Understanding Joh 14,16-17?

Hi there,

I recently was wondering if I or we in general misread John 14,16-17. I always assumed the following understanding:

"And I will pray the Father, and he (the Father) shall give you another Comforter, that he (the Comforter) may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom (the Comforter) the world cannot receive, because it seeth him (the Comforter) not, neither knoweth him (the Comforter): but ye know him (the Comforter); for he (the Comforter) dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."

I think most of us as well as all Trinitarians do read and understand this verse like I described it here, right? Have you noticed the jump from the Father to the Comforter? For what Reason? What if we read it like this?

"And I will pray the Father, and he (the Father) shall give you another Comforter, that he (the Father) may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom (the Father) the world cannot receive, because it seeth him (the Father) not, neither knoweth him (the Father): but ye know him (the Father); for he (the Father) dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."

Possible? If not, why? Any ideas if this is a good thought?
