God did not design that the people should do any fighting. He led them through the wilderness, in order that they might not see war. Yet He knew that if they went the way that they did, the Egyptians would surely pursue them. The children of Israel never had any greater need of fighting than they did when the Egyptians closed in on them by the Red Sea; yet the word then was, "The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace."

Israel can finally enter the land of Canaan! God gives them instructions to guide how they conquer the land. But sadly, we see that the people follow their own ideas more than God's way of doing things. They get rid of the Canaaanites in their own way, even though God gave them different instructions.

Once they are settled in the land, they again need to decide: will we accept God's way of government, or will we form our own government? For some time, they accept that God is their King, who speaks to them through judges who hear His voice. But finally, they ask for a king, just like the nations around them. What will happen next?

Read the stories of how the Israelites conquer Canaan, the stories of the judges, and the lives of the first two kings of Israel.
