son Jesus Christ, then the trinity doctrine within the Seventh Day Adventist Church is

THE OMEGA OF DEADLY HERESIES

B. If the Seventh Day Adventist church had accepted the alpha of deadly heresies so that they could no longer give the third angel’s message to the world, then by accepting the doctrine of the trinity (the omega of deadly heresies), the Seventh Day Adventist Church is

NO LONGER GIVING THE THIRD ANGEL’S MESSAGE TO THE WORLD

And if this is not enough, the worst is yet to be said. By denying the personality of God and of Christ through the acceptance of the trinity doctrine, Seventh Day Adventists reject the old landmark of truth that originally meant everything to them. Speaking to the author of the book Living Temple, Mrs.White wrote:

You are not definitely clear on the personality of God, which is everything to us as a people. You have virtually destroyed the Lord God Himself.—Letter 300, 1903. {5BIO 292}

The personality of God is EVERYTHING to us as a people. This is a vital subject. So much so that:

He who denies the personality of God and of his Son Jesus Christ, is denying God and Christ. {RH, March 8, 1906}

However, continuing with the same article we read that:

If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father." If you continue to believe and obey the truths you first embraced regarding the personality of the Father and the Son, you will be joined together with him in love. There will be seen that union for which Christ prayed just before his trial and crucifixion... {RH, March 8, 1906}

By rejecting the original truth of the personality of God and of Christ, Seventh Day Adventists cannot be joined together with them in love. Who are Seventh Day Adventists then joined to? They accept a union with the enemy of God and of Christ as revealed in the following statement:

Satan hopes to involve the remnant people of God in the general ruin that is coming upon the earth. As the coming of Christ draws nigh, he will be more determined and decisive in his efforts to overthrow them. Men and women will arise professing to have some new light or some new revelation whose tendency is to unsettle faith in the old landmarks. Their doctrines will not bear the test of God's word, yet souls will be deceived. False reports will be circulated, and some will be taken in this snare. They will believe these rumours and in their turn will repeat them, and thus a link will be formed connecting them with the archdeceiver. {5T 295}

By publishing, repeating, and teaching the doctrine of the trinity, the Seventh Day Adventist church has accepted a non-Biblical teaching that destroys the personality of God and of Christ. As a result, they connect themselves with the archdeceiver. And certainly, the following statement is applicable to those Seventh Day Adventists who today are proclaiming the doctrine of the trinity:

Multitudes have a wrong conception of God and of his attributes, and are as truly serving a false god as were the worshipers of Baal...{RH, November 6, 1913}

How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. 1 Kings 18:21

Whilst thinking about our Heavenly Father and His Son, these are some thoughts that I had. They warmed my heart as I thought of our fellowship during this Sabbath. So here, the whole joy of it is in the sharing. I pray these words bless you as you keep your mind on our Fathers love for us.

From one new moon to another I will come and worship. For when I remember the great controversy between you and the adversary; I remember that you loved me and came to die for me. And when you completed your creation for which I was chief, he sought to destroy it but you had a plan for me.

I will not forget what you did for me, for from the foundations of the earth and when I was made you stood in the gap and died in love that I might live, a plan to redeem, to die in my stead as one with no thought for Himself. How can I forget your labor of love -your so great love- for which you set aside a day when I was made, that I should not forget you and that our love may grow.

You sat back watching to see if I will go my own way, for you gave me a will and freedom to choose, seeing all that I would do you yet so loved me and when I did choose, it did hurt you for in that I will also trade my very soul. But your way now set, your plan so sure, unrelenting you looked not back a plan now established in place and your ways soon to be seen.

You gave me hope, made me a promise when I didst fail, you chose your man, in your counsel of peace you began your plan, set your day once more in your commandments as a memorial to say, one day we will meet again, hoping that I will come for you longed for me. A day not merely named “a rest” but filled with your presence for it is our day a day set aside for you and me.

Like an anchor it reminds me, like the gentle and sweet countenance of a beloved wife, one look at you and I could not resist, all turbulence of this earth goes to rest. This was our beacon, “If you love me keep my commandments” it was your call but it was my joy. How can I forget you lord, how can I forget our day, a day for which we tell against all odds that I am yours and you are mine.

I love you for you loved me first, you gave your life and love to me, when I didst wait you never withheld when I did call you did come, when sin held me bound broken and weary your promise fulfilled -you set your anchor on the cross, your love thus revealed, so evident nothing could resist. In that day you gave your life for me, and to remind me whenever I go astray that you love me.

A battle that began when I was born that was long conceived, in the heart of the adversary, but you gave all to risk love on me to say, if I love you I should keep your commandments. A great reminder and so joyfully heard. For you set a time when all men will be judged and for your church you made all things that your manifold wisdom will be made know to the principalities and powers even in heavenly places.

