Character of God
Presentations on the Character of God from the Brisbane Bible Training Series. July 31 to Oct 10, 2015
Session 1 on the subject of the Character of God as Agape as opposed to Eros
Maranatha Media Bible Training Program - Aug 3, 2015
How can we know for sure that God is Agape - Complete benevolent love? The Son of God has received all He has from His Father making Him the expression of complete benevolent love. Therefore the inheritance of the Son proves the Agape of the Father. God is Agape and in Him is no Eros at all.
What is the focus of our worship? The character or the power of God? Put another way, does God's character give birth to power and life or does power and life give birth to character?
The Scriptures tell us that
God is Love 1 John 4:8
God hath Immortality 1 Tim 6:16
The Love of God is the source of His being and this is expressed through His power and Immortality. This ensures that all of God';s power is an expression of His Love.
If God's Love and Power are co-equal elements then power and love are shared and this would mean that not all of God's actions could be sourced in love.
Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy;
God's name [character] is holy
God inhabits [dwells in] eternity [immortality]
This simple question of the relationship of God character of love and His power as either love manifested through power or power and love working together in tension is critical to understanding who God is and how He lives.
Jer 9:23-24 Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: (24) But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
This is part 2 of the Divine Pattern of the Character and Power of God.
How do we understand the violence of the Old testament and match this against a God of Love? Does God use force, fear and manipulation to help us get the point? Is the loving gift of His Son simply plan A and if you don't comply you get Plan B which is the threat of being burned alive in Hell?
These are critical questions that need answers.
In the light of the gift of Christ and the life we receive from Him, many of these questions are answered and leave the heart free of the fear of punishment and a desire to serve God from the motive of love. Only by love is love awakened. Force only gives birth to fear and slavery.
