The Present Cross and the Core Conflict in 1888

Part of series Gospel Anchor Series

The Present Cross

"Those who think of the result of hastening or hindering the gospel think of it in relation to themselves and to the world. Few think of its relation to God. Few give thought to the suffering that sin has caused our Creator. All heaven suffered in Christ’s agony; but that suffering did not begin or end with His manifestation in humanity. The cross is a revelation to our dull senses of the pain that, from its very inception, sin has brought to the heart of God." Ed 263

“And they also which pierced Him.” Not only does this apply to those who last saw Christ when He hung on the cross of Calvary, but to those who by wrong words and actions are piercing Him today. Daily He suffers the agonies of crucifixion. Daily men and women are piercing Him by dishonoring Him, by refusing to do His will. 2SAT 214.

This is the understanding of the cross that E.J Waggoner was presenting through his understanding of the Everlasting Covenant. It opened a view into the love of God that is breath taking and is supported by the pen of inspiration.

The teachings of men like Butler and Smith regarding the covenants rendered forgiveness in the the Old Testament as figurative only those creating two plans of salvation and limiting the perception of the suffering of the cross to a single day when Christ manifested the cross for the universe to witness.

"E.J Waggoners message of righteousness by faith was constructed in connection with his understanding of the law and the two covenants. To misunderstand, discount or reject any aspect of this trio would be to distort the 1888 message. The Law in Galatians 3 may never have been a landmark but it was crucial for understanding God's plan of salvation for the ages." Paul Penno, Calvary at Sinai p 71