Oh That I might come and remember your day, choosing to die to mine own ways that I might have life again, choosing to keep your commands that I might remember am not my own. A safe guard you made for me to live! It was your love token for me that you will soon come for me. And how will I know truth if I keep your commands, how will I know you if I come to you, “you give your spirit to those who obey you”

I choose Lord to think on you today, to remember how good you are to me. To fellowship with your children and to grow in the love you have for us. As I come I see Lord that I obey, but what is this wondrous act called? Righteousness of your Son, for by his life saving act I now live, have grace to overcome, His righteousness given to me I live through Him and He in me. For you it is my will to choose and this day Lord, with my all I choose you.

One thing leads to another: there was evil to tempt but you so loved you made. You made a day for me to remember, knowing as time goes on being taken by sin I will forget. Our relationship at stake, but you had a plan. When I forget you say remember. When I sin you say I redeemed. When I am lost you say I found; you founded me on a rock to be a light shining in the dark.

Shine my beloved shine on for me; let your joy be full, always rejoicing. The glory I am given I give to you, here take of my love, my goodness and graciousness, as my Father has given me so I give to you, be now a light and a beacon for the world, set on Me for all to see.

When I cannot love, you say I loved you first, you give me your mind and I am renewed. When I was tempted you say I can count on you what is mine I have given to you. My victory is your victory; never fear my child I am with you. Even unto the end of the world you never let go.

I am bound to you Lord oh and how sweet it is. You showed me your Father, and my Father, you said come that I might truly see. And when I first saw men as trees you said come even close, see a Son. See now a Father and then know the mystery. “As I see my father do, I do” now you look to me and be changed. This is my gift that I give unto you; Sonship is the way back into the Fathers heart. For my spirit I have given to you, that once more you may cry Abba Father.

That which you have lost I have now given back; good memories that you thought you will never have again. See your joy now -how it lights up your face, see now my child -how I love to see you smile, how I love to see you laugh; it’s how I want you to be. Be not down this day my beloved Son and my beloved daughter, my beloved brother and my beloved sister, my beloved child; warm your heart with sweet thoughts with words that never fails and never goes out, that never to grow cold and never to die. In the cold -sweet warmth, in the heat – I am refreshingly sweet, always ready to comfort and stand by you, come now my child, come now and have a day of rest.

Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Just wanted to share this conclusive quote from the Spirit of Prophecy showing very plainly (once again) that sister White understood Christ to be the only begotten Son of His Father BEFORE coming to earth in humanity to effect the plan of salvation:

If God could have changed his Law to meet man in his fallen condition, would he not have done this, and retained his only-begotten Son in heaven?--He certainly would. But because his Law was as changeless as his character, he gave his beloved Son, who was above Law, and one with himself, to meet the penalty which his justice demanded.  {ST, February 25, 1897 par. 3}

A number of days ago I came across notes which I had written many years ago preparatory to delivering a spiritual message to an SDA congregation in a small country town in Victoria Australia (About 30 years ago). As I read through the notes, the thought occurred to me that back then The Lord, had been speaking to me as well as others. Not only that, I realised that He is still working with me in many of those areas today. Am I that slow and dim witted?

NO! I do not believe that I am either slow nor am I dim witted, but I believe that this particular character trait is so difficult to remove, that without continued submission to Christ it is impossible to budge.

“The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness”. {The Faith I Live By p 87}

Yes you guessed it the character trait is the “love of self” and as many of us know, it causes humans serious problems in many areas of our daily lives, and, if not defeated and overcome will cause loss of life.... ETERNAL LIFE!

The first time I presented this topic I entitled it “Practical Ways To Eradicate Self” however, in the last 18 months I have learned a lot more about this subject than previously so today I have entitled it;

1. BANISH NEGATIVE THOUGHTS: By communion with God!

Do not hold any negative or bad thoughts about a person or circumstance. It is IMPOSSIBLE to commune with God and hold any negative or evil thoughts against a person, because God will not listen. Any negative thoughts toward a person or circumstance will be banished automatically when a disagreement or problem has been settled and we are back in open and honest communion with God. Never forget the Word of God is full of promises to claim in time of need, so go to the Scriptures and find; “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path……The entrance of Thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple”. Ps 119:105 Ps 119:130

(ref: Matt 5:23-25; Phil 4:13; Phil 4:6-8)

Am I willing to put my thoughts to God’s word? IF NOT I am not ready for heaven!

2. PRAY FOR THE PERSON

Am I willing to pray for someone that I think has wronged me? They may have truly wronged me, but am I willing to pray for them?

JESUS DID! Luke 23:34;

Think about their position and circumstances. Give them the benefit of the doubt. Doing this will defuse evil surmising and stop rehearsing.

If we are not willing, then we are not ready for heaven.

(ref: Matt 5:44; Luke 6:28)

3. ASK GOD TO SHOW ME MY PROBLEM

Do I have a part to play in the problem or circumstance? Don’t blame! Remember if God does not show you that you have a problem - go to step 4. (ref: Ps 139:23-24)

4. PRAY FOR GOD TO WORK IN THEIR HEARTS

If there is no contributing factor from you, then only God’s Spirit can convict the adversary of their problem. Far be it for us to do the work of The Spirit of God. We must pray for them and be willing to forgive if they come to us on conviction OR if they do not recognise their problem we must forgive them without expecting anything in return. (ref: Matt 5:44-48)

5. ASK FOR A BLESSING THROUGH THE PERSON OR CIRCUMSTANCE

At the moment of the problem or more plainly in the “heat of the moment” it may be impossible to think of any good in the person or circumstance, so NOW is the precise moment to make a conscious choice. Choose to think good! Attitude focuses thoughts! IF we choose to think bad we will feel bad! IF we choose to think good we will feel good! (ref: Gen 50:20; Rom 8:28)

6.  ASK GOD FOR SELF ABASING LOVE FOR THAT PERSON

I believe that in these circumstances there are two types of love, self abasing love (a full and complete emptying of self), and self subduing love (keeping our lower powers in subjection to our higher powers). Neither come naturally to mankind, but both can be obtained by full submission to Christ.

Christ, in full submission to His Father had self abasing love as clearly shown in Phil 2:5-8 and Luke 23:24

However, unless fully submitted to Christ, it is possible that at any given moment or circumstance for us to rise up in anger, frustration or revenge when we are hurt or slighted because this is the carnal nature rising. Rom 7:14; Rom 8:7

But when this happens and we ask for Divine help, we have that help, 1 Cor 10:13 and receive the divine nature. (2 Pet 1:4) which allows us to keep our lower powers under the control of our higher powers.

The Apostle Paul Was Victorious In This Manner.

(ref: 1 Cor 9:24-27)

7. IMMEDIATELY THINK OF THE OTHER PERSON”S NEEDS

Begin immediately with thoughts of reconciliation to God and to yourself. Serve them in your mind through prayer.
If the person lives near to you it is easy to visit to see if you can help them, however, if 100km or 200miles away it is a little more difficult, but modern technology such as telephones, email, Skype etc are easy to use to get in contact and ask if you can help them in any way. (ref; Matt 20:28; Rom 12:21)

8. BE THANKFUL

Be thankful that God often uses those closest to us to and those who love us to show us the self that is unsubdued. He works first with blessings bestowed.

But, if we will not learn, God will allow the heathen to chastise us, e.g the Babylon captivity of ancient Israel(Jeremiah). We know a lot about how this process worked with ancient Israel, but we do not yet know enough about how it will be applied to modern or Spiritual Israel, but we will get to know this very soon. So let us be thankful that God continues to work upon us, and let us respond to His leadings with a definite YES LORD whatever He may ask us to do. (ref: Prov 27:6)

Let us listen to and heed the words of the prophet to the Remnant Church,      Mrs E G White.

It is the special device of Satan to lead professed followers of Christ to love themselves, to hold themselves in high estimation. They exalt themselves above their brethren, and find fault as though their own judgment was unquestionable. It is self that divides brethren; but self must die”.

“When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people then He will come to claim them as His own”. COL p69

Amen! Even so, Come Lord Jesus.

Mat 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

In line in the desert, see lifting up each other not letting go of one another; what is this sight I see whilst the tempest grow bold, stay in line He says stay in line, come close to me.

My sheep hear my voice and they follow me. Look they are weak but together with me they wax strong. As the days go by not overtaking the other, they stay in line and follow me.

Like sheep without a shepherd, weak and they go astray but I go after them; for one lost I go. Looking on with arms joined to one another, they never let go.

The vultures are all over, slurring in the desert; they sluggishly fly by looking for one broken. But with great horns for one another they battle for each other.

Never leave one another, stay close to me. Never forsake each one, go after whenever. When my strength enables, stay by the weak, till their feet gain strength.

Always never give up hope, help is on its way. My church I place in the desert for souls in distress and souls yet unredeemed, many will go but cheer up many will come; I will not lose mine own.

Stay in line as I am with you with the rod and staff. Lead and love one another as I love you. Upholding the other; deferring to another; give to each other.

The tempest will soon die out, many are unbridled in me. Much have gone away, for much I do give. Much gone hurt by another but the morning does come, for I go after them.

Seeking and saving all you can find whilst in the patched we rest, drink from His fountains and gain new strength. Carried on our shoulders, so the tired resting we walk tasking on in love.

Fight all the vultures that on the mind pick; accomplishing the task which once was bound, the cause of which we are told, once was weak and cold now strong and bold.

Learning from the other following like He does, nothing is more important than a soul lost to be saved. Nothing is more precious than a soul regained and walking in the way.

Realizing a hurt make much amends. Doing all you can, stay in the truth, doing all you can offend not the smallest, doing all you can stay close in line.

Not looking around, looking back, looking down, look to Christ; Let the Son of righteousness shed His love in you. Learning from His example, in honouring His Father, know of His way then drink from His reserves.

Now knowing your Heavenly Father, turn your hearts to Him, stay in His love, receive of His blessing and abide in His truth. Then following His Son, help and love all, seeking all, feeding all and sharing with all His blessing of life, so we love our Father and keep His commands.

Joh 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Dear Heavenly Father, in this desert land there are many who have lost their way. But the great shepherd your Son our Lord came to save us and by His spirit lead as through this fallen world. Help us that as we follow we will love like He loves and lift up all who seek to follow; all who are weak and weary but do love you. Let non be left sorrowing in the patch and dry land that they are not able, help us be to others what you have been to us; a well and a true fountain of life that they may see you too and find new strength and follow-on in and to everlasting life.

Gen 3:6  And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

It is an extremely sobering thought to realize that at the moment of this verse in human history, the history was over. Mankind was doomed with absolutely no hope.

"Sorrow filled heaven, as it was realized that man was lost, and that world which God had created was to be filled with mortals doomed to misery, sickness, and death, and there was no way of escape for the offender. The whole family of Adam must die." EW 149

It is at this moment we see some of the beauty and loveliness of Jesus. His heart full of the love of His Father which He inherited shines out in love and sympathy for the human race. He goes to His Father with the desire to save us.

I saw the lovely Jesus and beheld an expression of sympathy and sorrow upon His countenance. Soon I saw Him approach the exceeding bright light which enshrouded the Father. Said my accompanying angel, He is in close converse with His Father. The anxiety of the angels seemed to be intense while Jesus was communing with His Father. Three times He was shut in by the glorious light about the Father, and the third time He came from the Father, His person could be seen. His countenance was calm, free from all perplexity and doubt, and shone with benevolence and loveliness, such as words cannot express. He then made known to the angelic host that a way of escape had been made for lost man. He told them that He had been pleading with His Father, and had offered to give His life a ransom, to take the sentence of death upon Himself, that through Him man might find pardon; that through the merits of His blood, and obedience to the law of God, they could have the favor of God, and be brought into the beautiful garden, and eat of the fruit of the tree of life.

What a wonderful and caring prince we serve! I find myself moved by His compassion for us. He pleads with His Father to come and save us and open a way for us to have life.

Is He not worth at least a portion of our day for contemplation? Is He not worth giving our hearts to and resting ourselves upon Him? I find His love and compassion irresistible. I find it hard not to think about Him and His great love.

Of course the angels were not excited about the fact that their commander and prince would suffer at the hands of sinful humans and be put to death in the most cruel fashion. I completely understand their feelings on the subject. To think that the crowning Jewel of Heaven would be crushed to death by human sinfulness. It is a repulsive thought. I still find it too hard to really understand it, but since I am one of the objects upon which this love has been bestowed I am overwhelmed with tearful gratitude.

All of the human race should have recognised the gift we were receiving in God's Son. But sadly few would receive Him, the way would be narrow. Inspiration tells us the heart of why the way is so narrow.

Jesus told them that He would stand between the wrath of His Father and guilty man, that He would bear iniquity and scorn, and but few would receive Him as the Son of God. EW 150

It has proved to be just as Jesus said. Very few are willing to accept Jesus as the Son of God. Poisoned by the lie of the serpent, our natures love to embrace those who come in their own name but not in the name of another. We find that repulsive, for there is no apparent personal honour in recognising another!

John 5:43-44 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

Dear Father

please forgive us miserable wretches for despising your Son, Your Darling Son that you struggled to give up for us. When you did, most of us do not even accept Him as belonging to you and coming from you nor being begotten from you. Forgive us Father for our base ingratitude, our hardness of heart. Turn our hearts towards you and your Son and fill us with the glorious knowledge of your most lovely Son.

In the name of the Prince of Heaven

Amen.

Mat 16:15-17  He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

Those who try to bring in theories that would remove the pillars of our faith concerning the sanctuary or concerning the personality of God or of Christ, are working as blind men. They are seeking to bring in uncertainties and to set the people of God adrift without an anchor.” MR760 9.5
